Just wanted to share this quote form Castaneda's "The art of dreaming"
    #4893890 -

"He said that his interest, as a teacher, was to get me thoroughly involved with the themes of life and being alive; that is to say, with the difference between life, as a consequence of biological forces, and the act of being alive, as a matter of cognition."

Man I love C.C.'s stuff....and I really don't care if it's true or not....I've read three of his books and this is my fourth.

Read them all in order and they will come together very well with much more clarity than if they are out of order. Discussing Castaneda here is difficult because people get hung up on the fiction/nonfiction aspect so much that they can't discuss it as a philosophy. Anyway only about 2 others on the forum seem to be truly aquainted with the works in their entirety.

No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

Frankie isn't mean. He's a lover. He really likes people and things. He has the kind of spirit I like in a dog. He's a little flaky like me. Hue wins hands down.

i read somewhere that much of Castaneda's work revolves around power and that the folks who are drawn to it are interested primarily in power.

its a power trip

Power over yourself, not others. DJ maintains that we are ALL no more important than anything else in this world.

I've read a lot of peoples thoughts that could use this advice!

he goes on and on about harnessing nonordinary reality for ones own interests. there's very little about service to others or healing or any of that. just an opinion, of course.

I hear 'ya.

The thing is, he never claims once to be a Shaman(healer), but uses the terms Sorcerer and "Man of Knowledge".  To take power over one's life, harness what the universe has to offer to be able to live life to it's fullest potential.  A form of enlightenment, if you will.

I guess how one uses that is up to them.

i just agree that the sorcerer thing is kind of a power trip. don't really know though cause i haven't read him very carefully. never held my interest. small doses of magical realism is about all i can handle.

to me, enlightenment serves a purpose. what is a sorcerer in the service of? Castaneda doesn't make this abundantly clear to me.

Well, your asking in-depth questions of a Castaneda neophyte here.

explain this to me and maybe I can understand where you're coming from and this will help me explain what I can.

i read the first 3 in order: teachings of don Juan, Separate Reality, and Journey to Ixtlan....but I got two for Christmas that aren't in order...but it's easy to understand "The art of dreaming" it is self explanatory.

i don't think i can explain it.

something to do with concerning oneself with the welfare of others and helping out where you can. less to do directly with personal gain.

its interesting isn't it, how people can read things differently - a totally non-threatening phenomenon in itself.

LOL! Same here. It's more a feeling than a tangible thought able to be verbalized.

All of the things that I've read trying to go down the path to enlightenment first involve inner clarity and in that, you gain personal power. This is what Castaneda talks about. The term Sorcerer is confusing. "Man of Knowledge" and "Warrior" in the sense of taking everything in life as a challenge to gain personal power to open the doors are the terms that he uses and is more what I read into it.

Both things are talking about tapping into the "cosmic consciousness" as it were, but use different means to accomplish this.

You are basically gaining the same thing either way personally.IMO And again, how one chooses to use that is up to them.

I get the feeling that when you say it's about helping or serving others, it's about passing this knowledge along and helping others to acquire it...like Buddha. This is what Don Juan is doing with Castaneda also.

the inner clarity, personal power, Man of Knowledge and all those kinds of words muddy up my mind. i don't really understand what they mean.

when you reach out to someone in need, on the other hand, it's clear as a bell. the service thing is right there. no need to understand. you just do it.

anyway, nice talkin to you. don't let me discourage you from following up on Castaneda's work. you may find stuff in there that i just don't get.
