similarly, I was thinking of fruiting these at stone harvest.  mine are old, made nov 13, 2025.

There's about 15 of these jars...

a martha will be set up soon for these to fruit in... as well as similarly aged subtropicalis spawn (?)

I can tell you Ovoids love the shit out of sand in their natural habitat.

They grow in flood overflow areas, I'm pretty sure they love sandy spots because it allows water to pass through avoiding pooling.

Probably helps aerate it as well.

There is something... emerging... from this shoebox  /spooky

So uh, guessing without a casing layer, these lazy little goobers decided to just keep going stoney. The box is 1:2 grain to coir, compressed, with a layer of straight coir then compressed on top. That was about a week ago, with this behavior appearing in the last couple days.

What sort of case recipes are folks fond of these days? I'm guessing peat and oyster shell isn't really in vogue any more... (or should I just stay the course and leave it as-is?)

I’ve never cased anything I have ever done and I mainly go just for fruits because I hate the stones

One thing I’ve noticed with your grow is there’s an extreme amount of overlay on top of it which tubs seem to contribute to…. to me overlay is a symptom of low fresh air exchange.
Truffles only make stones when conditions are not correct for the mushrooms to grow so they produce stones as a last resort to survive

Greenhouse always works best

Aye, it is indeed very fuzzy in there. No room for a greenhouse at the moment, but I can at least crack the lid and let it breathe a bit.

Still kinda surprised how quick the rocks grew. There were a few sesame seed sized stones in the grain when it went in the box, but nothing that'd push up paving stones like this. Amazing.

It looks too dry for fruits in there I bet if you bump up the moisture levels it’ll pin though cuz that myc looks good.

3 TCs 3 different answers. lol. Proof that lots of things work and we are not a monolith.

:2cents:
For tubs, I find that a casing layer at full colonization helps with conditions at the surface. I use a pretty standard recipe for casing and add some sand.

In my experience, if stones start pushing up before any pins show I seldom get a decent flush. It usually means I didn't get conditions right to start and it is best to start another tub. Most often it was too dry, but with your fluffy colonization, I suspect that it was not enough fae.

My Instant Pot casing recipe per quart jar
1 cup verm
3 tsp gypsum
1 tsp pickling lime
(1/2 cup sand for stone producers)
3 cups peat
1 cup water

  • Sift peat through screen or colander
  • In a quart jar add 1 cup verm, 3 tsp gypsum and 1 tsp lime to jar +(1/2 cup sand for stone producers), close lid and shake until thoroughly mixed
  • add 1 cup loose sifted peat into 1 quart jar leaving room to shake
  • shake thoroughly until well mixed
  • Repeat adding 1 cup loose peat to jar and shaking twice for a total of three cups of well  mixed peat
  • add 1 cup water, close lid and shake until thoroughly mixed
  • Open jar and compress any dry mix down to ensure all is wet
  • Replace standard lids with modified lids or leave standard lids loose
  • place 4 jars in Instant Pot with enough water to reach 1/2 up the jars
  • If doing less than 4 jars, use water filled jars to keep the single jar from falling over
  • set Instant Pot to Keep Warm Medium for 3 hours and let it run the cycle
  • remove jars when cool

Notes:
  • Any water bath can replace the IP if you monitor the temperature to keep it close to 150f(65c).
  • Optionally test the ph. Should be between 7 & 8 but not over 8.5
  • Mine has a ph of 8

  • Use within 2 weeks or do another keep warm cycle if over 2 weeks
  • If it smells bad, start over, do not pasteurize again.

Too dry will definitely bring stones to the surface, once I kept them wet in tubs or the GH, I've grown them in both, I didn't get stones through the casing anymore (or the sub).  There is a slight learning curve with these, but they aren't too hard to grow IME.  In tubs, you will need wetness and flipped or offset lid for air for development, otherwise, ramen noodles anyone!  If you have a fogger setup, definitely easier to get excellent looking specimens.  In the GH, I don't case, if I run a tub passively, I will need a casing for my environment, and how I run them.

Yeah, being too dry will definitely affect the fruiting of the mushrooms. I’ve been growing some Jack Frost in with the ATL7 just for a test
I had to reduce the amount of moisture for the Jack Frost, but basically all I’ve gotten is stones for the truffles with a couple fruits

I started with tubs while I was setting up the GH, and sparse fruits without the surface being completely saturated, and evaporation to counter.  2nd and 3rd flushes were much better, but then it was time for the tent.  Check this old fruit out from 21', I was so proud to finally see something worthwhile (in a tub).

Ut Oh, someone is figuring them out

Check out the difference once they hit the GH

I have two Mexicana jars I'm waiting on playing with Pans and Ingeli right now, but I can't wait to get reacquainted no doubt.

Some pics of my failed stone producer grow.
I had cloned some sclerotia from a dutch smartshop (Valhalla truffles) and tried to grow them out to get fruits/spores.
    sclerotia --> agar --> grain --> trays --> casing --> JCM tub
Got some pins but the fruits did not fully mature. They got greyish / blueish and aborted.
The caps did not open completely and some were malformed.
Is this a result of a lack of FAE? The pump of the JCM is very strong but the window of my grow room is closed all day because we have cats. So i assume there is not enough fresh air inside the room itself.

Wanna try again in a martha tent in another room.
Cloned one of my pins to agar dishes and did two transfers after that.
Do you think those dishes look clean so far?
The areas which i highlighted in the second picture looks suspicious to me.

    Thanks in advance.

Those plates could be knots forming, how do the plates look from the back with your phone flashlight?  Otherwise, solid looking from here.

Yeah it looks great and i would definitely put a light behind them as it helps see every little teeny malformation.. i’ve also noticed that mycelium gets a brownish tint to it.

Not sure if there are knots forming, it looks to me like the top of the myc is drying out in the highlighted areas. Like burned. I am worried it could be a mold attacking the myc?

Yeah I suspect this brand of shoeboxes seals a bit more completely than those I've used in the past. Might be able to dial in something with a fan in the room but I'm pretty sure it would just swing wildly in the other direction and desiccate everything overnight.

Also, it is remarkably difficult to buy small quantities of sand. I don't need 30 lbs of the stuff, but the only other option is giving Hobby Lobby 10$ for a small pouch of the stuff. Bizarre...

    Hi everyone,

I've been around the forum for quite a while. I used to have another account, but I only interacted a couple of times. I have a bit more experience now, so I’m hoping to be a little more active this time.

I wanted to share a little bit of my cultivation. I grow in an inverted box and mist manually. I've tried many different cultivation methods, but I hate maintenance, so I prefer to keep things as simple as possible.

These are Ps. mexicana “Monte Grande”
