Then don't look, don't respond and try to act like a moderator and quit making posts personal. If you can. Try reading the rules of this forum. Maybe ask for some training or for someone to explain the rules for you. I would like to see you succeed at your job here.

In the past several years I've worked on breaking down my sense of self importance, or rather, my sense of duty to the grand scheme of things. In the process I've become an egoist. This may sound like a contradiction in terms, but bear with me. I am not 'important' in the sense that I am not duty bound to solve the problems of the world. I have no destiny, I have no grand task to accomplish. There is nothing I am obligated to achieve or live up to. I'm not important, I simply am. This opens up a great deal of space to play in. Since nothing matters and I am not not bound by destiny or duty my only perogative is to live my life in touch with my desires, always seeking ways to expand upon thier expression. This, however, puts me in conflict with social forces and ideologies that attempt to bind and dissolve my power as an individual, and destroy everything that I desire to experience.(Wilderness, clean air, equality, autonomous communities, freedom, etc.) This brings to mind a quote I am rather fond of:

"Smash the symbols of the empire in the name of nothing but the heart's longing for grace." Hakim Bey.

Even so, you, being a human have more power to change circumstances in your life then other animals or things(that we have categorized).

The word special implys a distinction of some sort. Everything is equal and wonderful though you seem to imply that since everything is equal, it is therefore meaningless.

Wouldnt this be the exact opposite? That if everything is equal, then there is a one thing in existence, that everything is in fact real and nothing doesnt exist.

The fact that there are no relative values and only equals makes life worth living by the very virtue of its existence.

To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other.
-- Carlos Castaneda

We hardly ever realize that we can cut anything out of our lives, anytime, in the blink of an eye.
-- Carlos Castaneda

When a warrior learns to stop the internal dialogue, everything becomes possible; the most far-fetched schemes become attainable.
-- Carlos Castaneda

Do you know at this very moment you are surrounded by eternity? And do you know that you can use that eternity if you so desire?
-- Carlos Castaneda

Feeling important makes one heavy, clumsy and vain. To be a warrior one needs to be light and fluid.
-- Carlos Castaneda

If his spirit is distorted he should simply fix it—purge it, make it perfect—because there is no other task in our entire lives which is more worthwhile…To seek the perfection of the warrior's spirit is the only task worthy of our temporariness, our humanity.
-- Carlos Castaneda

Impeccability is nothing else but the proper use of energy.

Moderator Notification [Re: backfromthedead]
    #7366697 -

Yes, I have warned about employing personalisms in this thread. Once one gets to the point of feeling the need to discuss the nature of the other poster, instead of simply the ideas presented, one needs to click to send them a private message.

Of course, another user choosing to engage in personalisms is not justification or clearance for other users to engage in personalisms, either. This simply serves to compound the matter, making it more difficult for the thread to remain on-topic afterwards on it own, or for a moderator to take necessary action to preserve the pertinent discussion while ensuring the obstructive elements do not pose further threat to the on-topic discussion.

All three of you have been naughty, and as equally guilty. :nono: Any continuance of this off-topic nonsense will be removed. Feel free to direct any questions, comments, or concerns regarding this through private messages.

Hmmm..
MaYbE one has to distinguish 'special' from 'important' and then see how they 'interplay' with each other...
So we can see, we are absolute special and relative important.

We are special and important to ourselves, and perhaps to a few loved ones. But not in a Universal sense, which is what Icelander's post is about.

Indeedy! As I have stated in many posts. We make our own meaning for ourselves, but that meaning may have little or nothing to do with our place in the scheme of things.

While I use the word "unimportant" I don't mean it in a negative sense. While we may be no more important than anything else we also are as important as anything else. At least that is my best guess from my own experience and my exploration of science and philosophy/spirituality.

...'may' have little or nothing...or everything.

For me, I still see 'meaning' connected to the outer world, else it is clear delusion.

We can not know if we are not 'special' in a universal sense. There are no counter-proofs. At the opposite, everyone is a little bit different, that makes him special, even on this 'relatively' small absolute, called earth.
On the other side, 'importance' is strongly bond to context and very fast falls out of it, so it is definitely not an absolute.

There is no evidence that we are important in a Universal sense.  If we were, why disease? Why disaster? Why Genocide? Why child abuse?

It is not necessary to prove that we are not Universally important when no evidence can be shown that we are.

Agreed on 'importance'.
Refuted on 'special'.

Being different from other living things does not mean that we are special to the Universe or God or Allah or __________ (fill in the blank with your supernatural entity of choice ).  Differences are differences, and the same can be said of EVERY living thing.

Did you know that Carl Sagan actually said that as an example of a logical fallacy?   It has been quoted ever since by those who think it proves their point--how ironic!

Carl Sagan's Baloney Detection Kit

Also, from Diploid's stickied thread:

Quote:
Burden Of Proof

The claim that whatever has not yet been proved false must be true (or vice versa). Essentially the arguer claims that he should win by default if his opponent can't make a strong enough case.

There may be three problems here. First, the arguer claims priority, but can he back up that claim? Second, he is impatient with ambiguity, and wants a final answer right away. And third, "absence of evidence is not evidence of absence."

For example, you can't prove that God does not exist, therefore he does.

Heheh, I'm glad you told me that. I'll have to pull that out of my bag of tricks next time it appears in argument.
