What if music appreciation has little to do with "likes" and "dislikes"...and much more to do with human brain functioning?
I already covered this in great detail. Why do people love to have me repeat myself?

If it was merely brain functioning then why would the people in the 40s love Sinatra and today's kids love Eminem? Did our brains change in one or two generations to resonate with a new sound? No. Did our culture? Yes.

Should I fine-tune my brain simply because certain forms of music do not press the right buttons?
No, you should stay stuck in repetitious patterns and believe that they are ones that you consciously chose.

I feel that people should try and expierience every thing they possibly can in life and open themselfs up to the world. Foreingers listen to american music but yet noone has ever heard a band from outside the USA, well in my parts any way.

Its all about contiously observing your thoughts and diserning between one that is programed and one that comes from the "higher source".

"Foreingers listen to american music but yet noone has ever heard a band from outside the USA"

No one there has heard of the Beatles, The London Symphony Orchestra, or Ravi Shankar just to name a few of my favorite non-American artists or bands?

Oh yeah, my programming was shattered again... I ate guacamole for the first time...I always thought that green stuff looked rather unappetizing, but it rocks.

I have already become one with the spirit of the Habenero. I have spent the last 5 years developing a spiritual bond with the Habeneros in my garden. Too many people are unaware of the conciousness altering properties of this ally. It makes a fine salsa...even cactus salsa. I didn't have Prickly Pear so I had to improvise...

If it was merely brain functioning then why would the people in the 40s love Sinatra and today's kids love Eminem?

Point is moot...as Eminem didn't even exist in the 40s. As well, most of "today's kids" have never (or VERY rarely) been exposed to Sinatra so how can you assume none of them would enjoy it? There are still many people today who enjoy Sinatra...

Did our brains change in one or two generations to resonate with a new sound? No.

Correct. See above...

Did our culture? Yes.

Correct again! What else has changed? Not much other than the entire music industry. These days I would argue that many people are not choosing music...they are bing fed music by people making lots of $$$. Do you really think Britany Spears is as "popular" as she is because of her musical talent? Or was she created by men with money and then force-fed to a consumer audience?

No, you should stay stuck in repetitious patterns and believe that they are ones that you consciously chose.

I said nothing about consciously choosing the music I listen to. I generally don't. Music produces a response in me, emotional and psychologically. I tend to gravitate towards selections of music that I find produce a pleasing response. If I listen to something and it does not produce a response at all, or the response it produces is negative...I consider it to be music that I "don't like" (though perhaps a better term would be "don't enjoy").

I'll give anything a shot at least once, though. You would have to be pretty close-minded to not even give a song a chance to begin with...

I agree 100% with what I think is your original premise: that we should not fall into habbits and believe these habbits to be choice. Your selection of music as an example cannot be applied universally, though.

I think culture has everything to do with what music you like, and listen to. People begin to consciously "like" music when they turn 10 or 11, usually heavily influenced by what their friends listen to.

Whenever I catch myself thinking "this music sucks" I make myself think, well it obviously appeals to many people, so it doesn't suck, I just think it does. Ummm...

Well, I remember one time I took e, and hung out all night with a bunch of people I didn't know...there was one guy (he wasn't high) and I asked him, as you do, "what music do you like" and he replied, "everything" and it kinda stunned me. You expect people to say so and so, and then "but I hate britney/pop/rap" etc, but he just said everything. I couldn't stop thinking about this for a few days, (and I still think about it every now and then), how often do you meet someone who says that?

So many times I've thought I disliked a type of music, only to find later I actually liked it...it hapend with gangster rap for example...I was put off because of the whole homie thing, but after hearing some of my friends records, I realised how skilful and enjoyable it was...(with a little help from a few tokes)

The latest time is actually happening right now...I live in a city where everyone, and I seriuosly mean at least 80 percent of the population, listens to Nortena, ie. Mexican country music.

Everyone dresses like a coyboy, drives a pick-up etc, and you can't go 5 mins without hearing the latest hit, blasting from a store/pickup/open window. So, when I got here I was so sick of it after a couple of weeks. But now I find I'm starting to like a few of the bands, eg. Los Tigres del Norte (check out their website if you want to see an impressive mullet) I nevr thought I could like this music, but now I do...why? Maybe I've been brainwashed from repetitive listening...

And another thing, why, in this city, do so many people like the same sort of music? I've never been in a place where one style is so universally popular...are there any other places like this?

Anyway, here's some good mexican/south american music to check out...

Panteon Rococo- ska/punk
Plastlina Mosh- electronic rock
Kinky- electronic rock weird shit, fucking amazing live band
Los Tigres del Norte- nortena
Los Fabulosos Cadillacs -ska/punk/reggae
Manu Chao - reggae/punk/ mixture of many styles (from france, but sings in spanish, french, english, and portuguese, with many songs about latin america)
Nopal Recordings -house, funky/progressive

I discovered (for me) a whole new world of music...it really opened my ears!

sorry for rambling...:)

Gonna listen with a clear point of view, and I'm gonna do it the way you said..

Great tune.

Can you recommend some real linedancing country music for me? (That would be the ultimate task to overcome).

It's like placing yourself behind other peoples eyes.
I still can't say it would be something I would be wanting to listen to.
But the real intense hate for it is gone. I can't really find a good describtion for the way I think of it now.

Thanks, it was an interesting experiment (especially for a musician, as I am).

Exactly. Congrats on your success.

This can be done with most ANYTHING (moral) that you have a strong dislike for: food, activities, nationalities, locations; etc.

Damn you got me all wrong..

I first wanted to say: 'try out child abuse' but it seemed a bit to extreme for a joke.. Didn't think you would think I was thinking of you while choosing to say that instead..

Then again on the other hand...  :smirk:

At the risk of associating myself with the teeny-bop culture, I'll be the first to say that Britney Spears is quite talented and has a few songs that sound pretty damn good.

Just recently, I started to care less about what my car passengers might think of me with the radio stations I listen to.  It used to be strictly rock...but when alone, I'd blast some 80s, oldies, pop, hip-hop, whatever.

Now that I'm a bit older, I'm less concerned with how others define me.  And they must face the wrath of my music choices when I'm driving.

:crazy2:

That's not her talent... that's her high-paid, producers' talent. She probably doesn't even play one instrument well (and don't give me that "her body is an instrument" nonsense). Furthermore, it's been said that often it's her vocal coach singing on her album. After being witness to a few of her "live" performances on various awards shows, I can honestly say that, when she's not lip-synching, her vocal "talent" was lacking.

Done with this...
