Right, no choice. (for you)

So I'll change this for you to say that most of what you do is programmed.

And these are two contradictory statements.

That's because they are both jokes.

Yeah, so when you said your first post, in this thread, was just in fun, you meant that it was a joke?

Well I don't take much that seriously here but no, just my replies to you were joking.

It seems to me, that the question at the beginning of this thread, is unanswerable as asked, which is why I asked if it was a joke.

It is only unanswerable if you assume that you cannot alter your programming once you have recognized it.

What recognizes? So what your saying is at some point nurture and programming could come together and free you from nurture and programming. Befroe this happens you have no free will?

No, I'm saying that at some point, one could WAKE UP and notice that their personality is just programming, and then could choose to alter that programming. Our consciousness, whether it actually is what some call a "soul" or "spirit," may cruise through life on automatic pilot, or it may decide to shape and change our approach to our experiences.

While on automatic pilot, we do give the appearance of not having free will, but this is just an illusion, IMO.

Having consciousness does not make us more (or less) important than any other living thing, and I don't think that it was Icelander's assertion that we did not possess consciousness.

Never said anything about that.

What Icelander did say, sounded like that someone would be convinced that they "were just a just a bunch of programming from nature and nurture."

So if someone realizes that they are just a bunch of programming it is not a true realization, what he meant to say was that if someone notices how the programming of nature and nurture influences his life they will be better
able to make choices for themselves?

I think once you recognize why you do something you can make better choices.

Agreed.

What is post was about for me is the struggle I went through and go through to find meaning in my life once I came to believe my life most likely wasn't any more special than anything else and my life wasn't of special importance to the Universe. No one (up there) was thinking about me or looking out for me and when I died nothing out there cared about the how and why of that event. There most likely was not a special destiny awaiting my life or future.

at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

I find it strange how when someone points out a flaw in your logic, that you are "just joking" and that everyone should just "chill out".

But when someone agrees you delve deeper.

We do not discuss other posters in such a way in this forum.
