Re: The official Psilocybe natalensis/ ochraceocentrata thread. [Re: R4cMan]

Did I get unlucky with by Ochra grows so far, if their potency was less than cubes?

To be fair, I did do a major mistake of cloning an untested plin and I kept doing that for too long. I reset to spores, but those are also not anything remarkable. The spores would have been from underwhelming grows, so maybe that could fuck me over a bit, but I figured that the genetic lottery would be great.

Somewhat mentioned in another thread a 2% potency test and it made me go damn son

Is that because people haven't selected it into varieties?

Are there any "strains" (varieties) of Ochra, or is it all just called Ochra?

I'm not saying there aren't, I just haven't paid attention and I'm curious.

Multispore or clones?

Would 3 generations of selecting the strongest fruits eventually make an impact?

I did five clones, but I still had too much variance and I couldnโ€™t get a really enjoyable trip from it so I quit

I picked fresh what I wanted to eat, and saved a piece for a clone
if it turned out to be more potent than a cube I put it on agar and grew it out and between potency and enjoyable trip I gave up
Going back to good old Jack Frost and ATL7

This was clone, number five

Clones don't really lock in much aside from more consistent size of fruits/colonization speed/ cluster consistency/enzyme production and few other traits I won't mention

If u wanted to stabilize potency then do fenolial generation growing aka go from spore to harvest and do buncha potency tests on the fruits. Choose the most potent one to clone from or the weakest one... Whichever ur after locking in. Make a spore print from it gg ur now f1 repeat the process 7 x more following the same selections and at the end of it who knows.

U might end up with something more consistent for potency at this point is when I'd focus on getting a clone to try to make more full canopys/ more even growth

Long process though everything worth doing takes time and effort/discipline

So you're saying potency would be more consistent if multispore is repeated from the most potent mushrooms over multiple generations? I'm not challenging you but what's the science behind this? Why would the multispore of the potent mushroom be more consistently potent than the clone of it?

Pheno hunting for potency is a total crapshoot. You get lucky or you don't. Has nothing to do with filial generation. Notice how TTBVI potency has been on the decline? If anything, you could just cause genetic senescence.

Ok I'll explain.

For the longest time people were growing what was called natalensis. These were finally sequenced and compared to the holotype collection. Turns out they were not natalensis. They were actually a species that were never even described. Someone wrote a paper on this species that we were all growing for a long time and named it P. ochraceocentrata.

Meanwhile, no one had actual natalensis. Julian Mattucci and myself were able to obtain real natalensis from foragers in South Africa and we were able to grow them out and disperse the spores to the cultivation community.

Real natalensis are significantly harder to grow than ochraceocentrata.

Here are real natalensis:

I should probably just make a thread for this and link it in bio.

I want to clarify that the reason I donโ€™t like them and have quit growing them is not because they are weak and potency.
It is sometimes they are so fucking potent that I almost lose my mind and other times itโ€™s a float down the lazy river.
I like to be able to have some kind of an idea about how strong the trip Iโ€™m going to have versus how many grams I eat

Mention. I'm curious what you mean. This isn't a place to hint at secrets then hold them close to your vest.

Clones you can work with symbiotic colony's that isn't possible from spore for example.

Clones also can encourage metabolite productions early on based on symbiotic colony's and also different materials used for the mycelium to colonize will also result in different enzymes being produced to begin breaking down that material xd

Let's say u put lc to grains for example then put a grain to agar then spawned that agar to bulk.

That lc would have the enzymes to jump from and to grains extremely easy n can also begin breaking them down to a pumice slowly ๐Ÿ˜Š

N let's say u also added straw water to ur agar it should theoretically have the enzymes to break that down too and jump to it with relevant ease

(I don't own a full blown lab and most of my information is from others and or from theory or opinions of mine ๐Ÿซก

Though here's a full blown off the rails crazy train thought. So certain bacteria can trigger metabolic reactions and initialize fruiting for some fungus on top of increase concentrations of psilocybin n other related materials just from being in close proximity of those bacteria.

Growing from spore it'd be pretty darn hard to compare generational grows with bacteria though doing it with controls and clones it seems more reasonable at least in my head lolol

And idk where this would be a benifit. Possibly outdoor tub grows that eventually become outdoor grows lol I'm to drunk n fighting some severe wisdom teeth impaction and infections ๐Ÿ’€

Probably not, the mature caps are very uniform in color. Ochras typically have gradiated ochre centers.

Don't some of them have black caps? There's a bit of black on these. Either these are ochras or a well regarded spore supplier is selling mislabeled syringes.
