Gnocchi Water Agar * 2

Howdy y'all!

Recently, my grainwater agars have been appearing weak (boil water of oats + agar powder only). I thought there was something wrong with my genetics, but I also realized that maybe the agar wasn't nutritious enough.

So I did a test last time I made prepackaged gnocchi, without any extra flavoring. Note that this has trace amounts of salts and such, but nothing cheese. The starch water was also frozen beforehand but only due to timing.



All gnocchi is not made equal. You don't want the mini gnocchi types, they are less starchy and probably have more preservatives, they look/feel plasticky in comparison. It still works, but I noticed the mycelium is happier with the full sized ones.

You want full size ones, they are starchier. See the powder on it? Good sign..

After they were done boiling, I kept the starchy water, and made agar in my Instant Pot using this tek.

I also did a test with half diluted starchy water to see what the results were like. I did agar transfers from the same plate.

Greyish Beige was my previous boilwater with a tiny bit of activated charcoal (which was looking weak)
Orange is full concentration Gnocchi Water
Green is half concentration Gnocchi Water







You can see that the beige plate was iffy looking growth. The green has an iffy spot, but it did spread out faster. Meanwhile, the orange looks fully rhizo and spreading evenly with vitality.

I tested other genetics and got good results

I seem to like the orange growth the best. Would do this recipe again.

Keep in mind that grain water contains the concentrated bioload, including lactic acid bacterial metabolites, plus whatever other antifungals used to reduce spoilage on cereal grains and is now being fed to your colony after only a short exposure in your pressure cooker. Most people are using 15-20 minute cycle times for agar without consideration for source materials.

Innovative approach. Packaged food products will require none of the above considerations :rockon:

I wonder if just pasta water would work as well. I don't think its nearly as starchy
