Being different means being special.

Here is the definition of "special" which is relevant here:

"Surpassing what is common or usual; exceptional."

This is not a synonym for "different"

" 1. Unlike in form, quality, amount, or nature; dissimilar.
2. Distinct or separate.
3. Various or assorted.
4. Differing from all others; unusual."

Special is a hierarchical term, as it declares that something surpasses the common or usual, as opposed to merely being unusual or unlike other things. "Different" is more of a comparison, while "special" is a judgment.

Ah, is it so in english ? In german language there is no (hierarchical) 'evaluation' to that word. It's quite similar to different, exceptional, extraordinary, singular and such here.

I'll go and dig to the roots of that word.
lat. :specialis [to be part/match/apply of/to a certain kind]

"" 1. Unlike in form, quality, amount, or nature; dissimilar.
2. Distinct or separate.
3. Various or assorted.
4. Differing from all others; unusual."
Btw, I can't see any evaluation/judgement here too

""Surpassing what is common or usual; exceptional."
Surpassing or 'undercuttling' (word?)/soupassing

Well, since every living thing is different in some way, exceptional in some way, singular in some way, etc...does it make sense to claim that a particular thing is "special"?

Even if we take the "surpassing" judgment out of the definition, it seems silly to claim that humans are "special."  And to go farther, and claim that we are somehow universally special, seems to me the height of arrogance.  For one thing, this assumes that there is, in fact, some supernatural being/consciousness out there who evaluates our differences as compared to the rest of the living things on the planet.  These facts are simply not in evidence, and thus any assertions based upon these facts are invalid.

Special does not inflictively impose any superna(s)turality upon me, as far as I see. There is no judgment in special, else than 'difference'. We may see everything as 'special' but it is not so easy to see where, why and how this 'specialty' is based in.
Humans (each and every) are special in so many ways, that it's hard to make out, or find, the one thing (if it exists) to fix this specialty to.
Many tried, most failed. Separation and unification.

If we look on 'special' as 'different' without judgment, then the horizon may widen up.

Then, of course, all is one, in different shapes.

As I said initially:

Quote:
We are special and important to ourselves, and perhaps to a few loved ones. But not in a Universal sense, which is what Icelander's post is about.

I agree. It is highly unlikely that there is anyone exactly like you. So what? Since everyone can say the same, how does this make you "special" to anyone besides yourself and your loved ones?

Everyone is special, of course. Maybe that makes them ONE in regards of speciality ? But they still stay special compared to humans, nature and (maybe) soul

It's not important if somebody knows one other's speciality to make it special.

Simply the fact, that there is noone like you makes you special.

So, Icelander's initial hypothetical question has no relevance.

We will have to agree to disagree on this one, as my definitions clearly demonstrated that "special" is not about being different, but about being better.

Then your definitions are wrong, because the original translations states 'be kind of a kind'. Without evaluation.

I wont look up the english translation for 'specialis'.

The Latin root of a word is not necessarily the same as its' definition. "Specialis" is more exactly related to "particular" or "individual," and not to special as it is defined in English, nor as to the way it is being used in this thread.

Ah I see. You orientate on 'your' definitions, not on the origins of them.
So I am out here.
