petri dishes turning blue in fridge...
    #7125564 -

Hey Gang,

About 6 weeks ago I put my petri dishes in the fridge to stop the growth, as I was not ready for the next step of putting them to grain, etc. Now they have gathered much condensation and parts are turning blue. Are they ruined? Should I just take them out of the fridge and let them heat up again to keep growing?

Yes. Some species of mycelium bruises blue when stressed. It's common for petri dishes in the refrigerator to bruise. The condensation is caused by the temperature in the refrigerator not holding steady. It's a good idea to put the petri dishes into an insulated container, such as a small picnic chest or ice chest, and then put that into the refrigerator. It will slow down the temperature oscillations.

Hey RR,
Good to hear from you. Was that 'yes' to ruined or heat them up to keep growing?

The vid is great BTW. I have used several teks from it. ;-)

As long as the blue is bruising, they're not ruined. They'll recover when you return them to room temperature. Wait until the mycelium begins to grow, and then take a fresh sample from the new growth at the leading edge of the mycelium. Transfer it to a new dish, and then use that dish to inoculate further projects.

Thanks for the comments on the video. I'm glad it's helping with your projects.

blue is probably bacterial contamination, caught whilst in the fridge. what else you got in there, it may be time for a cleanout
