Re: Faith... In a world that makes no sense... [Re: whattheheck]
    #7330750 -

I am also more than aware of all the pain that is given out in the name of God, and how those who do not share in the belief of The Divine have a point with the argument that humanity would be better off without religion. Can't argue with that.

I just don't want to be labeled a killer.

I may not know a lot, and I suppose a person could never fully comprehend or understand love, but I know what ISN'T love. And hating and killing, ect. That's not love. I Believe with every ounce of who I am that God is Love and would never demand that we hurt each other in such ways.

So unless there's anyone else who would like to point out to me where they see flaws, I will put this thread to bed as far as me responding.  Maybe I'll come back and look when I feel better (darn kidney cleansing) and try and see what truth may or may not be in your posts. The language is difficult for me.

Besides, you all reading what I have to say is doing nothing but a dis-service to you all, and that too is not love on my part.

Man, I re-read that and I am so confused. Seriously. I can say for instance that your "ideas sound like those of a second grader" but to say "mocking me is something a second grader does" is different? If it is different in the ways that I see, I see that as hair splitting, but again, maybe that's not correct either.

To be honest, the mentality of those and the environment I was raised in, and raised to believe in suggests that almost all "fights", "dis-agreements", or "debates" went basically like this.. Somebody pops off? You hurt them. Sounds like our foreign policy for the past 6+ years. Fast quick and deep. If you didn't, you'd spend the rest of whatever time you were around that person or persons getting punked. There wasn't a whole lot of discussion about it. Okay, after you learned the "rules", there were none. Well, I adopted that lifestyle to a small degree for a short time for purely survival reasons, and even though it's been years since I've been around it, maybe I still have some of that in my heart. :frown:

As soon as I figure out how to PM, I will.

Thanks for the guidance.

And I SWEAR I will NEVER step out about my faith or others in any other shroomery thread again, and if I do, I'd like a Perm ban. I prefer to talk about what people feel love for and can DO about it, and not what they believe. It would be an assumption to assume that I'm not passionate or strong in my beliefs, it's just that hanging with folks who DO obviously enjoy (and yes I can see both the need and the love for such arguments, they are paramount for society) It's not my bag.

I'm just a guy trying to overcome.

Final note. Not so long ago, it was disrespectful to ask about or to talk openly about your age, religious beliefs, or how you voted around the depression era country folks that my grandparents who help raise me and their friends were. And it was a good way for country folks to live. maybe I need to adopt that policy?

I would have to say, most of them. Most main religions all have a christ figure as well.

jesus, i love how morbid christianity can be. one of the most interesting (and by interesting, i mean violent and bloody) religions ever created. It's in my top 3.

I think the point I was trying to convey is that we are all sinners and nothing we can ever do will change that.

not with THAT attitude we can't... I have a big problem with that entire mentality. Not that anyone can expect to be perfect, but the entire concept of just "you will always be doing something wrong" seems to do nothing but breed guilt, and absolve responsibility for your own actions.

For example: "I'm christian, and I believe smoking is a sin, but I do it anyways."

Understood, you do it because a) you realize you are going to sin anyways and b) you realize you will be forgiven. That is NOT rational , it's rationalizing. You could also choose not to smoke, which would seem less hypocritical - if i wanted to use a hyperbole, I would relate this to the mafioso that has no problem gunning down hundreds of human beings, because he will be asking for forgiveness on his deathbed. The only difference is the magnitude of the sin, however they are both sins all the same, and forgiveness is forgiveness, all the same.

No I never studied philosophy. I have read all the Carlos Castaneda books though.

I don't remember calling you a killer or lumping you in with them:confused:

My intention is not to cause you pain. I can't even do that. You might choose it for yourself though. We, each of us, decide how to feel about this stuff. You don't have to take anything personally if you don't want to. That's really the truth.

Debating (arguing) is not the antithesis of love. Learning and growing can be a great thing. Just remember that is not about you it's about ideas.

"what great advances in humanity would not have been possible were it not for religion?"

Perhaps every one of them. Religion has held together society since the beginning of society. There may not have ever even been a collective 'humanity' were it not for religion.

This assertion is absurd. Religion does not hold society together, and every aspect of nature as we know it to exist confirms this. Case in point: Monkeys and wolves, fish and bacteria form collective societies, and there is no evidence of any religion being necessary for this to occur.

There exists a collective humanity as it is beneficial for the survival and quality of life of human beings to work together as one species. The simple fact that human beings desire sexual intercourse implies that a man will collectively interact with a woman, the act thus producing children, the children relying on the man and the woman for the fufillment of their needs for their continued existance. Bonds are formed; specialization of tasks ensues.

In fact, most religion is, by its very nature, divisive, and serves to seperate humanity. To determine the cause of humanity collectively forming, one simply needs to observe the nature of how they come together. The force that "holds" the society of a city together is near infinitely times greater than the force of religion, which might unite hundreds of individuals in a limited amount of manners. The nature of the beliefs and characteristics that are assumed through religion draw distinctions between humans - those who are saved and those who are not, those who show up at the church and those who do not, etc. etc. etc.

One only has to look to the ugly nature of forced conversion by Christian missionaries of native populations to observe precisely how religion holds society together.

Your statement regarding religion as the force that holds humanity together as a collective is completely unsubstantiated. I ask you, specifically how does religion hold the human race together, in which ways? :sherlock:

Religion has held together society

It's been doing a great job in the Middle East for centuries.

And let's not forget torture, burnings, and inquisitions by the Catholics.

*bzzzzt*  Sorry, that answer is completely unsubstantiated.  But we do have some lovely parting gifts...

Humanity has formed groups in order to facilitate survival.  There is no evidence otherwise.  Historically, religion has not entered the picture until humans secured their basic survival needs, and used their leisure time to begin contemplating the Big Questions.  In the distant past, many simple natural processes were included in those Big Questions, and religion and mythology created supernatural explanations.

Now that our knowledge has expanded, many of us still look to religion for comfort.  We want to believe that we matter, that life has meaning, that we are special, that we are more than animals, and that our fabulous little selves will continue after death in some form.

Leaders look to religion for power, frightened people look to religion for protection, and angry people look to it for an excuse for the behaviors they desire to enact.

Perhaps humanity could exist without religion, but you will never find a human society without some form of it. Religion is an inseperable part of human culture.

Do you think the industrial revolution would have happened were the lot of humanity atheists? I doubt it. Workers would have better things to think about! Maybe the masses of people would not have allowed themselves to be subjugated and controlled hundreds of thousands of times over if they did not think their treasure was in heaven.

In order to do something very BIG with humanity, you need a lot of people. In order to get a lot of people to do one thing, they all have to agree on at least a few things. Religion is perfect for achieving that.

So no, religion is not the single adhering force of society, as you have misunderstood me to have stated, but it is quite a strong force, and it has directly led to some amazing achievements.

I mean, the pyramids...

And how do you know this?
Because it's the only example you enter in contact with?
It's like saying that besides Earth, there's no form of life in this Universe. Just because you don't know.
And because you fail to take to account the multitude of galaxies with all the solar systems which are so able of creating a perfect medium to sustain fife forms.
That's exactly how it goes for your example with religion.
You think a human society wouldn't be able to exist without religion because you've been told so.
As far as I know, humans can't exist without being able to fulfill their basic biological needs: water, air and food. It's what keeps us alive.
Religion is optional and incidental. :smirk:

Wow this has has so many errors in it that I don't even know where to begin. :nut:
First of all... you say industrial change, when until not long ago religion was burning people for looking at alternate life styles (such as discovering science, studying astrology, etc).
Do you really think that an employed carpenter is doing his because he thinks about heaven and the "rewards" he gets there, or because he knows that if it wasn't possible to work, he wouldn't be able to provide for his family and they would all starve? :strokebeard:
What you're saying here, now only that doesn't make any sense, but it's alarmingly wrong. :what:

Nonsense.
Atheists get along much better one with another than religious people among them.
Just look at what happens with religion and how many wars start because of it.

And then you said:

I think that you are contradicting yourself.

What "amazing achievements" would not have been made if not for religion?  They pyramids were constructed by slaves, BTW, who were under threat of death if they did not work.  SURVIVAL, FTW!

The industrial revolution?  C'mon!  People worked in factories in order to feed their families, not because they were earning a place in heaven.  There were no religious leaders exhorting factory workers to please Jesus by working 16-hour days for a pittance: SURVIVAL, FTW!

Now I would agree that the "Witch Trials" (more accurately called the women's Holocaust), the Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition would not have occurred without the unifying force of religion, but I wouldn't exactly call these "amazing achievements."

All of humanity has one important motivating force in common: the drive to survive!  This unites us and divides us, as we alternate between cooperation and competition.  Religion is just an opiate to dull the pain of the knowledge of our mortality.

Quote:
Perhaps humanity could exist without religion, but you will never find a human society without some form of it. Religion is an inseperable part of human culture.

So are language, music, dance, art, agriculture, and so on.  What is your point?  Do these common elements of culture make humanity exist?  Can you point to a single one of these elements and say "that one is responsible for all the amazing achievements of mankind"?  I mean, I'd pick language if I HAD to choose just one, but it would still be guesswork.

I don't know if anybody else has stated this or not, but Religion has quite often been a group that rejected the scientific advances as they came along. One needs to look no farther than the last 1,000 years of history. The church rejected Galileo and his findings. Hell, the church didn't accept the earth was round and that the earth revolved around the sun until the 1850s. In fact, if I remember correctly, the church had a policy of silencing those who thought differently than the official word of god. Many people had to hide their works in the fear of excommunication, rejection by society, and even death.

Actually, it was only in 1992 that the pope issued an encyclical apologizing to Galileo and lifting the edict of Inquisition and the sentence of life in prison against him for showing people that the Sun and the stars do not revolve around the Earth. It only took 359 years for that religion to come around.

Of course, the Catholics still opposes stem cell research that could help REAL suffering children because they think a clump of biochemistry that's going to be flushed down the drain anyway is a child too.

True to form, their moronic thinking has issues with harvesting a few cells from the clump, but no problem at all flushing the whole thing unused down the drain.

Religion is the biggest and most persistent pestilence humanity has ever suffered from. Only superstition and mumbo jumbo beliefs approach the damage religion has done to us.
