Psilocybe Tampanensis Pollock Strain Cultivation Difficulty: Moderate Potency: Moderate to Highly Active Substrate: Dung, Straw, Rye grass seed, Millet Colonization/Fruiting Temperatures: 75-81F/71-74F This mushroom has an interesting history. All cultures in circulation today originated from a single specimen found outside of Tampa, Florida in 1977. It has never been seen growing wild in Florida since. A second reported sighting has been made in Mississippi, but no culturable material was collected. Over the years the limited gene pool and successive clonings has degenerated most commercially available strains. Tampanensis is noted for it sclerotia forming abilities on rye grass seed. Sclerotia is a tuberous mass of hardened mycelium somewhat like a small potato. Sclerotia is composed of 30% dry matter while mushrooms are only 8-10% dry matter. To encourage sclerotia formation incubate inoculated rye grass seed in jars at 75F in complete darkness for 6 to 8 weeks. Copyright Sporeworks

I have written some stuff about the cultivation of sclerotia on grass seed in the methods section of www.mushmush.nl. You might want to check that out. Here's a fresh pic for you: These jars were inoculated on april 22nd with blended liquid mycelium of a selected tampanensis strain. Need spores? It's such an easy way of cultivation. Just put the jars in a box and put the box on a shelf! Need spores? We got spores! www.mushmush.nl for the highest quality exotic mushroom spores.Edited by Una on 06/06/01 08:33 PM.

quote from our website:
In reply to:
Variability within a multispore germination is great resulting in some strains that are good sclerotia-producers, some that are good fruitbody-producers, some that are both and some that are neither. We recommend making different isolates from a multispore germination and testing each of them for their properties. Alternatively you can start with multispore cultures and clone some mushrooms or sclerotia.
It is the same strain but since we cannot send cultures, you'll have to make your own isolates in search of a good sclerotia producer.

what did you look for on agar to determine which would produce what better? or did you take the "strongest swimmer" and trial and error?

Actually multispore cultures often also give rise to some pretty nice in-vitro sclerotia. Some jars however always fail to produce any sclerotia. By cloning sclerotia from a good jar isolates can be made. These can than be tested for fruiting capability. It's also possible to select on agar. You can just clone sclerotia formed on the mycelial mat. Here's a pic of some freshly harvested sclerotia from a tampanensis casing. Need spores?
