I am in an alter stated so sorry if it dosent make any sence.

Looking at the buddist way of thinking, to evolve and reach enlighment must be done without your animal instincts sexual desires.Basicaly I am confused can enlighment be achived with haveing a girlfriend but not getting attached. Or does it mean simply to denia the biological urges and to help others rather than to go round and round in circle playing ego games with each other.

Buddhism is not quite clear about celibacy. On the one extreme, you have Tantra, where sex is used as a tool to achieve enlightenment. On the other extreme is a small tibetan sect where you are castrated upon joining the temple. Pick your path.  :wink:

And, of course, helping others is a biological urge.

Any good buddhism I have read encourages all natural animal behavior, including love making. Just so long you don't desire it, and you don't just focus on the labido.

The most liberating, transcendent, and spiritual experiences of my life have come making love to the one woman I have loved more than all others, my soul mate, my wife. Being with her encompasses the intellectual, the emotional and the animal - all major aspects of what it means to be a human and be alive. Being celibate means blocking yourself off from a wonderful aspect of existence, to be open the joys of our nature is an integral part of understanding/knowing what life is.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Dear Evolving,

Thank you for that wonderful, beautiful post.

The thought just occurred to me though that celibacy and monogamy have something in common. In both cases one is harnessing one's sexual energy in a relatively focused way, and not squandering it in dissipation and indiscriminate sexual activity. In that way they're closer to one another than either of them is to sleeping around. They both take a measure of self-discipline.

Congratulations on your good fortune (and wise choices)! You have the best of both worlds.
