Things you wish weren't true about the human condition...
    #13881585 -

I wish suffering weren't the norm. I wish there was some sort of objective meaning/purpose to each of our existence. I wish people weren't so cruel to each other whenever they get the chance and/or whenever it benefits them. I wish there were a such thing as "true love", and that everybody experienced it. I wish we didn't have to die.

What do you wish? :sun:

I agree with most everything you stated except for wishing there was an objective meaning/purpose to our existence... I'm just fine with being able to create my own subjective meaning for my life.  Also it might be nice if people weren't so gullible and unintelligent.

Gullibility and unintelligence is a part of our "Human Condition"

Consider what 'condition' means- it is a temporary thing highly dependent upon circumstances..

Our human Condition isnt how we are Naturally.. It is something we have done just that with-
Conditioned it..

And in relation to this, and to the OP

Good point, that too would depend upon the definition of what "Natural" is..
The mainstream accepted definition is anything to do with the materiel world existing beyond the scope of Humans and their activities.
By that account it's very unnatural..
But to call something Natural means it follows within the laws/essense of Nature..
Is human un-nature, a part of nature?

In that case it would be very natural..

My point still being, Natural or not, The Human Condition, has been Conditioned..
Here's a good question...

What is "The Human Condition"?
Because if it's so Natural, why not just call it being "Human."?

Doesn't it intrigue you that you can enter certain states of consciousness where you could actually turn into a chicken, lay an egg and fly through the sky? The experience is a real experience in every sense. What we can experience is only limited to our imagination. It seems to me like this is a trait that most animals do not have.

I don't have the answer to that. How could I know? Of course it is horrible, but do you really think a human being could fathom the workings of the Universe? AS individuals we are looking at these things from a limited perspective. An experience as a starving child could give an amazing perspective if we do take the experiences of this life with us. Comparatively what comes to mind is the spoiled rich kid who cannot appreciate anything.

I know my own suffering has been my greatest teacher. I couldn't imagine the shallow asshole I would be if I had coasted through life with no problems. I think this is the case for everyone. Suffering is horrible. But I think it is serving a purpose. I believe our physical bodies to be transitory vehicles for our consciousness. I believe on a higher level we choose to have this experience. Earth the school.

I was put in this acne medication which literally makes your face look like it's falling off because it supposedly worked by drying out your entire face. This was a profound lesson in compassion in the sense I learned about the idea of physical appearance and the weight we shouldn't be putting on it. It did not lesson my suffering until my face cleared up but it taught me the lesson.

But the lesson was about not putting weight into appearance because to do so is to suffer, no? So you suffered from the weight you put in, and removing the weight was relieving the suffering?

You don't think learning that we shouldn't put so much emphasis on physical appearance helped you in any way to accept your acne and not feel so bad about it?

Isotretinoin: Depression  -  Wikipedia
Quote:
Since the 1980s, scientific research has suggested a relationship between isotretinoin administration and the onset of psychological symptoms including depression, suicidal ideation, and psychosis. However, there have also been studies arguing that there is no evidence of such a link. In a study in 2006, it was demonstrated for the first time that isotretinoin administration enhances depression-related behaviors in mice. The mechanism by which this occurs was not elucidated, although altered neuronal gene regulation and changes in hippocampal neurogenesis were thought to be involved.

Several recent studies have shown a link between isotretinoin and clinical depression. Psychiatrist Dr. Doug Bremner found decreased orbifrontal cortex function on brain imaging in patients treated with Accutane (isotretinoin). Bremner's study, which utilized positron emission tomography (PET), found that patients treated with isotretinion experienced an average 21% decrease in orbifrontal-lobe brain activity. However, there were no changes in the depressive state of the patients that could be measured with the Hamilton depression scale. Bremner's findings have prompted members of the scientific community to call for more studies regarding isotretinion's links to depression and suicidal behavior.

Various case reports of depression, suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, and suicide in patients treated with isotretinoin have been reported to the U.S. FDA Adverse Events Reporting System, with 431 cases reported between 1982 and May 2001 – of these, 37 patients had committed suicide. This suicide rate is in line with national rates and does not exceed the national average.

Studies have shown that patients with acne, the population group eligible to receive isotretinoin therapy, have an increased risk of clinical depression compared with the general population. Chee Hong describes Isotretinoin-related depression as "an idiosyncratic side-effect", claiming, often anxiety can bring on acne and depression, creating more anxiety. Correspondingly, treatment of severe acne with isotretinoin has been shown to reduce anxiety and depression, for tests have shown acne to be a main depressant in most tested patients' lives.

Spontaneous suicides, or suicides where the victim exhibited no signs of clinical depression, of Accutane users have been reported. These reports signal that Accutane may be able to cause users to make extremely irrational decisions, and could explain why the FDA and pharmaceutical companies have failed to establish a causal relationship between Accutane and depression as Accutane could be causing the brain to experience something different than clinical depression. The fact that some suicides are "spontaneous" means that Chee Hong's aforementioned "idiosyncratic" theory is false in many cases of Accutane- related suicide.

Former U.S. Representative Bart Stupak believes unadvertised psychological side-effects from the drug drove his teenage son to commit suicide in 2000.

Because wishing is the counter to problems that we don't know how to deal with. If we didn't wish then we'd actually be dealing with our problems. Either through acceptance or functional means.

I've heard from more than one source that the human experience (physical reality) is one of the hardest, scariest teachings this Universe has to offer. I think we are learning something very profound from being here.

Alphalf

We?

Thats a dream you know.

What about the 20 000 kids that died of starvation today? What did they learn?

No seriously.

What?

Cosmonaut

Alpha
You don't have an answer to that because you assume  that suffering exists on behalf of some larger purpose in the universe with which we all share.

Instead look at all that you know and attempt to find patterns in those things with which you can attempt to understand your own life with.

For example, my theory is that suffering does not lead to some greater purpose in life and that it has no significance other than what the human chooses to do with the suffering. My theory, if applied to the phenomena we see in the world equally, can hold 100% true for everyone living here. However, when it comes to your theory, it seems as if it only holds true for people in the west who can sit around and ponder what the meaning of life is, because they aren't working in a factory to feed their families, or in the children case, starving to death without a mother, alone in a world where no one shows you any care.

My theory fits nicely with your theory and I don't need to search for answers as to why it doesn't. Yours makes you search because the phenomena we experience with our own two eyes contradicts it.

Theory creation is all about identifying patterns within all the events you wish to understand together.

If you remember this, you won't go off on some tangent and actually life becomes a l

Well the word "problem" is tricky. Our understanding of the word would change if we weren't such wishful critters. Everyone has their own set of problems revolving around what they want. Take out wanting, and the problems the world provides are the ones we need to deal with. And yes, they would be very recognizable I'd think.

Yep. That's one part I've gotten pretty good at accepting. Decisions fall where they may and the consequences come as they may. Past be past, future be future, what is happening is what is happening. No sense dreaming of a different outcome than what is right here. If I want to make changes, make changes to what is happening not mentally to what has happened.

I never said it wasnt possible..
I'm saying, I cant imagine how I could live in a world with no pain/suffering..

Here's a point from an excellent movie..

"Wally: Yeah, but I mean, I would never give up my electric blanket,
Andre. I mean, because New York is cold in the winter. I mean, our
apartment is cold! Its a difficult environment. I mean, our life
is tough enough as it is. Im not looking for ways to get rid of a
few things that provide relief and comfort. I mean, on the
contrary, Im looking for more comfort because the world is very
abrasive. I mean, Im trying to protect myself because, really,
theres these abrasive beatings to be avoided everywhere you look!
Andre: But, Wally, dont you see that comfort can be dangerous? I
mean, you like to be comfortable and I like to be comfortable too,
but comfort can lull you into a dangerous tranquility." - My dinner with Andre

How would I even know that the so called "pleasure and joy" im feeling, actually is pleasure and joy? Again, where's the contrast?

i wouldn't mind continual unconditioned bliss

How would you even know what you have? And say you did have the contrast of pain and suffering before hand- how long would this bliss satisfy?

That makes total sense to me, I'm somewhat of a rebel myself. Although I tend to rebel against things that I'm ordered to do, I wouldn't consider an objective purpose an "order", and I don't necessarily see it as something that I'm "supposed" to do. I see it as something that will be fulfilled no matter what I do, and something that I am.

If something only means something to me, it doesn't really mean anything IMO in relation to the greater scheme of things--it's kind of like how there's no such thing as a "private language".

My pubes only mean something to me.

Why would that be more satisfying though?

Peace of mind, I guess.

Confirmation that I actually have some sort of definite value, as opposed to the personal guessing games I often have about myself. :shrug2:

Well, in this scenario, would I know that I have an objective meaning, even though I don't know what it is? If so, then I would still have the peace of mind that I have a definite value, and until I find it, my purpose would be to discover it.

Well that means something to me..

I cant perceive how something could mean something to someone, and not directly or indirectly have meaning for someone else..

Though, what do your pubes mean to you?

Perhaps i'm speaking very subjectively, but that fact that things mean something to you, means something to me..
Like if you find meaning in life for example, that means something to me.. Because of relationships.. Social and material.. Everything gives meaning to everything else..

Who is to say that the DID get something from dipping their feet? Who is to say that they DID dip their feet and they were somewhere else?

These questions don't help understand reality. It's really difficult to explain to you, but simply put, you haven't made any attempt to prove this.

You rather just hold on to your belief even though there is obvious evidence against it.

I agree that this is the most pleasurable way to live your life. Its the most awesome but its good to remember that even if we choose to not take the opportunity to change our problems, we only still answer to ourselves for it and no one else.

That is the single most motivating thing in the world for me; just keep on making up your mind about the way things are, learn from what has happened and apply, apply, apply.

Fuck yeah!

It definitely gives an edge over those who get stuck in the past or future. Learning from what is happening is what our brains do well when they're allowed to take it in.

My point being my metaphysical beliefs really have no bearing on the practical aspect of reducing suffering - which as I stated I still try to do in my life and those around me. I'm not trying to prove anything to anyone. Life is ultimately a subjective experience - Why get so bent out of shape over what other people believe?

And actually there is no evidence against my beliefs. There is no empirical evidence for it, but that doesn't mean there is evidence against it.

Woah Tiger. Woah.

You must be a mind reader as well and can tell my emotional state through a computer.

Sheesh, someone has a real investment in this belief. I guesse it does make you feel better about the
20 000.

Whatever.

Exactly. The only obstacle there is pushing through the guilt, they sense of failure and/or learning from it.

What I have a distaste for is that when you learn, you can easily get stuck in failure and resentment.

It's a fine line, I hate my mind for the most part, its wastes so much time of useless things.

Like I do sales for example and in sales there are good days and bad days, because thats how customer service is, unpredictable. Still even though I know this 100%, I(because of my mind) feel good or bad about myself, depending on the sales...no matter what.

Its ridiculous....I hate that.

I think instead of apologizing or making rash judgements on the state of my emotions, it would be far better to substantiate your claims.

Now, taking from what you gave me, you can't prove or disprove that suffering exists because of some larger meaning.

If this is the case, why believe in either of the conclusions? What makes you say that suffering probably does exist because of a deeper meaning in life that we all have?

In my opinion, it is correct to say that you cant prove it because no one has died and returned to say.

However, I would say that my best guess is that it does not at all serve any purpose. It is just what it is, suffering. It can be changed and that is that.

I say this because there is nothing to me that says that suffering exists for these purposes and because clearly 20 000 kids who died yesterday and the day before and the day before and today seems to show otherwise. The reason being this; can you remember your life 100% prior to the age of 5? If it is true that we learn from suffering for something greater, what could a kid possibly learn if ALL he knew was suffering AND more importantly, if the memory of a child is not even developed?

For these strong and factual reasons I believe it makes way more sense to guess that there is no reason for the suffering.
