Contaminated tub thrown in a flower pot outside.
Ochras are really resilient.

Anyone succesful cloning a fat ochra? Mine are almost always noodly, but did some spores to agar, and this guy showed up. 95% sure it's Ochra, hoping to see if it pans out.

I still get a kick out of old blocks in the garden beds popping oysters, shiitakes, even had a small LM pop, but it didn't like the high (dry) air outdoor environment.  I've seen chestnuts in there,  King blocks give up the goods late winter to early spring, then it's too hot here. One of my favorites was a tree oyster strain from Maine, that thing just kept giving up beautiful clusters of clean fruits.  Get em' quick, the bugs will attack, they were after my Wine Caps (so delicous) years ago.

+1 for all those trip descriptors. clean, buzzy, accessible, fast acting. love these things.

In taking the clone, sure. In replicating the presentation? Not really. I had a clone LC marked "canopy" and a bunch of plates from a stubby KSSS-looking blobby one. They all grew out indistinguishable from the parent culture.

Yep ๐Ÿ‘ amazing how fungi react to very minor microclimate changes like a little bit of compression or side light xd or just a change of medium/substrate can show visible major differences xd

For example my blue meanie cubensis when I use grain spawn to coir or peat moss I get rounded caps mostly flat at the end though with straw spawn they get taller and the caps are more pointed / slightly bigger though grow a little slower (fast AF lol)

Question? I got a plate labeled โ€œsuper natโ€ from someone that has a very extensive collection of exotics and sent it with a pack of other non cubes. This was labeled and given to me about 2-3 months ago. Canโ€™t get ahold of buddy because he is in South America licking toads or some shit. What do you think it will be Nats? Or Ochra? I S2B today and Iโ€™m very curious to see what I actually have. I have never had anything mislabeled from him before. I have read about the misclassification of some โ€œnatsโ€ and some people getting true nats some getting ochra.

pretty much everything "natal super strain" is ochra from before it got named. true natalensis is available but still quite niche, the "super" would have me suspecting ochra absent other info. what's the myc like?

Ran a side by side experiment. Tub on the left coir pseudocasing. Tub on right just churned up bulk substrate. Unless some other variable was occuring without my knowlesge it appears that pseudocasings contribute to overlay in some ochra cultures.

Doing these as my first grow ever, seems like they're crazy fluffy?! I fell for the uncle Ben's spore -> bag junk, so lost most of my grains (got a PC and agar going for next time though). Luckily there was enough spawn for one tub, and they've absolutely taken off. I added an inch of coir casing when going to bulk, and was concerned it was too much/would stall them, but they shot straight through it in less than 24h. Crazy!

Part of me wonders if they're oxygen starved from the unmodified, tall tub. I haven't been fanning or anything, just leaving them cracked. Guess we'll see how it goes  . This is day 6 from going to bulk.

My Ochra contribution, same culture for the tub and bag, definitely bigger fruits in bag, but less surface area as well, either way... a cool one to play with.

These were grown back in Jan of 25.  Dialing in zips or Unicorn bags is a fun process to learn from pin to finish what they need, I'm an air grower so check the slight scarring in the tub.  I get a kick out of the mycelium on top of the caps, the bag was jam packed in there, nice culture, I was able to revive the culture to get some swabs, but it didn't do as good as it did originally that's for sure.  No worries, another species under the belt!  Enjoy!

I didnt take any transfers from the plate i used in my grain spawn. But these are the plates that l used to start up a dried plate and clean it up.

First plate is one that I did a hot pour on a dried out plate to revive it.

These two were cabin plates I used to clean up the hot pour-

They are all LMEA plates with 7.5 g mea 10 g agar. Black pates have charcoal (was an experiment and didnโ€™t like it). I am planning on taking transfers from the cabin plates to start new plates.

This is what it looked like before the hot pour plate dried out. I did a trench and then put it into a cabin and used a transfer from that for my current grain spawn.

Don't believe uncle bens is a terrible Tek. Because it's not. It only is when you're using straight spores. Use a clean culture and it works great.

Tossed two contaminated jars that had been collecting dust for a while a homemade wooden pot with some dirt. I think I used a bit too much dirt on top and I haven't really looked after it that well. Today I went to see if anything had happened and look who decided to have a peek. Almost missed the little fella . Not sure if I should change anything or just give them water and let them do their thing.

All projects have gone at awfully slow pace for the past year, but am going to pick things up again this fall.

Unfortunately around the web UB is usually advertised as spore > grain being easy and viable. It was easy, but as you say it's not viable. I can't really see the point of the tek if you already have the setup to do agar.

On the topic of agar... I've found the myc to be super aerial/fluffy even on plates. I'm not sure if that's just genetics, too many nutes, or something else, but it's blobbing up quite a lot (one blob even reached the the lid before the edge of the dish!)

Lower the nutes to encourage the mycelium to spread in search of food
