Vented vs. non-vented petri dishes

I know the question regarding which ones to use has been up before. Here are three non-vented dishes (to the left) and three vented dishes (to the right) inoculated at the same time with a cubensis clone.



The non-vented ones stalled half way, but one of them grew as well as the vented ones. I do not know why, maybe some slight slip in the lid. Using one or two layers of cling wrap to seal the dishes did not matter.

Its kinda funny that you bring this up. IME with the same deal Vented vs. Non-Vented Petri Dishes seemed to have worked out the other way round in my favor if my memory serves me correctly, Because now all of my dishes are the Non-Vented type.:shrug: So its all going to be in Personal Preference, as to which dishes you like here.

If you look at just the centers they look pretty much the same but then get cottony outside on the right and stall on the left (except the one close to the middle).

High CO2? High moisture?

You got me stumped. Especially if they're sealed with wrap, shouldn't make a difference if they are vented or not if they are wrapped.

You want vented dishes, and then wrap with parafilm to allow for filtered gas exchange.  With non-vented dishes, you run the risk of stalling due to lack of O2 and high CO2.  With non-vented dishes, you can easily crack an edge to allow for gas exchange and then wrap with parafilm.  Some brands of non-vented dishes will still allow a bit of gas exchange because the lid never fits air tight.

LDPE based plastic wraps such as Glad Cling Wrap is a good substitute for Parafilm.
