its nicer when theres less people there too. i liked skiing in the snowy stuff but i didn't like the low visibility, it made me ski slower and i ended up having to clean off my goggles, and come to think of it, the goggles and my ineffective gloves made me miserable

had some luck...did ya feel the earthquake?

one spot here a trusty old tiny spot, fruited last year Dec3, so that's 3 weeks late.

another spot is a new discovery, you can see a bunch of black ones in the background..but there are also pins. And the one on the newspaper is one strain of cyans that area really thick...the stem is maybe twice as thick as normal...I found one strain years ago that was as thick as your thumb, but the city plowed that up

I've seen them before I knew what they were. They were growing in a new growth pine forest. The tallest trees were about 30ft.

ok sorry, I moved that post to another thread. I think the fly agaric question is hunting..well, this is ID and hunting...I guess if it's out in the wild, it's hunting

as for Wasson, well, that was the 50's too. I think I heard something on the radio once that Maria Sabine herself was targeted by western priests. I'm trying to find some reference to it

damnit
just checked all my fib patches and 2 of thema still seem to be lying dorment. i only found 3 little guys that would have rotted if they wheent picked its weid too. one of the patches looks like it only fruited about 10 scouts abut 3 weeks ago. i picked 3 of them that where not too far gone. itss been like 2 weeks and this patch has yet to show any other pins. just the rotten black remains of the dried up scouts. i checked the wood chips and there busting at the seems with mycelium. oh well. give it another week then ill check back

I like the term 'scouts' they come up, look around and see if it's safe....

yeah some spots are like that...there might not be any more, or they could fruit again soon...we got more rain coming, so check again, is all I can say

there's such a wide variety of behavior I've seen with these, microclimates, etc, that there's almost no way to predict it..It keeps ya busy even if you have your own spots

Hey Red, remember that patch I waved at when we were headed to the Fungus Fair? The one Auweia told me about? Have you checked it? I only looked once. It was a pretty pathetic bunch when I went by. Maybe there will be more from the rains.

Then again, you look like a hippie, so it might be a bit sketch.

Ive had a chance to examine the pics by Workman of the cystidial forms of the two mushrooms that have been collected as friscosa (sp?).
I guess its important to mention that when im trying to ID a shroom I sit down and record all the cystidial structures I find - even the odd or singular forms. THat way you get a good idea of the more common to least common forms. This isnt really possible with the pictures from Workman because he has just posted one image of each of the cystidia.

The first one:

Looking at the spore size, pleurocystidia and cheilocystidia Id be comfortable in saying that its either Ps.cyanescens or Ps.suaberuginosa. Id reckon its pretty close to Ps.cyanescens - although the specimens Ive examined have a large amount of capitate cystidia - which we do not see in this picture.
Other than that, and the spores being slightly different in shape, Id be happy with IDing this mushroom as Ps.cyanescens - sublageniform pluerocystidia, sublageniform to lageniform cheilocystidia with extended body forms and sometimes flexous necks.
Perhaps Peter should examine some specimens of Ps.subaeruginosa for comparison as this mushroom is very similar to Ps.subaeruginosa.

This one is much more interesting.
The spore shape is quite different to any member of the Ps.cyanescens family, I did also mention the 2-spore basidia but workman told me that these werent as abundant as the photo might suggest. That being the case, Ive never heard of Ps.cyanescens having 2-spored basidia - only Ps.australiana and Ps.cyanofibrillosa.
The pleurocystidia is also pretty classic sublageniform to pyriform with a neck, and cheilocystidia are pretty fucking weird - sublechyniform to well I cant really describe that second form - maybe lancelate with a swollen body???
Looking at the macroscopic appearance isnt really helpful because it appears very different.
I dont think its Ps.cyanescens - Id be thinking that its either a strange regional variant of Ps.cyanofibrillosa with pleurocystidia and no forked cheilocystidia, a new species or a branching species (somewhere between Ps.cyanofibrillosa and something different.)
Im probably thinking that its a new species based on what I can see, but Id have to examine the specimens myself to be a better judge of this.
