Hey Smellyhobbit, what exactly are you using as substrate and casing layer to fruit them? Cactus soil seems interesting, I was considering trying that with tamps because they were first found in well draining soil.

Just wanna say up front this is my first time growing them. I’m not an expert, and I don’t know what best practices are.

Having said that, the substrate is just coco coir, not amended with any nutrients in any way. 3:1 ratio with a thin, lightly tapped down top layer just coir. Once that was colonized, i cased.

My casing is a cup of cactus soil with a teaspoon of lime. I don’t sift out the sticks, but I make sure it’s well broken up in the bag. I do the dehydrator pasteurization tek, which is tossing it on the dehydrator at 155 for 4 hours.

Sprinkled the processed cactus soil on top, heavily misted, and waited. These took a while after casing to fruit. I have two tubs going and one only made stones, so I assumed this one was making stones as well. Happy surprise.

My fruiting chamber is a 6Q shoebox inside dubbed 12Q tubs with water in the bottom. Once it started fruiting, I offset the top tub a little because I heard they like a lot of air.

Also for what it’s worth, I’m working from spore with this culture.

They like air, and a very wet casing, in a tub, they didn't like being misted when caps are developing early on.  Once the cap develops a bit, they won't abort or shouldn't anyway.  I like syringe watering myself, easier to saturate the casing, rather than spraying a ton, and still not get it wet enough, and caps are soaked which will then need air to combat that wetness.  Fun one to figure out, enjoy playing with your project.

I'm planning on setting up a martha-style tent, but I have spawn ready now (8 months old) and plenty of old monotubs, of a couple sizes (mostly XL)

I'm thinking of harvesting stones from spawn jars and immediately spawning to a couple monotubs, to see how that goes, meanwhile making a tent and dialing it in.  Would a tent setup have the same conditions for Tamps as it would for Subtrops or pans?  what would be the difference?

Should I spawn to pure Coir, or would verm really help in a substrate? (i prefer no verm).  Am i right that plain coir would be good for tamps and subtrops, while pans would be the ones to prefer something more nutritious (like poo)?  What spawn rate should I go for?

Spawn to 100% coir
1 to 2 ratio
User humidifier on 15 minutes off 15 minutes and poke holes in the aluminum pans to get rid of excess water, but they love to be extremely wet and humid
They don’t like pooling water

Martha’s work fantastic for them

Great advice no doubt, wet, but no pooling, I run a 3 disc myself, excellent work fellow Martha Grower.

was literally just talking to my friend; he wants to do a 4x8 repurposed grow tent.  we'd have to figure out how to match a fogger to that size, there was one he was thinking of that came with 10disks or 16 disks..

the thinking is that we would want more than one little martha, but I am hesitant to humidify such a big area.  I have been thinking of starting with 1 martha, then maybe a grow tent as well later, or another martha, I doubt we'd be filling that space much, or I dont want much un-used gear/trash in the end.

thanks 99.99.  so what kind of humidifier is appropriate for that martha?  is it a fogger or humidifier?  I do have a small cool-mist humidifier but I figure that's too small for anything...

could we have one fogger supply 2 marthas, would one fogger be too much for one martha? or what size would be appropriate?  or even a 4x8 space?  or would that require more than one fogger?

trying to not stray too far from the trusted path (martha), but would like some room to grow more (grow tent or multiple marthas)

They make 5 tier tents (used to have one, they hold a ton of blocks or trays), or any size you want in the indoor greenhouse world.  I would start with a 4 or 5 tier and go from there and a single disc will work, but a 3 disc makes life easier.  I have grown with a cheap Vicks coolmist, or a HoH 3 disc, it all works, just one is overpowered and the other is Under (maxed out).  Learning your equipment is the thrill and the figuring out process.  One must learn balance of air and water... each system is different... it is the way

You could do 12 lasagna pans in a Martha

That is a humidifier off of Amazon. Anything will work as long as it’s not a automatic timer or something that you have to set electronically if you can just turn it on and leave it at a certain function they work the best.

Then all you do is set it with an electrical timer to come on for the duration that you want
Something like this on amazon

You want that sitting outside of your Martha so I made my tube out of those foam pool noodles or foam insulation pipe from Home Depot

I’ll pick this when I get home. Small fruits, but should be plenty for an experience :crazy2:

Some blue/black fruits due to the lid falling off while I was at work. Little air burned.

Yeah buddy, those are filling in nicely.  Moist casing and air, let them caps develop and give up the spores. They can get tall and decent caps even in a tub, takes some dialing in and or tweaking, but we make it happen one way... or another.

There have been quite a few finds recently. Search for Inaturalist on Google and search for Tampanensis there to get a full overview.
