Republican Senate Nominee: Victims Of ‘Legitimate Rape’ Don’t Get Pregnant
Evan McMorris-Santoro - August 19, 2012, 2:06 PM

Rep. Todd Akin, the Republican nominee for Senate in Missouri who is running against Sen. Claire McCaskill, justified his opposition to abortion rights even in case of rape with a claim that victims of “legitimate rape” have unnamed biological defenses that prevent pregnancy.

(He doesn't look too creepy, does he?)

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV in an interview posted Sunday. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

Akin said that even in the worst-case scenario — when the supposed natural protections against unwanted pregnancy fail — abortion should still not be a legal option for the rape victim.

“Let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work, or something,” Akin said. “I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.”

A 1996 study by the American Journal of Obstetricians and Gynecologists found “rape-related pregnancy occurs with significant frequency” and is “a cause of many unwanted pregnancies” — an estimated “32,101 pregnancies result from rape each year.”

In a tweet, McCaskill said she was “stunned” by Akin’s comments.

After the interview caused a firestorm, Akin said in a statement that he “misspoke.”

Akin is perhaps the boldest among a crop of conservative 2012 nominees who could hamper GOP efforts to take back the Senate in the fall. Akin has called for an end to the school-lunch program and a total ban on the morning-after pill.

His claim about “legitimate” types of rape is not completely foreign to the current Republican Congress, however. In 2011, the House GOP was forced to drop language from a bill that would have limited federal help to pay for an abortion to only victims of “forcible rape.” Akin was a co-sponsor on the bill.

Nor is this Akin’s first time suggesting some types of rape are more worthy of protections than others. As a state legislator, Akin voted in 1991 for an anti-marital-rape law, but only after questioning whether it might be misused “in a real messy divorce as a tool and a legal weapon to beat up on the husband,” according to a May 1 article that year in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The PollTracker Average shows Akin leading McCaskill by a margin of 49.7 percent to 41.3 percent.

Making shit up is not misspeaking. Too bad he was mis-elected.

Remember folks, science is bad and there is no danger to religious/conservative views.

Note that it is usually men who do not have a problem with a rape victim carrying an unwanted child in their uterus for nine months. Hmmm, I wonder why that is?  :strokebeard:

I still can't believe he said something so ignorant. I wish he was right though. It would be quite the evolutionary feat if the female body would be able to terminate unwanted pregnancies.

Romney fired back that abortion in the case of rape is acceptable, in order to distance himself from Akin. Though Akin's comment were retarded, it also exposes a major flaw in the Conservatives/Evangelical viewpoint. If a fertilized egg is a person, and to kill an embryo/fetus is murder, then aborting under ANY CIRCUMSTANCE is still murder.

Sorry, Pro-Lifers, but you cannot have it both ways.

Self-derailing tangent: Why are Pro-Lifers predominently pro-war? Me no get it.

Damn, you beat me to the punch. I was just typing that up when I saw this post. "Murdering an unborn child" is perfectly fine when the decision is made by a politician but not when it's made by a pregnant woman who doesn't want the pregnancy.

Well, they could win if they pretend to be religious, I still do not know the last President of the USA that wasn't a Christian.

Religion in politics hinders our sciences and stunts our growth.

I think that some of a practical persuasion think that if it wasn't for religion people wouldn't be afraid enough to do good or be good people. I know plenty of good people who are good without being Christian, yet even the Judicial systems builds around religion by making people swear on the Bible which seems to be sorta pointless in reality.

Our nation is built around these lies and deceit as a form of power and control. Those who know that the entire premise is bullshit just go along with it and use it to their advantage to gain power.

It's so much bullshit.

Do you know that the United States of Hypocrisy has a constitutional mandate to separate church and state, but:

1) The White House puts up a tax payer funded christmas tree every year. They hold parties, payers, and mass paid for by tax payers. The president consults with spaghetti monster experts to form public policy.

2) The White House and congress regularly host "prayer breakfasts" funded by tax payers.

3) The army has multiple official chaplains on the payroll.

4) The air force has multiple official chaplains on the payroll.

5) The navy has multiple official chaplains on the payroll.

6) The marines has multiple official chaplains on the payroll.

7) Even the god damned fucking coast guard has multiple official chaplains on the payroll.

8) The Senate has an official Chaplain's Office paid for by tax payers.

9) The House of Representative has an official chaplain on the payroll paid for by tax payers.

11) Our fucking pledge of allegiance references god. Our money references god. Our legal system references god. Oaths required of judges, military personnel, and government employees reference god. Some require swearing with one hand on a bible.

10) The United States of Hypocrisy itself has on official Office of the Chaplain paid for, that's right, by tax payers.

That's me, the tax payer. I'm extorted of tax money, under threat of imprisonment or death if necessary, just like any other street thug organization and forced to pay an obscene fraction of my income for religious activities that I find personally repugnant and reprehensible and disgusting with every fiber of my being, and there's nothing I can do about it.

I so deeply hate what this country has become at the hands of the religious that I have trouble putting it into words.

Humans suck. If I had a button that would erase my species from history, I would press it without a moment of hesitation. The only thing that can fix us is my giant asteroid, and unfortunately, I'm not likely to get my wish on that.

I can't wait till we get a sizable Muslim community in the armed forces and some of them want Wahhabi Imams on the payroll to preach about suicide attacks on the US.  This is allready going on to some extent in the Prisons- thanks to the special privledge given to religious activities in US jails.

The other religious people are the ones holding open the gates for the barbarians to enter- the Christians should consider that for a second and realize why the founders thought it wasa good idea to seperate religion and government.

It makes no sense when you consider they claim to believe the evil forces of liberalism and idolatry have corrupted the US- if that is true than surely the safest thing is to wall off the government from religious institutions... but then consistancy and forethought are pretty much antethetical to religious thought.

Yeah, its dumb.

Personally I have grave concerns about abortion as well, and disagree with it in many cases.  I never got how people made the leap from that position to making it illegal, though.

Some people you should be able to kill, like those threatening your life.  If these retards read any of the work on this subject they might have some reasonable positions, but they just accept it as an article of faith.  (in my experience, it comes with pretty sexist views too- attributing the decision to the father of the pregnancy by default).

Sorry, Pro-Lifers, but you cannot have it both ways.

What drives me crazy about the pro-choice movement though is that pretty much all pro-choicers completely miss this, and their arguments almost always do nothing to address any of the core assumptions that are behind why most pro-lifers are pro-life.  A woman's right to control her body is completely trumped by the fetus's right to live if that fetus is a person and has all the rights of a person, regardless of pretty much any mitigating circumstance you can think of.  The only way to change a pro-lifer's position is to convince him that a fetus is not a person and/or that said fetus forfeits rights that people normally have just because it happens to be inside a womb.  The only thing that drives me crazier is when you have even more irrational pro-lifers like apparently Romney who completely cede to these ass-backwards rape and incest arguments and end up in a position where, by their own lights, murder can suddenly become justified simply based on the contingencies of the victim's conception and whether or not their mother wishes it had happened.

Everyone's got something they don't support in the government though. The Quaker pays for the military, the Creationist pays for evo-bio research and public school science classes, the anti-gay activist pays the salaries of judges who uphold the 14th Amendment, the Catholic priest pays for birth control and viagra for senators, the Scientologist funds the FDA's psychiatric drug approval process, the libertarian finds pretty much none of his dollars well-spent, etc. etc.  That's just pretty much how social contracts work, you've only been wronged in that you live in a society where most people are religious in some way.

My rant is nothing about what I do and don't support. It's about what is codified in very clear language in the founding document of our nation.

Separation of church and state is not my wish. It is the highest law of the land. And it is being bypassed by hypocrite "patriots" who look the other way because the law being broken works in their favor.
