In sclerotia producing species (mexicana, tampensis and atlantis are all i know off...) , is sclerotia as potent as the fruits ? or does it change due to specimen? I've never tried (any) sclerotia nor the fruit of a sclerotia prducing specimen. And how about the yield both when left in the jar (mycobag, etc.) to produce sclerotia and when cased to induce fruitig?

I'm also curious about what Fugu mentioned... Why do some species produce sclerotia? And why doesn't the others? What forces the mycelium to produce sclerotia?.....

As to the why of species forming sclerotica; I really don't know, sorry. Potency: potency should be similar to normal fruits. However, as sclerotica consist of very dense material, a small lump may be enough to blast you all the way to Jupiter The major drawback of growing sclerotica is the time it takes. After the mycelium has colonized the jar, you have to wait like two or three months before you have some decent-sized sclerotica. So why is it done? Well, some people find it hard to get their PF cakes fruiting, what with humidity and lighting conditions and contam risks and all. Growing sclerotica is in fact the same procedure as growing mycelium (i.e. just wait 'till it's ready...), so it requires little effort. But lots of patience. Anyway, I find the look of sclerotica much less attractive than the look of real shrooms, so it wouldn't work for me I guess...

Sclerotia is a self defense mechanism which is created by the mycelium, it goes hard trapping nutrition in it, this way it can survive floods, no water and all hazardous conditions for mycelium to live in.
I think the reason its got the alkaloid in its to stop creatures from digging it up.
I'm really interested in it too. Its real easy to grow it need no looking after.
