Beefs Punisher Tek. How Beef preps a delinquent sub for second flush: a true mycology confession * 23
    #28719976 -

So, I tested this thread out in the pub before posting it here.  I was adequately hazed and ridiculed there, so I figure it to be time to hang my head and come clean to the cult forum and my fellow TC's.    Even as we speak, i have a yeti sub showing lots of promising pins after only mere days of this technique. I hate a delinquent substrate.  This is the way I clean the slate and make them pay what they owe.  Im  not sure if god even likes me anymore and I know I may face harsh reception for this here by my peers and at the gates of heaven later but here we go.

As overheard in the pub:

BeefSupremeJr said:
Yeah I think I should come clean about my tub punishing antics.  I confess I've been recommending people do this and I should be exposed for it.  Not really ready to make this an official tek, because It may not be well received.  Im ready for the wrath of my colleages.

Ok after any first flush, what Ill do thats pretty standard and accepted, is, with a gloved hand, wipe all the aborts, stumps and whatever other nonsense there is remaining.

Heres a comically stupid first flush:

And here it is, humiliated:

So then what I do when I have a surface that I dont like anymore after a first flush--overlaid, matted, covered in spores etc.  it happens--I take it to the sink, and with luke warm water, i use the dish sprayer to harshly wash the surface off of the sub.  I "paint it brown".  that makes sense if you try it.

punished:

OK I admit I pretty much do this with every tub, despite whatever the surface looked like after the first flush.  I do it because I get really nice results. I think the thing I run into more often than anythint else is over-pinning.  Tooooo many pins makes for a batch or micro-fruits and then youre left with a ton of aborts after harvest.

What wil happen is it will fuzz back over and make a whole new surface in about 4 or 5 days and pin again.  typically, I get much bigger fruit the second flush.

Its harsh, yeah, but I've been secretly running side by sides for the last 6 months and seeing what Ive seen, its a no brainer.  I punish everything the same.  Even semps.

Ok bring it. Be honest.  Say whats on your mind.

Heres an example of a yeti tub that was harshly punished for giving me a ton of micro-fruit on its first flush, as is yetis custom.

I also admit, this is an extenstion of something i learned from our old dear friend baked beings, who told me in hushed tones, that he simply takes his tub to the sink and runs water over the surface.

I saw that dish sprayer watching me do this with its little sea-horse flat-face like "sir, i can help"

so heres that same tub.  all pictures were posted the day I did what did.

edit 1/31/26

Some time last year, i started adding a layer of field cap coir, LOOSELY after punishment. At first I had mixed results, but i've played with it some. I go a little wetter on the prep now than I would a substrate, and i mist it A LOT as it becomes colonized after second flush.

To my delight, I'm now getting some brutal second flushes and now EVEN A THIRD flush on really heavy fruiters like Sporeless GT:

Behold, this is a THIRD flush on a sub that already gave me 200% bioefficiency on the first flush. I'll weigh it all when its done, but we are way way beyond all previous efficiency data for this strain folks.

First flush canopy:

second flush chonkers:

Now third flush:

I put on my Jigsaw mask, take the tub to the sink, and start running water. Then I lean in and say β€œLive or die. Make your choice.”

And wouldn’t you know it, they live.

Honestly when you don’t have fruits to worry about, you can really do quite a lot to a cake and it will generally recover if things were above board at s2b

I'm always interested in how our indoor cultivation methods differ from what happens in "the wild."

From what I've seen, pasture shrooms really come in hard after a pounding early summer thunderstorm. And those patties they're popping out of look gnarly before the storms. Myc almost completely dried out and barely visible at the crusty surface, mold growing in spots, etc.

The problem with indoor cultivation vs the wild is that contamination is vastly stacked in favor against mushroom mycelium indoors.

Of course.

Hence the differences.

But it's interesting to me that much of what seems to make wild mushrooms thrive and outcompete contamination is extreme variation of conditions, like a month of intense drying sunshine followed by big rainstorms.

And yet most of our practices seem to be based on gentle and gradual change.

Beneficial microbes and lots of fresh air.

Indoors we have to eliminate all vectors for contamination anyway that we can because our homes are loaded in vast favor of contamination spores in a mostly still air environment.  Hence all the perpetration of substrate materials and sterile procedures etc.

Sure, yes. Again, of course.

But once we've got a truly axenic culture growing on a neutral substrate like coir, I believe the jury's still out on what would constitute optimal treatment in an indoor environment. Especially once we've seen a flush or two, a little drying, a few aborts hanging around, etc.

After all, I've seen even sketchy subs suddenly kick out robust monster fruits when put outside in the garden, exposed to full sun and rain/sprinklers.

All iI can really say is that Im not one to deviate from convention unless I feel like somethi isnt working well.  Once I find a thing that that works, i typically stick with it, for years in some cases.

I think I got tired of looking at shitty surfaces after first flush and being disappointed with mediocre flushes.  I tend to lose my temper after about 100 disappointments and say "fuck it" just before doing something drastic thats likely been on my mind for some time.  "cant break whats broke" I'll say.  Granted, Ive gotten myself into massive trouble this way with regard to my personal life, but in this one instance, I seem to have found a thing that works and now Ill find myself doing it without even thinking about it.

I also think about mushrooms in the wild.. I imagine Im a patch of psilocybe aztecorum living on a mesa meadow and Ive just been humiliated by a deer who is now writhing and foaming for its sanity.  Im covered in deer saliva, matted down.  But aw, the sky darkens and the rain begins to fall...

anyhow.  Im not claiming scientific proof this is "the way" but Im seeing great results so far. Im ready to change my tune at the drop of a hat and Ill be transparent about it as usual.  if these last two or three tubs that ive punished dont pan out well, Ill be forthcoming about it.  so far though, its lookin good.

NGL, I been doing this for a long time lol. I always pull stumps and spray the sub off in the sink after a flush. After rinsing I'll leave a pretty decent layer of water on the sub maybe 1/4-1/2" to rehydrate. I use liners for most tubs so it holds it all on the surface. Usually gone within the hour.
Just cleaned this off this sub earlier.

I will say. I'm not sure if it actually helps anything, might even delay a second flush slightly. I do it because I like a clean slate, and this is all anecdotal, but it seems to make the second flush less sporadic. Pins tend to show up around the same time so you dont have days worth of growth gap between fruits and can harvest all at once.

I'm always wondering, if one assumes that people are selecting the genetics they prefer and spawning/fruiting in a particular fashion, how much they end up selecting for cultures that behave well in their particular setup. For instance, I'm a push-twist-pull guy. So am I subconsciously selecting for cultures that will pin well after I turn the substrate surface into a lunar landscape? Is the grower that cuts their fruit selecting for cultures that pin well on and around stumps?

On the subject of flush timing and consistency, I'm increasingly of the mind that I don't particularly care. I have multiple tubs of varied age in rotation at any one time, and I just cycle through them all and do what needs to be done. Sometimes I'm actually relieved to have a few that take time to re-pin between flushes. Sometimes I get too many robust second flushes to handle at once, and I find myself grateful for the tubs that just kick out like three giant fruits a week towards the end.

What's more immediately relevant to me is the amount of work involved in picking and processing. Extraneous crud, excessive aborts, and funky half-senesced fruit are the real time-killers. I'd gladly deal with an extra week of waiting if it meant I could tidy up and harvest in less than a minute, and not have a bunch of inspection and sorting to do afterwards.

This is what I have been doing for the past couple years.

You want to be a pin your entire life? Off with your head and the stump you left behind. Let that be a lesson to the rest of you.

What about little aborts/pins that don't come off while spraying, do you remove these by hand before/afterwards?

This is great! I was just wondering about how to rehydrate for a second flush. The last few I've done (albeit using outdated TEK) have been lost to the green fuzz of death...gonna give this a try on some Tidal Wave that's about done with its first.

a gloved hand seems to be the perfect texture to wipe it all clean.  not really for sanitary reasons, it just works well.  faht taught me that move.

I was told once in regards to aborts/pins, "you just gotta give your sub some nice scratches like a good boy". Along with spraying her down I pet it like a doggo and wash it away. The garbage disposal takes care of the insubordinate aborts.

Alright, will give that a go next time. Some of these seem to be real stubborn when it comes to removing them, didn't seem to get my tub nearly as clean as yours looked after the whole rinsing.
