Fasting to connect with god
    #7263360 -

My life is moving away from psychedelics at this point. At least for now. I can't predict the future but for now my life really is moving away from psychedelics. Fasting has had my attention for a long time but I've never really seen one through. I've always considered it starvation which seemed against my different but equally as valid animal nature. However with further research I have learned that a juice fast is not starvation.

However, are juice fasts capable of heightening my spiritual awareness? Can you reach a peak and become closer to god if you are on a juice fast and not a water fast? I've always hypothesized that the peak was actually from some form of starvation but perhaps I was dead wrong.

I don't have an answer for you, but curious as to how long you are fasting for....?

You can get these visions from a lot of things not just fasting. I have not personally done this but many people including blood relatives have had visions in a sweat. A sweat is like this hut made of willows where they put very hot rocks... like a sauna but much hotter. The intense heat really does bring on visions for many people if you can handle it.

Although they don't do this anymore some of the older indians where I grew up put sticks through the skin in their backs and suspended themselves in the air for long periods to get these same visions.

It almost seems like stress or very hard conditions is what brings on a state of delirium that in your head appear as visions. I'm sure fasting works exactly the same way...

I imagine if you drank sugary juices that fasting is pretty comfortable and would not bring on any visions. If you drank just water, who knows?

the way i see it, when your body is not distracted by the food it is processing, it has time to realize itself

really if my stomach is empty for a half or whole day i feel a bit tripped out and really high.

and then i sit down to eat and fully understand
you need just the tiniest portions

so perhaps these knowledges will quick and aide me in more sensible living soon.

Fasting is not starvation, not even a fast without juice or water. Fasting once weekly or a few times a month or even a year can have very positive effects on the digestive system, provided you don't overeat in the days immediately preceeding or following the fast.

I've never done a fast longer than two days, but I can highly recommend the shorter ones.

As far as spiritual benefits. Hmm. They are definitely there!!

The first time I fasted for a whole day I remained silent as well. I read "The Way of Zen" by Alan Watts, which struck just the right chords. During the afternoon I tried some of the basic breathing techniques he outlined and - WHOAAAA! I had my first experience of looking down on myself from a higher state of consciousness. I remember remarking to myself, "Hmm! What a fascinating phenomenon 'I' must be to the people who know 'me'!"

Later fasts have all varied. My last fast, a two-day, was excellent in terms of my yoga and meditation. It was also a great challenge because I worked a really tough night shift at my restaurant and had to avoid my animalistic desires to devour all the great Italian food I had access to.

Other fasts have been really difficult. Once before a major LSD trip I fasted and felt absolutely miserable the whole day, as I realized how much of my life revolves around imagining what great food I'll eat next meal. Reflecting on it after that trip, it was definitely worth it.

I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

no need to be attached to the other, that is if you wish to cut off attachment to ego

Yeah totally man.  You will feel stoned and giggly after about 8 hours, and it persists all through the next day if you keep the fast alive.

if i take ego and look at it deeply an entire line of thinking is annihilated

what ego,
is there one?

samsara is nirvana and there is an "I" that experiences nirvana
just like i experience being stoned, or high

perhaps being high is the ego being "pushed aside" or "crucified" or "dying" but, I still am.

so really, ego this or that hmmm maybe.

put i mean, the hermits path is really not so super, i would prefer the sangha path.

however i have no idea what in the world i'm talking about or what i would prefer or what is good or not and etc.

i am guilty of desiring company
but this is something all humans are guilty of

do you advocate hermitage over sangha?
