Hi all πŸ€™

New to mushrooms and hunting them, so looking for a little advice if that's cool.

I live in the arse end of Wales (Pembrokeshire) and am wondering if anyone here has been picking in the area before and what luck you may have had.

Also me and a buddy are going to the preseli hills tomorrow to have a scout, will it be worth it with the weather the last few days (last night was super heavy stormy rain, today was intermittently heavy, but lost of sun in-between).

Another friend of mine who lives near preseli had found a handful about a week ago.
Any thoughts?

Thanks, much love!

Had another bumper day in NW in Peaks. Gotta be 4,000 between me and my picking pal. Officially my best ever season by long way now!

Few sterile/albino libs too:

:2cents:

For those that haven't had much joy yet just keeping putting in the miles and staring at the grass and you'll find some. Take a mate where you can to cover more ground. Its not even Oct yet! plenty of time. where you find just a few today you might find few hundred at next time!

Best o'luck for the season

Awesome haul!! How long did it take ye? Best season in a long time that’s for sure. Am finding a fair few albinos too they seem to be out in force this season! Looking forward to seeing more of your finds season hasn’t even peaked yet!

Hello people, I really enjoy seeing all of the successful hunts from all of you it's some good motivation to get out there whenever I can, but this is my first year, my first real hunts in the autumn and it's going quiet dreadfully. I have a spot though I am not sure if nothing is coming up because the fruiting conditions are not met (I think they are but perhaps temps could be lower, most days they have been 17C 18C and 16C) Its been raining pretty profusely every day, and I am finding mushrooms but they are certainly not liberty caps, can somebody who knows tell me if I am wasting my time in this field? If I should find a new spot to look for them? Or if perhaps I should just be more patient.
Thank you for any response I get in advance, just know I really really appreciate it!

That field looks ok maybe they’re just not fruiting yet but keep looking for other spots, you can never have too many. Good luck!

Hey Hey,
First post from me, have abit of mushroom experience in Australia but now I'm back in the U.K. And it's lib season it would be rude not to sample, little drive today in the fells of the Lake District and found these within about 10minutes before running out of day light, there was sheep & horse on these lands and maybe cows, I also included a pic of the terrain, I was just hoping for some confirmation that these are in fact libs, and if they are I will be spending all day up there tomorrow!!:crazy2:
Thanks for any help!

That field looks a bit too bland for libs imo. You want ones with longer grass and rougher/wilder look. I use google satellite maps and search for fields next to roads with a rough, shabby look to them. Then check them out on street view and go from there.

Like someone else said the more spots you have the better, you can't rely on one field, good luck

Thank you my man, I will still continue to look there briefly, but I wont pay nearly as much attention to it, I went on an expedition today on my bike, I was looking for fields and saw a few prime candidates but it takes a long time to get there in comparison. But I think I now have an idea of what I should be looking for in a picking field so I thank you graciously, I will also employ your google maps technique see if there are any good candidates around. Thanks for your time and advice.

Nice little session on Exmoor this afternoon/evening. Was slow until it was nearly dark and I'd stopped somewhere else, then they just kept coming πŸ˜ƒ
Not sure about the middle on in second pic, ;it think it might just be a mutant?

From struggling to my first proper finds a few days ago of only a few, to this, something has changed for me finally πŸ˜ƒ

Oh yeah, and my paper bag got full, but trust me tissue was a really bad idea. Seemed ok at first, but for more than a few minutes they stick like hell when they start drying a bit πŸ™„

Thanks for confirming, there was also albino libs I will take next time!
Not to mention some very weird specemins with almost translucent stems fading to green at either end, very strange!

Absolutely loads of albino libs in my spot today. I didn't pick as wasn't sure if they're active / definitely albino libs. Finally get a chance of for a good look tomorrow!

I'm waiting 'till later in season because I want to do this:

It's 550m above sea level and northish facing of cow and sheep pasture. I can't see there not being any on here. But recently I did a similar field roughly 250m above sea level, after a good rain, at 14C, and NOTHING.

Finally home and laid out to dry (Exmoor fairies were kind to me today). I can't wait to get out again but not sure when I'll get chance. Time to try again to find somewhere more local now I am hopefully tuned in. So excited, and still September πŸ˜ƒ

Quick question, is anyone else finding shrooms with the same colours, lines etc as libs but are quite flat and wide? This particular shroom also has a pellicle and the stem is bendy like a lib but also cracks alot easier....

could just be normal variance / fully open but...

If not i think I know what u mean but hoping for help on this as not nearly knowledgeable enough to provide clear answer. Hopefully a TI will weigh in.

CAVEAT: below is pure speculation - do not give it any weight in ur hunts

Does it grow from dung and look almost exacly like a lib in colour (when brown/beige) and vertical stripes on cap?
I vaguely remember being told it was something like "demonica" in past but this isn't a thing when I googled it or checked my ref books. I'm hoping demomica is similar enough to real name to spark TIs brain to give you more than this speculation.

If it does grow from dung maybe a slim chance could be P. fimertaria (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psilocybe_fimetaria) a shroom i hope to stumble across one day but have yet to after many moons on Lib hunting so its unlikely!

apologies if this just muddies water. a pic would help get this query i reckon

It was only 2.5-3 hours of picking, there was two of us and we were on our knees more than not.

Dry weight ended up at 73g so huge congrats to ragu whose guess a€s 66g was the closest for the prizeless "how many shrooms [dry weight] in the photos competition".

On hourly basis defo best haul eer had but now weights are in we got more a couple weeks ago (c.90g) but this was more like 5-6 hours.

Defo my best season already. Conditions seem to be bang on at my spots (so best year for a while for newbies imo) but think i'm also reaping rewards from exploring in past few years. i'm thinking most future hunts will focus on exploration as i'm set for the year (and it not even Oct!!!!)

My mate picked the steriles. I've only picked a few before myself but he said he left loads in big flush once he noticed they weren't quite standard. He won't next time!

keep on pickin'. :mushroom2:
