I have a few questions about Libs in the uk! wondering if anyone could help? I have been on a quite a lot of searches and founds lots of species, most commonly 'panaelous' like in the earlier few posts, so am i looking in the right kinds of areas? (grazing field) Is it better to look in the dampest or driest parts of the fields? (i live in one of the driest parts of the uk, down south!) And i know its good to look after heavy rain, but do thay take a few days to come up, and how long do they last up, if unpicked? I also heard that a heavy frost is needed, and how does this link in with the rain? Has anyone had any succes around brighton area? is it generaly the more richly green the field the better? i understand theres know real clean cut answers, im just looking for a bit of advice. Thanks!

Aliaz-Don't worry about living in a dry part of the country. There's always somewhere to go looking for libs! You may be a bit late this year though, but it's still worth having a look  You need to look in the dampest parts of fields. Check out your nearest nature reserve and look for low, marshy areas. If you don't have a nature reserve nearby, no worries. There are plenty of other likely spots to find them; near rivers, on sports fields, in your back garden... keep looking and I'm sure you'll succeed eventually!

To be honest I have spent DAYS and WEEKS looking for libs to find nothing or maybe just one or two.

Its a waste of time if you wanna eat them!

The best way is local knowledge.  Once you start talking to people about shrooms it can be amazing what experiences your common man has had.  It won't take long until these people tell or drop hints of local BIG shroom locations!

The first local to tell me of a field, I came across 20-30 libs in 2 hours.  A few months later I was informed of another field.  When we eventually picked there we got a good 100-200 in a couple of hours!  Obviously I wouldn't ask anyone that is likely to be against drugs!

As you live down south like me, I will tell you one spot as everybody knows it, the new forest.  If you live closer to devon then there are plenty of well know big shroom fields I can tell you about!

Hey Joost! (Very cool name hehe)

Here the season wasnt that good as in some other years. Maybe also because in this little crowded country more and more people discover the places.
SOme trips we did not find anything and on some hunts we found like 60 pieces. Still not many. Thats was a month ago.

I think the season will be over soon since it has been freezing some nights.

I had none from the New Forest area this year (so far), but I've heard reports that people have had success deeper into the forest (colder). However nil desperandum guys, years ago when studying at Essex uni, I hit a motherload (over a period of approx. a week) following a chance find on a local sports field, after the first frost around the 18th December. I recon they may go dormant following an Autumn of adverse conditions only to re-appear en mass as soon as they can. Factory shuts down, everyone goes home they "re-negotiate" go back to work factory opens up again and hey presto!

I'm a bit handicap today..it seems my over zealous traversing yesterday left me with either an in-grown toe nail or..some weird deep blister/drying out taht i  cant see..either way..i cant walk with shoes on and must keep my toe up =\ not sure how long this will last...

anywho, I decided to post my lib hunt yesterday as a general post since it was more or less an ID post, but I had some other questions pertaining to libs..I was in an area thats known to produce libs, the nite before there was a nice mellow rain...no freezing, i found these pans which ive been told are found often when hunting libs, so, what gives =\ if im paying attention enough to see these im certainly not missing libs..anyone else from oregon finding these still? 'any' one have 'any' idea as to why i might be incapable of finding these =| bad luck?  ~D

Liberty caps do not grow in forests. They grow in meadowlands, pasturelands and tall rank grass. the forest has no tall rank grass such as sedge, etc.
