"They hate our freedom" isn't entirely wrong.
    #4407858 -

There are a good number of Muslim radicals who find american culture distastful. Scantily clad women, legal porn, gays and lebians free to involve themselves with whoever they like and even discussing gay marriage!

A friend of mine recently told me that when the greeks first went to Persia, long before Islam originated, the persians were shocked at the open nudity of the greeks, and that the women wore very modest clothing, much as they do today. It seems that this is a part of their culture that is older than their religion.

The odd thing is, Bush spends a lot of time with people who hate the exact same freedoms. The Christian right spends a lot of time attacking homosexuality, open sexuality in the media, nudity, and what have you.

The muslim extremists have almost certainly formed a very generalized opinion on the nature of americans. They probably believe that they pretty much all americans are oversexed, and okay with gays, just like there are a bunch of americans who probably think of most muslims as crazy violent religious nuts.

I don't think that most of the people actually commiting the violence think quite like this.

The 9/11 terrorists spent quite a bit of time in the US before carrying out the attacks. The terrorists in London seem to have been born and raised there. Bin Laden said himself in one of his video releases that if they were attacking based on freedoms that they would have attacked the netherlands.

Yeah, Islam can be rather strict - following the Sharia is no easy task... getting into specifics, though, requires a knowledge of Islam that I don't have... one can argue on theological grounds against fundamentalist Muslims but that requires a strong knowledge of Islam...

Well, arguments on theological grounds all require a littany of assumptions. People can always claim that something is metaphor if they don't like it, and use elaborately creative interpretation of the metaphors to make them mean pretty much whatever they want.

So I don't think that claiming one interpretation of a religion is any more correct than another really makes any sense.

Of course any interpretation of a religion that advocates violence or bigotry is something I find quite distasteful.

My point overall in this thread was "yes they hate our freedom, in much the same way the religious right hates our freedom".

As far as I know, Bush is not advocating stoning for wearing scanty clothing or viewing porn or tieing a sweet young thing up (by her leave, of course) and pouring all kinds of gooey stuff that you can then....oops, sorry, got a little caried away there. Nonetheless, that freedom seems to be secure. As long as she's 18+. And begs me. A lot.

It doesn't matter what we tell the public when it comes to threats from terrorists, as long as the course of action following is the correct one. The action is what needs to be debated, not catch-phrases like "freedom". Soggy minds get caught up in observing and crying over what every leader must do to the populous in order to get them to commit to a certain action; he gently manipulates them. It is in their best interest, and in the end they sleep another night and are also appeasing their conscience. They shouldn't have to shoulder a moral burden, it inhibits their ability to follow.

So lets ban gay marriage and abortions and not have any more terror attacks, eh?
