I wouldn’t worry about being close to the river. The terrain within a mile or so of the river is fairly steep and the creeks don’t meander as much. Upstream a bit has those nice slow curves with big sandy banks.

I’m gonna get out for a bit now. Looks like we could be in store for some dangerous storms later this afternoon.

They passed through here yesterday and the news over hyped them. Just be safe.

Maybe that's my problem. I LIVE within a mile of the Potomac, so all the places I've been checking have been pretty far downstream naturally. My main hunting grounds (where I have found active Gyms a number of times) are certainly all within a mile of the river.

That's it. Going to go further upstream. I will probably wait for these storms to pass though--the hourly forecast says they'll be here in less than 2 hours.

Hey gang! Does anyone have a list of a few common hydrophilic plants you're seeing in ovoid habitats from y'alls experiences? Curious about what kind of habitats I should be searching as the season heats up

Is the focus on box elder more applicable to the PA ovoids than the ones here in the DC area? The pics you post show ovoids growing a lot differently than the pics I see from this area.

Ovoids grow from box elder twigs, branches and logs in all mid atlantic areas as well as the ohio river valley.  I've personally found em, using the strategy of tree hunting, in MD, VA, OH, and PA (both west n east)

Edit:  I should mention that this strategy is for wild situations and does not always apply to urban areas.  Hunting mulched areas can lead you into habitats that would normally not be ideal for wild floodplain hunting.

All the basic floodplain plants:  nettle, garlic mustard, celandine, blue bells, box elder, black walnut, river maple, sycamores, tulip trees

Do you have a certain distance from the creek that you won't bother examining box elder debris?

No, but they're almost always near some sort of water.  If anything, I tend to stay in the groves and ignore any randoms too far from debris layout.

Creeks have flood plains that are generally at the same level as the creek bank. These are areas within which the creek path will meander over years and decades. The ground in these areas tend to be softer, and sandier with lots of buried debris. There are usually ruts and and depressions that get swampy when it rains. These flood plains are where you should be looking.

This is my first year hunting but after looking through a decent amount of the ovoid threads it’s fair to say Koods and TexturedSounds have provided enough info on this site to write a guidebook to finding ovoids in the mid Atlantic. Appreciate you guys!

They also field a lot of repeat questions so I would advise using the search function before typing a post to fellow noobs like myself.

Is that an albino deer?

That’s crazy.

Kind of, I think it's probably a piebald deer which is almost albino but has some light brown spots.  I've never seen one before.  It was beautiful, and was on the hills surrounding Sugarland Run.  I feel lucky to have been paid a visit.

Well that was exciting

It was sunny. I had just gotten to a spot to check it out when my phone went nuts with the warning.
I ran back to the car and the sky was black.

I haven't tried looking for them yet but my guess is, since it's a maple, look for those helicopter seeds. Then the leaves don't look like the maple leaf on the Canadian flag...the look  kinda like poison ivy leaves but wavier.

Anyone with more experience feel free to chime in

Are there other trees, besides Boxelder that ovoids are associated with? Lots of promising areas around me with riparian zones full of debris and nettles, sandy banks, etc. The trees in these zones are typically Sycamore and Poplar.

If you look closely you'll notice a notch in the clouds behind the lowering, that's the part that will sometimes show on radar as a hook echo. Anywhere along that hook is where the tornado would drop if it was going to.
