I have a hard time buying that too.  I think most of us want there to be a nice explanation for why suffering exists in the world and in particular don't like facing the possibility that all this pain and misery could have no point at all.  :shrug2:

Then another question, rhetorically as this is getting away from the OP.

What are we?

As far as we know we are biological organisms much like a pig or a chicken.

As far as we know? that's quite a claim..
As far as You know.. I happen to know farther..

"We" is not a dream, any more then here and now is..
And as such, here's a better question for you to ask.

What did You learn from the 20 000 kids that died of starvation today?

Could we know happiness without the context and comparison of suffering?

I feel like some of us have already experienced enough suffering to provide a context for future happiness... no need to have any more.

I've heard from more than one source that the human experience (physical reality) is one of the hardest, scariest teachings this Universe has to offer. I think we are learning something very profound from being here.

We?

Thats a dream you know.

I don't have the answer to that. How could I know? Of course it is horrible, but do you really think a human being could fathom the workings of the Universe? AS individuals we are looking at these things from a limited perspective. An experience as a starving child could give an amazing perspective if we do take the experiences of this life with us. Comparatively what comes to mind is the spoiled rich kid who cannot appreciate anything.

I know my own suffering has been my greatest teacher. I couldn't imagine the shallow asshole I would be if I had coasted through life with no problems. I think this is the case for everyone. Suffering is horrible. But I think it is serving a purpose. I believe our physical bodies to be transitory vehicles for our consciousness. I believe on a higher level we choose to have this experience. Earth the school.

It can certainly be one of life's greatest teachers, and the wisdoms obtained by experiencing it can be invaluable.  I don't think all people suffering have the opportunity to learn from it, however, nor that it's always necessary.

I wonder if the lessons aren't always pertaining to lessening that same suffering? Anyone have an example of a lesson learned from suffering that didn't go towards relief of some sort?

You either don't know or you believe you do.

I have beliefs, like everyone else, but I don't know anything for sure. My beliefs change when I have experiences that contradict them and show me a different perspective.

In junior high and early high school I had really bad acne. I was put in this acne medication which literally makes your face look like it's falling off because it supposedly worked by drying out your entire face. This was a profound lesson in compassion in the sense I learned about the idea of physical appearance and the weight we shouldn't be putting on it. It did not lesson my suffering until my face cleared up but it taught me the lesson.

But the lesson was about not putting weight into appearance because to do so is to suffer, no? So you suffered from the weight you put in, and removing the weight was relieving the suffering?

You don't think learning that we shouldn't put so much emphasis on physical appearance helped you in any way to accept your acne and not feel so bad about it?

For myself yea, but the positive benefit I saw was my interaction with other people. It's like a lesson which kills two birds with one stone. Can you really divorce the lesson of alleviating suffering from the sufferer? IMO everything is a lesson with the right perspective.

No, I've no evidence to convince you of what you are, besides me Being what I am.. It's not my place to give you evidence of such a thing. And besides you wouldnt even believe it if I did have evidence.

Because the evidence is all around you, and you Still don't believe it. I didn't either.. and parts of me still don't. But I know that I am far more then just a biological organism.

What is a Biological Organism?

I feel ya, Acutane sucked ass.. These kinds of things not only help me with my own suffering, but help me empathize with others'.. In regards to physical appearances..
