Ngl, I felt similar things when the ex-corrections officer said that prison "wears down everyone on both sides of the bars", only one of you is CHOOSING to be there.

I was just talking to my wife about Belintaf's post, that I really liked it. But it could be taken like someone shaking a depressed person by the collar and saying,"cheer up dammit!". Which doesn't work of course.

But I'm a fucking optimist and haven't suffered like many of my peers, even when the dark shit is thick I feel like I manage to peek out and see light. I know it's not that easy or possible for many.

Bel seems to be an optimist too, maybe I'm wrong. When I was in my 30s 20 years ago I became friends with a dude 10 years my junior who's childhood was absolutely harrowing, the worst shit I've heard firsthand. I tried to make an uplifting comment about life after an evening of him unloading, and he just looked at me and said, "t'es un connard". Pretty much the harshest thing you can say in French, like "fuck you you motherfucking piece of shit". I shut up and let him talk with no comment any time that shit came up again.

I don't think he'd had someone he could talk to at that point. 20 years later we can talk about it, and I call him a connard too.

Something to keep in mind is trauma is a relative thing and trying to rank it against others is a losing game.

The worst thing I've ever faced is probably significantly less than most people but it doesn't make it any less terrible to me. As soon as we start ranking ourselves amongst others we lose all empathy. Thinking that way means that there's only one person in this world who is allowed to claim trauma because they have it the worst

I'll choose to refrain from making a list of people I've lost, because I don't think it would be therapeutic — and measuring suffering against each other doesn't strike me as elegant, at least not in this context.

I won't downplay grief — but grief, though necessary, is naturally a brief period. Everything beyond that — and by that I mean the endless suffering over loss — carries a very strong egocentric component. We suffer for what we imagine we will no longer have. I'm sorry, but that has to be acknowledged. You suffer for yourself — not for the person who died.

So although I've said this here before — I'll say it again. If you truly want to honor the people whose time ended before yours, drag your suffering ass out of bed in the morning and smile. Live — live your fucking life with appetite and enjoy what you have left. Smile at the people who still put up with you, and smile at those who no longer do. Seize life with every last cell of your body. Only then will you honor the life that those who left once had.

I understand the sentiment behind this, particularly the idea that one way we can honor people we've lost is by continuing to live fully.

But the opening, and parts of what follows, don't sit well with me. Saying you won't name the people you've lost because “measuring suffering against each other” isn't elegant seems to assume that people who share their losses are trying to compare them in the first place. Sometimes people talk about who they've lost simply because talking about them is therapeutic. Saying their names, telling their stories, or acknowledging what you've survived isn't necessarily a competition in suffering.

I also don't think grieving and living are mutually exclusive. You can get out of bed. You can laugh, love people, travel, eat ice cream, make strangers smile, and genuinely appreciate being alive while still grieving someone deeply. For some people, those things exist alongside each other for the rest of their lives.

Where I really disagree is with the idea that grief is “naturally a brief period” and that grief beyond that becomes egocentric. Part of grief is mourning what we lost - conversations we won't have, experiences we won't share, the future we imagined with that person. But I don't think recognizing that makes prolonged grief selfish. Love creates attachment, and when someone has occupied a significant place in your life, their absence can continue to matter even after you've learned how to live around it.

I don't think honoring the dead requires us to stop grieving them. Sometimes continuing to carry them with us while still choosing to participate fully in life is how we honor them.

For some people, healing means talking about their loss. For others, it means keeping it private. For some, grief becomes quiet fairly quickly; for others, it changes shape but never entirely leaves. I think there's room for all of that without deciding that someone else's way of grieving is less healthy, less graceful, or more egocentric than our own.

But totally I hear you. Even at your lowest point you should have room to carry a few stones for other people...

Kids who had a bad day in school.  Your bud who got cheated on and got his feelings hurt.., yeah it's not exactly what I would consider real trauma but it still sucks right? Sometimes it's hard to have bandwidth for shit like that but I do always try

I've lost many people in my life, I still grieve those losses every day while maintaining a smile and being "productive", I don't think grief ever fully goes away, nor should it.

Just gotta say as a fellow broken person, I send my love to each and all of you.

I hope we all make it. This hobby means something more, the world wants and needs more healing, we are keeping it honest because science does not want to have a complex non-patentable natural compound with an entourage effect to be used in the actual testing.

Here is one of my favorite feel good dopamine hits.

I appreciated all of the supportive comments. I usually keep my past under wraps, but the ex-prison guard topic caused a momentary unraveling. When today I read some drivel about just smiling and eat ice cream, I almost went into another soliloquy about the effects of sadistic prison guards and grief that lasts decades. But what would be the point?  When I first got out I had a conversation with my stepdad, another one of those eternal optimists. He told me I was choosing to be traumatized, that depression was a choice. I told him that his talk was very uplifting... so uplifting that I thought he should go to a VA hospital, maybe visit a ward of crippled, traumatized, grief stricken soldiers. Maybe he should go give them that little talk...we could even make bets as to whether he would make it out of that exposition alive.
here is a passage I read when I was in prison that meant a lot to me: 'He would present clearly, simply, intelligibly, and assuredly the truth that it is impossible to write clearly, simply, intelligibly, and assuredly. He would take the pose that the reader will share his recognition of the truth that it is impossible for the reader to share his recognition of anything.' That little ditty has stuck with me for years.

I hope my positive post wasn't seen as a detour. I'm glad we have a place to be open with our darkness.

@blakeyface: I appreciate you sharing that.  I think you should read Life After Death (2012): Echols'.

We was wrongly convicted for satanic murders as a teen. I need to actually finish it. It talks about his experience on death row, surviving it and managing after being proved innocent.

No one without an outsider experience ever gets it fully. I think you would appreciate seeing how someone learned to see the light through a literal nightmare.

Yeah.  Ive been trying get the words to explain something about a certain wisdom that cant really be put into words.  Its a feeling that youve been there, and experienced but could never describe.

Something like "the ghost knows what the mind cannot"

Or something.

anyway, i for one would like to hear the sililoquy.  Whats the point?

Well i dont think the mind would get it but the ghost stirrs from such things.

That reminded me of a scene from The Hours, I'm not going to post it and spoil the movie for anyone, but it's a great watch.
