Is there a deeper meaning to why we collect art?
    #24268032 -

This is a total off-the-cuff idea:

Is there a deeper meaning to why we collect art?

This could be a philosophical discussion but I would like to consider it in a spiritual sense. What's great about shroomery is the diversity of people here. I would like to get some input on this idea...

I was looking at a new article of an iconic painting we all would recognize. It's Edvard Munch's "The Scream". Researchers were trying to figure out why the background of the famous painting had these wavy strange clouds. Some scientists suggested rare weather patterns that inspired the painting's sky and they dove into the science of it. I was thinking maybe this dude was just tripping.

My curiosity on the painting was struck and I did some quick research myself. I learned there is 4 versions of this art that Munch made from 1893-1910 and 3 of them are in different museums and a 4th one sold at auction in 2012.

$119,922,600

Damn! I mean it is an iconic painting of which there's apparently 4. But Damn! So I got to thinking: why do you suppose we value art? Like what is it's core value?

The way I view it, money is a physical representation of energy. We go to work and give our energy to get a currency (money) to accumulate purchasing power. We purchase things to live. Whether it's basic necessities or luxury items it's all apart of the life we live.

Then I thought, if everything is like a trade in energy, what type of transaction is art? If I was to try and look at it in a creative way I might say: we spend money (energy) on art to gain some satisfaction (energy). Whether that satisfaction is comfort, intrigue, assurance, etc., we are accumulating something from the art that can be converted into something else.

I could buy a piece of art that resonated with my childhood for instance, and place the art on a wall in the house. It would occasionally  reminder me of those times. It might give me a feeling of appreciation. Perhaps an appreciation of where I came and where I can go. I use this motivation to press forward though out the day in an charged up way, better than had I not created that appreciative mind frame. This might have to do with why we as humans seek "grounding."

But how would you justify $100,000,000? What type of energy in return to $100,000,000 buy you? I don't think people with that type of money waste energy flippantly. Maybe they do. But it had me thinking anyway. How literal is the power behind art? Is there something we (average people) don't know? Are those people in those auctions really bidding on a tool like it was an item of magic? I never thought about it like this.

Unless they buy it as an investment.

I have friends that own pendants and oil rigs that are worth $50,000+

The people I know In the glass art community , most see it as an investment.  I was at a high end glass art museum/shop.

There was a functional rig that was selling for $1,000,000.    Last year,  it was $250k.

So some buy in hopes that the artists names value will increase.

My buddy bought a rig for $9,000 and sold it for $12,000 like 6 months later.

I have a bunch of canvases around my room that were gifted to me by friends.  I like them. But I definitely wouldn't be dropping $100,000+ on a painting.  Unless it had resale value.

You have to have some serious income to just drop a mill on a painting.  That you plan on keeping just to look at.

Ya I forgot to consider how art can be a form of currency in itself!

It's just a funny thing to me...art. Somewhere past all the value speculation and what not lies the raw product. Artists put so much energy into creation. When you see the prices of some of this stuff, you would almost think somebody was selling magic.

Art is an investment. As you can see, it appreciates in value astronomically, so if one can purchase it for $100M, it can return much more in time.
The first suggested interpretation of Munch's 'The Scream' was found in a 1964 book The Mind which was one of a set of books published by Time-Life in the 1960s (I still have the set). It was suggested that Munch was unconsciously painting his mother's fatal hemorrhage.

Art makes an infinite statement.  All depends on the viewer, but normal perception is fairly limited.

Never know what art will do when tripping.  I had the walls covered in my first place.

Some of the art in my home is whimsical (e.g., fairytale-like characters, gargoyles, grotesques) but a lot of it is intended to be objects of contemplation (e.g., religious symbols, deity statues, mythological beings). Even the carpets that are scattered around were of a type with a center medallion which attracts the yes to a center, and each of which can serve as a spontaneous spot to sit down on to contemplate (especially on trips). Everything is intended to take the mind away from the mundane and purely secular world-view.

Art is worship of the earth and materialism. You can't paint spirituality and any attempt to do so would be materializing spirituality so that it would beg some sort of routine or "lifestyle".

When we are creating art, essentially what we are doing is dragging our meta-physical dick all over something in hopes that people will understand how we feel. Art is about the ego and there's some understanding to be drawn from the fact that lots of gay people love art, because art is anti-god and they're usually assholes/ "me" people.

Art used to be the only porn.

Art coveys meaning like religion.

Art is historical

Today's art usually tries to make a statement, or none at all.

Trying to capture beauty or ego.  Maybe the beauty of ego and it's struggle for anything.

theories about art...are usually decentralized...but centralizing the theory of art..is a cubist's notion of art explained as a grammatical referencing..to the more famous art of the time..which exists in the category of art.. A as a file or classified document..you get to see the capital of art via the black genesis..or goo..or venom like creation..that is a black form of slack..always pinning and pining away into the everything of venom itself..which is a clear salient black object..that can regenerate and take on form..
