Abraham and God
    #11143247 -

Let's take this story forward to today.

Mrs. Abraham comes home from the beauty shop where she got her hair dyed blue. "Hey Abe, where is little Ishmael?"

"Um, honey, sit down I have something serious to tell you. God told me to kill little Ishmael and I could not disobey The Lord."

"You what? YOU FUCKING LOON! I will have you put away for 50 years. Oh, my son, my son!" :cryariver:

It's an allegorical story about faith. It speaks to the end of the aeon of Aries with the sacrifice of the ram. And by the way, it was Isaac who was to be sacrificed, not Abraham's bastard child Ishmael, who was exiled to the desert with his mother - Abraham's servant Hagar. They were the mythic basis of the nomadic peoples who were gathered by Mohammed centuries later under the God they called Allah. Abraham rejected Ishmael after his wife Sarah bore Isaac while in her 80s - a miraculous event. The people of Abraham became known as Jews. The Jews later rejected Mohammed, the ancestor of Ishmael. The rest is history - while the event you toy with is Jewish mythology.

This thread is about how such voice hearing and child sacrifice might be viewed today. Even the Biblical nutjobs would likely find it nutty.

George Bush said he talked to god regularly and that the conversations were not exactly one way. The religious nuts all thought it was fantastic. Context matters.

The Jews at this time were also polytheistic.

True, but there were OK with Bush killing tens of thousands of infidels in far-off lands. The Bible is also OK with that. But to kill one of your own babies might be a bit much and the mental illness just might be apparent in this case.

I'm not entirely clear on the dates but I think this is correct. If this is the time around where the modern Israel area was held by Egypt then yes the "jews" were still polytheistic while Abraham religions were being followed and created on the eastern side of the Arabian peninsula.

I already had a long (probibly off topic) argument about this in a PD forum and if you'd like to see it from the horses mouth you should watch the PBS program "the bible's burred secrets"

Bush also presided over the most executions in Texas history as the state governor.

I don't think my point was the amount of death but the public reaction to someone making life and death decisions, hell probibly the more important if not most important ones to the fate of the entire USA, informed by what he hears god say.

No, that is simply reductionistic in order to find fault with biblical lore. Everything cannot be reduced by a modernist mental health perspective. One needs to be able to enter into an ancient mind-set and the psychological culture of the era. It's a discipline called psycho-history. Employing modern models 'may' offer insight (like in Nebachadnezzer's case of becoming feral), but even in cases like the demoniac in the gospels, epilepsy, schizophrenia, paranoid type, etc. may NOT grok the condition being depicted. Even today there are bizarre culturally based disorders:

Koro – from Southeast Asia, it is the intense anxiety that the penis is receding into the body. Men suffering from Koro fear the possibility of death from it.

Dhat – from India; severe anxiety and hypochondrical concerns associated with discharge of semen, feelings of weakness and exhaustion.

Taijin Kyofusho – A Japanese anxiety; the intense fear that his or her body parts displease, embarrass, or offend other people in their appearance or smell or movements.

Brain Fag – West African in origin, a condition in students in response to challenges at university; somatic and cognitive problems attributed to brain fatigue.  This is not to be confused with the “Gumby” matter AKA Monty Python viz. “My brain hurts!”

Amok – outburst of violent behavior directed at others, often precipitated by an insult or slight; seen mostly in men.  It is where we get the expression ‘to run amok”.

Hwa-Byung – a Korean folk syndrome; a variety of somatic symptoms attributed to suppressed anger.

Pibloktoq – an abrupt dissociation disorder of extreme excitement for half an hour, followed by coma as long as 12 hours.  It is seen mostly in the artic and sub-artic regions.  During the attack, irrational or dangerous acts are done only to not recall them later on. “The bezerk Eskimo’

On the far-out side, autonomous complexes, like dissociative disorder (formerly, multiple personality disorder) is known to manifest discrete, hence 'autonomous' personality dynamics - perhaps even those with enhanced Psi Functions (whether YOU 'believe' them or not, I have experienced telepathy and precognition, as have many).

Modernists continually manifest a form of egocentricity which assumes that their limited temporal position at the head of linear time understands everything. For such people there is no Mystery about existence, hence the often atheistic and materialistic stance. The ancients Knew things that modern science is only beginning to re-discover, and moderns are still unable to grasp this notion that Plato and Socrates had 2500 years ago about anamnesia and re-remembering. Properties of water, and the moon, and their correspondence are being investigated by science, for example, and yet there are huge bodies of so-called occult sciences of which this little bit of understanding is but a part. Whether psychological or astrological, correspondences seem to be the structure of space-time if one can see the "Acausal Connecting Principle" of Synchronicity (which, btw, works at a quantum level as well) AS WELL AS cause-effect.

I don't understand your point, how does that relate to the story of Abraham?

Not to mention the rewriting of the ending, trying to make it fit a personal view.

The modern mentality often thinks itself so superior to the writings of the ancients, that they presumptuously ridicule that which they simply do not understand. The ancients wrote mythologically, and only the densest of ancient peoples took the meanings literally, like today's fundamentalists, children, or mentally handicapped. Moderns are often worshippers of rationality - a single mental function with a lot of practicality when it comes to science and technology, but practically useless when it comes to things of the soul, of depth psychology or of transcendental intuition. I was trying to make a point of this using examples of things that were rejected with the Industrial Revolution, the Enlightenment years of the 18th century, and only now are some of these rejected ideas being re-investigated by the scientific method. However, even in the realm of science, which is based on causality, scientists are discovering acausal phenomenon or transcendental physics.

Admittedly, I went off on a tangent. I think I was too buzzed on cabernet.

I would bet that a wide majority did take these stories as more than an allegory. Do you think that if the vikings or the Romans did not believe in their gods? I can see many of the bible's stories being taken as allegory, but I doubt the story of Abraham was one of them.
