Also, when walking along the creek, and then turning so your back is to the creek, how far do you walk away from the creek before saying to yourself, "It's time to walk back to the creek, go up a few steps, and explore inland again..."?

Have just come in from an ovoid hunt, hoping perhaps for some ID help here.

I lucked into some ovoids last year the first time I seriously looked for them (https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/25207435) -- but that spot was washed out in a flood and I have gone looking in some new likely habitat.

This find:

Habitat: riparian zone close by a river in central VA, sandy riverbank soil, plenty of buried woody debris but these mushrooms were not visibly growing directly from a woody substrate. I stupidly picked them before photographing them as found, but the first pic here shows the site. Another pic shows a different larger mushroom (russula? lactarius?) sharing their site.

Gills: tan, I have tried to include a picture of them here.

Stem: as shown, slightly fibrous, no veil

Bruising: as shown, some darkening but not obviously blue. These mushrooms all seem sort of old, like they've been up a few days. (We have had some cold overnight temps in this area that seem to have slowed the development of, e.g., the few morels I found so far this spring)

Thanks for any help!

Those are ovoids! Nice find.
Your other larger mushroom is Stropharia rugosoannulata, a wine cap.

I pickled a pound of wine caps the other day. I usually only pick the ones that haven’t opened up yet. Mature wine caps are usually loaded with bugs. Some ovoids too

Thanks!

You seem pretty confident. All my memories of finding them last year seem tied up in the distinctive appearance of the pins and some of the caps of the unpicked mushrooms having flattened out and taken on a pale blue color. Both features were lacking in these two small clusters, but lots of other details are similar.

I'm still waiting on a spore print still but I guess maybe you would say I should relax and accept that these are ovoids?

(Something else I feel I don't know well, yet: are there any truly dangerous ovoid lookalikes? I'm aware of galerina marginata / autumnalis, but I think I've found them in winter, growing obviously on wood, and these don't look like those, and anyway galerinas are out of season now...?)

Don’t think so. They look fairly close but not seeing any bluing and they look fragile.

:whathesaid: I think they are Psathyrella.

Chth0n- I can see bluing on every stem in the picture with the penny.
There are species of galerina that could look kinda similar. I found these two weeks ago-

I've seen G. Marginata and Ovoids on the same log at the same time. So be careful.

This has me concerned.

Is there a sure way to distinguish between the two? And in this respect is it important that I gathered these from soil, not directly from a log or other wood? (I guess I'm asking, do ovoids have a broader range of substrate they can fruit from, than galerinas?)

Great thread, I appreciate the knowledge and help all around. Gonna have to train my eyes for ovoids in the spring, always fixated on morels but I know I've seen ovoids on many occasions in the woods of Virginia and West Virginia. Thanks.

Much love everyone  :mushroom2:

Wubble, Sweet finds bro!  You got log hunting down, for sure.  You 2 have fun this weekend and hope you find some kickass clusters

doctorghosty, Loving the blue in those caps!  So neat how it fades from the margin like that.

ChthOn, Nice lil score ya got there :super:

koods, Can't wait to see those massive clusters finally pop for ya.  That's a nice start tho.  :awesomenod:

Just got word that our project is a success!!  I don't have any pics, since I had stuff to do at apt, but my partner went up and checked things out this afternoon.  He said that every pile had at least 1 small fruit and that the older pile, which was 2 piles we joined with broken branches last yr, had around 20 fruits.  Apparently all the fruits must have emerged from the previous systems, as they were all dried up.  This is excellent news since it's still early season.  This also confirms that the phenotype, same as yesterday, fruits earlier than the other one.  So stoked to see what else comes up from there and also to expand what we have at the end of the season.  :bigblunt:

Also wanted to share this pic of the varying sizes that occur early in the season.  As it gets hotter out the average size will increase and they can get fairly large.  All of these ovoids have opened  their caps, none are pins.
