smelly, have you come across this post by josex yet? at the end he mentions using the method for swabs as well. may be helpful if you haven’t considered it yet

How think do you guys pour your agar? I've been pouring just enough to cover the bottom of the dish... But then again it ain't spendy. Thinking maybe I should pour more so it retains more moisture over the life of the dish.

Is there a little line on the inside of your plates? I usually pour to the line, but idk if my plates having that feature is unique

I have 5 varieties I’m doing this with. One just contamed wicked fast, which is unusual.

So the thing is my success rate with swabs is down to like 25%. I’m still grateful to receive swabs, I seek them out, it’s mostly what I give away.

But man, prints are so easy to work with. Genuinely.

the only time i've tried swabbing so far was a massive failure, but that was definitely on me for winging it lol. got a few cultures that def need to be swabbed to get spores so i'll have to get good eventually. but you really can't beat a nice dark print... it doesn't get any easier than just dragging a scalpel through some spores & wiping them on agar. even with horrible technique you'll get workable myc

I’ve had great success with using my scalpel to remove some spores from the swab after cooling in my plate just take the tip and run it thru the very edge of the swab then wipe/cut thru my agar dish.

I threw some old agar in an open box just to see what would happen, and several of these appeared on the hood mycelium spots. What is this? I took progressive pics to give an idea how small it is and where it is on the agar.

So after seeing numerous pics of vented petris and posts like these (1, 2) I decided to give it a go for a few plates, see if anything extraordinary, compared to the other plates, happens. Also wrapped them in parafilm instead of cling.

…those are 14 year old threads breh. You’re just making it easier for contamination with more space and no wrapping.

I get that those are old posts. With the way the growth is seemingly slogging along though I am open to ideas.

Also, those are 6 petris out 15 T1s, the rest of which are cling-wrapped tight, so I can afford to lose them for an experiment.

That's a pin that was consumed by bacteria before it grew very much.

I tried to germ some plates a couple month back and was a total bust, so I'm stoked.

Put about 7 plates like these 11 in the fridge in case everything goes south

I think I might try and prep some jars this weekend and throw some full plates in or wedge them out
