The 'ABSOLUTE TRUTH' is unnattainable....
    #979684 - 10/21/02 01:26 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Before I go off on trying to explain an idea I've been toying with for the last little while, I'd like to state prior to my rant that this is just an idea - it's not my belief, but I have yet to be able to discredit it, so here goes....

Take a second look at the way things work by what we know, and by this I don't mean universal quantum mechanical technicallities; let's step back into the box for a second and work with what we KNOW (or think we know), as human beings.
If you take a look at Mother Nature and the way some of the Earth's less intelligent inhabbitants work with one another, we can see some pretty damn good examples of why I don't think us, as human beings, will ever get the 411 on "the big secret".

I'd like to start off with Fish.  Fish are fish.  They swim, they eat, and they survive.  That's what fish do, and for the most part that's ALL fish do.  Granted they get a lil' su'in su'in here and there, being that the need to procreate is 'instinctive' and responsive to the seasons, or so those guys in the lab coats tell us.  As far as we know, fish don't wonder where the water came from, they don't ponder where the water is going, nor do they sit around and discuss the fact that they're damnright confused about how they got there. They just ARE. That's fish, and fish are that.

Next lets look at Frogs.  Frogs can be explained pretty much the same way as Fish, except they don't swim, they hop.  Whoopdie frickin' doo.  Fish that hop.  That's what frogs are.  Some are transexual, yes, but just because they have the ability to change their sex depending on what's needed most for reproduction, doesn't mean they're not frogs.  Yay for frogs.

I'd like you to take a glance now at Birds.  Birds do what they need to do to survive, (sometimes incapacitating fish), but the rest of the time they just chirp and sing and wake up those snotty nosed, pot-head'ed'ed teenagers that like to sleep in on Saturday's.  They know what they need to do, and they do it (Build nests, find worms for the little birds, etc).  Granted they fly into the occassional window here and there, but that just goes to show how seriously fucked up nature is as a result of man-kind's ferocity to the environment.

Now if you look at all three, I don't think the Mr. Frog sits around on his lilypad wondering where his lilypad came from, just like I don't think Mr. Worm-Eater wonders how the air that is his interstate came to being, and well, Fish are just frogs that can't hop.

The common thing we find in MOST species is that we don't think they think about how they came to being; they just do what they need to do to survive.  Squirrels stock up nuts year round so they can survive the winter, and I'm sure if you checked their bank accounts you'd see more than a week's worth of my salary to boot!

The funny thing about humans is that we KNOW we're depleting the Earth's resources; we KNOW that eventually, we're going to run out of water, or air, or whatever it's gonna be that kicks the shitter first, and when that day comes, whoever's runnin' the show is definately gonna have some 'splainin' to do.  Meanwhile, we sit back, relax in our less-than-comfortable (I don't speak for everyone) environments, plug on at our daily routine with hopes that someday soon, our situation will get better.  Maybe that's what humans do - fuck up - maybe that's the meaning of life - make as MANY mistakes as possible so other civilizations off on distant planets can read their 'Daily Human' subscription and point out their errors before they've been made.  Maybe, but I don't think so.  Rather than get up and do something about the issues we need to solve to correct the problems that are bound to come, we sit back and discuss why we're here, where we're going to be in 1000 years, and even better - Where did the universe come from....

Most of you who post on here seem like some damn intelligent people; but I tend to see a lot of the threads going towards the "I know more about this topic than you and you're position is not 100% correct so therefor I'm going to slam it to the ground with my superior experience in the field" attitude.  Granted when one feels strongly about something, they get emotional and as an automatic defense mechanism, defensive, but don't we all want the same answers?

20th Century fish did not find the 'Ultimate Truth' about the source of water, just as 20th century Kangaroo's did not find out why it's so damn hot in the desert.  I'm kind of doubting that 21st century humans will come to the grand conclusion about why we're here, and I'm thinking I have a pretty damn good idea why:  IF Aliens (and I use this term loosely) exists, which I'm sure I think most of us can agree on, and IF they can see how we run our little planitarial-clusterfuck of an organization, then they probably DON'T want to give us the 411 because think about it - If we can't take care of our own planet, how the hell are we going to take care of someone else's?

*I* feel that we need to work on stabalizing the global population at a sustainable rate which will ensure that we're going to survive, let alone find out the 'absolute truth' on the 5 W's.  Most of us spend countless combined hours watching pre-programmed television (not me I might add - I waste my time on my computer) or doing SOMETHING that doesn't bennefit the species as a whole - and I'm not saying you have to change that, but maybe we could take a moment to think of how selfish we're actually being, wanting to know everything we're trying to figure out?

Feel free to contradict the weft of my dhillemma (sp?) with whatever ya got...  I'm pretty open minded.

(And on that note, I'd like to go back to the transexual frog thing for a second - they do what they do due to a limitation or abundance of resources for blah blah blah [you know what I'm trying to say, and if you don't, do some reading on frogs] - now don't get me wrong, I turn my head at T&A as much as the next guy, but maybe homosexuality is evolution's way of keeping us alive)

P.S. - I are teh n00b to philosophy

Hey great post. I think about shit like this all the time. If we could just get idiots like George W Bush out of there positions of power, maybe we could come closer to what ever it is that humans must acheive. Personally I think we should preserve nature, be happy, and explore our minds with psychedelics. We need more hemp and less oil. More mushrooms and less TV. The meaning of life is to be happy. I liked to think we should all be a little like hippies...but a little more productive than the standard hippy.

I like your thesis, but you lost my vote when you brought up "aliens".

Well Sclorch, I apologize for striking that nerve that you can't seem to get rid of, but whether you're willing to admit it or not, I'm willing to say that without a doubt, there's life out there SOMEWHERE.  When I said I use the term loosely, I meant in a sense of life not of this planet.  Whether thats some energetical beam of light that can decide where it wants to go, piles of goo that can't communicate, or your run of the mill E.T. that crash landed on Earth on their way home from work, I leave that entirely up to you.  I think I know where you're coming from when you say 'you lost my vote...' in that you don't think there's other beings watching down on us 24/7, and to be perfectly honest with you, I don't think there is either, but incase you just woke up and haven't fully turned on the sarcasm receptors, it WAS intended to amuse ALL those who read.

I'd also like to note that it means a lot to me that you even considered giving me your vote, because up until now I've viewed you as someone who posts for the pure argumentative sadistic pleasure of pissing people off...  maybe I just haven't read too many of your posts

I have little control over the makeup of my audience.  Also, I am aiming my posts at those that are already familiar with me and my writing style (to the point w/o flowers), so I don't worry about other's perceptions.  I don't really care if I piss off some passerby... the posters that are worth a damn will stick around regardless of their perception of me.  Usually it takes a dozen (thick) posts before people realize my intentions (even thought the disclaimer has always been there ).

maybe I just haven't read too many of your posts

That may be...

The last time I tried to vote a thread, the server basically said that I should piss off because I had not enough postings. Now I feel like a god.

Anyway, thanks for sharing.

great post man!!

>maybe we could take a moment to think of how selfish we're actually being,

yeah... and if you are right, and we cant know the truth, then we're wasting our time being so selfish.  knowledge is power.  maybe reality reveals itself as much as it wants to be, or else we get too powerful for our own good.

take ACTION instead of sitting around PONDERING

I like what you have to say a lot.  The thing is almost everybody does want to have a sustainable population and resources and all that good stuff.  However, everyone feels like one person doing the right thing isn't going to make a difference so why bother inconveniencing myself by conserving if everyone else is just going to keep on wasting.  I think the authorities that control the economy need to make it more appealing to be environmentally friendly so more people will do it.  Step up researching alternative energy sources, provide incentives for buying clean cars, homes, products, etc.  Unfortunately, there isn't much you or I can do about this beyond living our philosophy and voting for the people who will make it happen.  Not much we can do except sit and ponder the mysteries of the universe.
