those are all cyans in that pic? Or is it just a cyan with fibs around it?

in that one size comparison pic, it's just a cyan with fibs around it.

the only problem with me is, some of them came out of same patch

this is what is throwing people off

or rather, I should say that sometimes they are in the same patch, but often they have their own patch...the ones that get really big, they have seperated themselves from cyans maybe for a couple years..

but even that is not consistent...so I can't say much more than that...We just don't know yet...there are too many variables here

and for people in other countries to tell us here in San Francisco what this is, purely based on microscopic evidence is rediculous to us

It's just lame...why?...because under a microscope, all of these are nearly identical....why they change shape and size like that?....you tell me..your guess is as good as anybody's at this point

i have a picture from today of 2 fibs growing a foot away from 2 cyans. I notice that the fibs tend to lay down under their own weight also. The caps are too heavy for them. I also have 2 different types of fibs or possibly this cyclone, which is not what we have been calling friscosas, and friscosas. I clone a fib which is an absolute viable isolate and it doesnt show any cycloning

well, there you go..You see it too...it's one hell of an ID problem..or rather, one hell of a complete monograph problem...it's just too many variables

in other words, it does no good to describe it under a microscope for hunters...In that same respect, it also does no good to describe this under cyanescens., or for that matter, and especially that matter, psilocybe cyanofibrillosa (this matches none of them macroscopically)...(this is as far away from cyanofibrillosa as cyans are to stuntzii)..so what does one do?

you update the description...at least based on consistency

or rather, you update the description if they are, in fact, the same species, cyanescens

Otherwise, you call them something else....hmmm..they don't match cyanofibrillosa either

again, wtf?

everybody has been caling them fibs, fibrillosa, friscosa, etc....nuh uh...me don;t think so

LOL...ya see?

Here is the typical sf transient, aka a real deal bag lady. Check the lipstick

Here are the two growing next to each other. The eaten ones are cyans.

Here are fibs/fibs right next to each other. Wtf???

yep, you see it too, Tahoe.....well there ya go...it is indeed a true enigma for the time being...it explains why we can't come up with proper description quite yet.....stay tuned, is all I can say....hehe

Only one answer! George Bush!!!! he blew up the levies, He caused global warming, and He is responsible for acid rain. Acid rain is causing these mushrooms to change forms!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Friscosa Microscopic Composite [Re: burtonRebel]

Friscosa Microscopic Composite
Sample:
Location: Berkeley, California, USA
Collection Date: 12/06
Preparation: Dry specimen rehydrated and mounted in 2.5% KOH
Collector: Waylitjim
Comments: Tentatively called Friscosa or Cyanofriscosa

This excellent microscopic photography done by Workman, confirms what we suspected, Friscosa's and cyanofibrillosa are not the same. Workman said this species is quite different from the cyanofib WA. variety. The next step is proving that these are not Ps cyanescens. At that point, they can be called a 'new species'.

Nice to know. But these also are Not the psilocybes that produce the cyclone mycelium. I think we are dealing with a few new species.

Here are some pics from yesterday. Huge score!

hehe friscosa..now Sporeworks is using that name...Just cause somebody mentioned it once here as posssible name and it took off.

Hey Waylit, is those pictured on the Sporewoks micro photo the same ones as your other recent posts?

They look slightly different, but sometimes they get a little wavy like that...We could be talking a couple new species here....posssibly

Collected and photographed by Waylitjim and I did the microscopy on a dried supplied specimen. Sporeworks is calling it Psilocybe sp. with a mention of some of the common nicknames attached to it.

Another different specimen of the cyclone or cali cyanofib was also provided but the material is in poor condition and I wasn't able to find any cheliocystidia which I know must be present (or does it?). I need to see the cheliocystidia to confirm if they are forked or not.

Here are all the features I could find. At least the spores can be measured.

ah ok, fascinating stuff...It would probably help to get a better specimen of the cyclone one. I'm not sure if the cyclone effect is consistent throughout tho.

Maybe some of these frisocsas are cyclonic and others not. Also I think Peter Werner looked at this type >

I'm pretty sure that's the same one as Waylits recent posts in Berkeley and Peter said also not forked cystidia. What's kind of weird is that this type looks exactly like the one Stamets said was cyclonic in that book.

I've seen a couple of different varieties here of this type, but the photo here and Waylit is the most common type

was there a photo associated with the cyclonic type you got at Sporeworks?.. I guess if the cyclonic type is consistently different than this one, better get some photos so if we find it we can get a sample out maybe

what's really sort of odd is that I've seen this type and the one you posted as Cyanofriscosa sometimes in the same patch...sometimes they'll get a little wavy, and a few feet away they'll look more rounded like this

also, comparing the friscosa and the incomplete cyclone, pleurocyctidium looks the same, spore look the same size...basidium looks different..or is that different?

And thanks workman for taking the time out to do that...much appreciated

I agree, I doubt you'll see the cyclone effect on agar with a multispore culture. I bet Stamets was isolating substrains and accidentally found one which produced the cyclonic effect. There's just too many variations with multispore on agar. I'd be really suprised to see all the substrains growing in a consistent pattern.

Here are my finds from Saturday morning. The friscosa pictures are bad and the area was too well secured for me to get closer and snap decent pictures. However they were lots of them underneath the pine needles if you look closely.

Psilocybe cyanescens

Psilocybe (Friscosa)

Gymnopilus luteofolius

Clitocybe nuda (Blewitt)
