"Religion is the biggest and most persistent pestilence humanity has ever suffered from. Only superstition and mumbo jumbo beliefs approach the damage religion has done to us. "
Hehe, I am very critical to religion too, but wouldn't go so far to call it a pestilence.
At least it is a hint and remark for many people to their own spirituality. Many use them as sign to research 'true' spirituality which has its best counter check from within.
Maybe, without religion, humanity would forget spirituality and the ways toward it faster than it already does.
To make religions exclusive is the bigges and most destructive fault humans have ever done to them. And the splitting goes on and on...
On this way, they (the religions and the religious) will destroy themselves. No need to hurry.

Highly unlikely IMO.

On this way, they (the religions and the religious) will destroy themselves. No need to hurry.

The danger is that they take us all with them.

So one has to further study the connections between spirituality and religion, imho. Else, every spirituality somewhen will lead to some tainted or untainted religion, which on the long run will become tainted through material power.

So let's slow them to make them understand, bridge, research, explain and solve their differences and from those resolving hostilities. I am with you there

I am very critical to religion too, but wouldn't go so far to call it a pestilence.

I don't see how anyone can look at the Middle East (and not just today but for the last several centuries) and see anything but a rotting pestilence of religion doing things like killing woman who don't dress properly.

Maybe, without religion, humanity would forget spirituality

I doubt this. The world and this forum is full of spiritual people who reject religion. Count me among them. When I study nature, I'm always moved spiritually by it's power and beauty. But I don't make war on my neighbors to force-feed them what I've learned. That's the difference between spirituality and religion.

So let's slow them to make them understand, bridge, research, explain and solve their differences and from those resolving hostilities.

How can this ever happen? Even here on Shroomery where so many consider themselves enlightened, we've had to separate the Spirituality forum from the Religion forum to keep the religious people satisfied. The spiritual never had a problem with a single forum.

The spiritual open their ideas to the purification and refinement of analysis in an attempt to converge on Truth and cull away what analysis reveals doesn't make sense. But the members of the religion forum, like those who imprisoned Galileo, insist their ideas are correct and refuse to analyze them even if, like the sun revolving around the Earth, they make no sense in the light of the evidence. They just believe and get upset with anyone who points out a flaw in their belief. The Catholics got upset and imprisoned poor old Galileo for doing the same thing.

And religious bigotry continues as always, even here...

2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

The pyramids weren't built by slaves. I was of the opinion that that theory has been largely discredited. It was the egyptians themselves, driven by their beliefs, and possibly paid for their work.

I have to to my slave labor now, or I would refute more of your arguments.

At least, they're still humans 'approaching' religion.
Intentionally misinterpreting it should lead to the worst case scenario, that a religion could offer.

If one 'discovers' some spiritual 'dependency/connection/influence', one is naturally urged to prove and disprove it with others.

Just constantly confront it with reason.

Please show sources for you contention that the Egyptians built those things.

There is evidence that the peasant class was conscripted to work during the months in which their fields lay fallow, and that they received room & board for their efforts.  However, the largest # of workers still appear to have been slaves.  Either way, my point stands.  If the peasants worked in order to survive during the winter or if the slaves worked in order to avoid execution, it was still about survival.

For the Pharaohs, it was likely about both power AND religion.  The one with the biggest tomb wins!

Yes, they were paid in beer.

I think it was what would boil down to "in todays terms" as 8 beers per day. Just enough to wipe from your memory all the hard work you had just done, and just enough incentive to wake up and do it again.

I can not believe this post has reached 11 pages...

I was trying to "stay away" for a few days to "let the dust settle"

I can clearly see that did not happen...

I was hoping to come back and see a "dead" post.

Im not here to discredit or disprove any religion.

I think that to be "Christian" is to ask questions...

Blind faith and free will do not mix so very well.

And for those of you who claim the whole "if god made us in his image" card. Well... maybe WE are all his "first child".

That is why he is called the "Father"
