Liberty caps in england...

I am hoping to try my luck at finding some liberty caps in the wild this year...

I have read up and looked at pictures and things on identifying them and I'll like post pictures here for help should we come back with anything...

But my question is, when would be a good time to go, because we've had a heat wave summer and little rain, and I know it's around september (later) but are there any times or signs in the weather etc. I should def look for before I stomp out to the nearest fields?

I am under the impression it is a bit too early and need to wait for more rain...

Also, I read but couldn't find any information on poisonous look-a-likes to liberty caps...did I miss something or are all look-a-likes harmless. I obviously won't be taking any risks but for peace of mind be nice to know...

Thank you to all those who reply! If I missed something vital tell em and i'll reply or edit it in...

Btw, I am in the south of england.

it will probably be a few weeks at least before you start seeing any dignifigant fruitings. my best advice for you is to keep an eye on the forums and wait till you start seeing/hearing about finds in your area and then get out and hunt.

be safe about hunting and especialuy about identifying. if you have any questions about the identity of a find you can always come here and get help as long as you read the rules and the requirements for posting an id request.

Try reading some of the current posts in this forum about lib hunting. There's only been about 5 or 6 of them in the last couple weeks... It's kind of rediculous really. We need to consolidate, people :wink:

Hey, thank you...

I did do a search (several combinations) and found a lot of liberty caps but most of it I already knew from reading the guide thing, but I couldnt find anything on hunting them in the U.K. itself...especially regarding the summer's weather and the effect it might have on fruiting.

I will stop by here daily and check if any Englishers find liberty caps...

actually i have seen that before i feel cheated,
and the identification guide don't work and also
seeing as there is only about 9 types of magic mushroom in
the uk you think you would be able to find a
list of them

adiohead: this is an english shroomery, as well as one for every other contry. part of the beauty of this site is that there are users from so many contries. it gives us all a new perspective whenever we need one and a chance to find others like ourselves near us.

Hey, cool, thanks for the link I found it a long time ago and didnt pay much attention cos I was planning on going picking then but it's useful now!

That main map isn't much use - nothing near me, but this one I found

THis one has a large amount of dots at the very centre-south of England (not the south west...) which are basically a little to the left of where I live (southampton)...

I'll see what they correspond to on a real map of Hampshire and try my luck there when the time is right.

As far as I have understood Liberty Caps are the most common and easily identifiable ones which is why I'm going for them...

And yeh it would be cool talking to other UK "experts", even meeting up with them if they're not fat away to go hunting together and pass on some info in person...

The south downs, surrey, sussex are good areas to head to, there
hilly and sheep farmed (Basicaly what i look for in a site)
But its still too dry, the ground needs time to recover from
our very dry summer (sweet england had a good summer :tongue:)

Woud The Shroomery Host maybe an Englush Specific Subsection/Forum to help English people get more relevant information about mushrooms?

I would help if help was needed but to be honest for the time being I am hardly very knowledgable...

This might be a bad idea though, feel free to post why if you think it is...

yea i think that would help a lot of european hunters, such as my friend from sweden who is frustrated with looking for P. semilanceata because "they all look like totally different mushrooms."  :rolleyes:
hell, if any help is needed with computer stuff ill help, although ive never been to britain.... :blush:
