Anybody recommend a particular model of tub/storage container for unmodified tek?

I've tried a bunch from officeworks and bunnings over the years but have never committed to unmodified tek because I don't wanna shell out $50 for a sterilite tub and am not sure what would work locally.

Welcome mate! Advantages in favour of grain jars. Higher nutrition, lower cost, easy observation, the ability to shake for fast colonization, control over moisture content, possibility for further expansion (g2g) jars are reusable as are filters/lids. I'm yet to see a decent yield from an Uncle Ben's grow. If you don't want to buy a pressure cooker the PFTEK/BRF is still the go-to method for beginners

I've had great canopies and yields from Uncle Ben's but much higher contamination rates during the spawn stage, just because the micropore tape is susceptible to flexing/coming loose/getting wet.

Brown rice is plenty nutritious as a grain source, and the bags are 100% sterile on the shelves.

I still prefer regular bags though because I prefer to work in bulk and use cheap wheat grain.

Hey all, jumping in because iv seen activity and im considering spending some $$$ on a pressure cooker and wondered where an aussie might look??

Iv been getting by with my instant pot style machine but my last two rounds have come back almost 10000000% contam and im like... maybe its time to get something that can safely do 15psi.

Im not from aus and I dont live in the city so i dont know what shops sell what apart from my local suppliers that think a pressure cooker is a slow cooker.

So drop shop/brand names and or websites, that would be really helpful thank you muchly and/or just a recommendation of price i should be looking to spend on what kind of literage, aluminium or ssteel (i can see theres advantages to both and iget stuck in a loop)

I hope this message finds you well, i know sometimes people ask questions that are like... just google it!?!? and im just getting a bit lost i figured i could try and ask but also eventually i will find one! (Ps not looking to import a presto from US i want it sooner rather than later)

So far i see HAWKINS have a 14L aluminium, Im wondering if that big enough and if this lid mechanism is guna get annoying how it has a smaller opening?

https://www.kitchenwarehouse.com.au/Hawkins-Big-Boy-Aluminium-Pressure-Cooker-14L?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIkZDc3Jzo7gIVwcqWCh1ekgjNEAQYByABEgII4fD_BwE

Thank you for your patience reading this and any insights welcome

depends what you want to spend I suppose. We don't have a great 2nd hand market for this sort of thing.

If you have $300 you can buy through ozfarmer.com or something similar. Otherwise start chasing the canning/preserving reddits or facebook groups and ask if anyone has something they arent using.

I went presto 21qt and honestly I never want to see my old one ever again. you will need that size I reckon to do things right.

Man you can build tubs out of anything.
I have tried your normal 10lt tub up to 100lt to start then i want to experiment with it.
Pastywhytes mini mono thread is a good one to do

I also playing around with some round plastic containers. 2 pcs, sizing juut depends on how big you want to go, went to Ten Tops (part of the benardi group) and got some neat little containers and some that sit perfectly on top with out the lids on, follow pasty's mini mono tek.

Best thing with these is you dont need a big prep of grain, i have been using these for my grains with no issues. I do my grains up in these little sistema to-go PP5 containers (again, small prep and faster full colonisation for G2G into a bigger one for slightly bigger tubs, but i find the using the dressing one to start and then into a 130-150ml, obviously pending tub size)

These are good for tubs too. Just little germination plastic greenhouse thingies from bunnings.

I love to have a play around with this shit.... Next is a cardboard roll, a nice thick solid one from a foil roll. Gunna do up a woodchip/coir in one and grain/coir in the other and sit them in germination tray, see how they go.
But have a play, fun trying different shit.
Even if something fails, 2 steps forward and one step back is still one step forward.

Anyone have any bulk prints they want to get rid of?
Or if you're printing, I encourage you to go nuts!

Will pay $5 per print! Looking for hundreds of prints (of all genera) and/or 2 other shroomites who are willing to help be a "print station".

Shoot me a msg!

gday my dudes

wanted to ask you guys what you have been using as air exchange solutions for spawn jars

so far ive just  been drilling a hole in jar lids and applying micropore tape each grow but i seem to be getting a few failures each time with contams growing just below the taped air hole on a couple jars each grow.

is there some sort of more permanent and effective air filter solution for drain jars you guys been using that can be saourced easily enough locally?

i see people use those syringe filers for liqhuid culture jars but i read they dont provide enough air exchange for grain jars?

cheers

Synthetic filter discs. You can get standard and wide mouthed discs and they fit perfectly with mason jars. Check the American sellers as well as the local sellers because sometimes the local sellers are quite expensive.

With regards to your liquid culture comment, I never used any gas exchange ports. I'd just use a small amount of liquid and leave a large air pocket in a jar. Once it's colonised then keep it in the fridge to halt any growth until you're ready to use it. You can put colonised grain jars and bags in the fridge if you don't want to use them all at once. They keep for months in the fridge.

Very curious about the earlier posts about the ph of Brunnings coco to be too acidic — has anyone else found this?

I found the Brunnings coir bricks didn't break up as easily as the previous bricks I used which meant that there could be clumps of coir that didn't become moist and pasteurised when using the bucket tek.

My fix was to add 4.5 litres of water per brick instead of 4 quarts (along with the standard 2 quarts of vermiculite). The extra water helps to reduce the chance of dry clumps and given the high heat capacity of water the extra liquid also allows for the temperature to remain higher for longer during the pasteurisation process.

I can 2nd the $2 shop for jars but yeah they definitely get rusty lids pretty quick.

What is your go-to monotub brand/source i noticed reject shop etc usually have a few different sizes?

I forked out for some big, sturdy ones from Bunnings which I turned into shot gun terrariums. The thing I like about the shot gun terrariums is the moisture held by the perlite and the gas exchange. I spawn to bulk using the coir and verm bucket tek and then make trays. The benefit of making trays is that you spread the risk of contamination across multiple trays instead of hoping that all of the grain spawn you used in a monotub doesn't contaminate. In addition, if you don't have enough grain spawn for a monotub then you can use what you've got in a smaller tray.

I had a look around for you for the good All American pressure cookers/canners as well as the All American autoclaves/sterilisers. However, it seems that many places are sold out of certain models because people have been taking up cooking, canning and mushroom growing as their pandemic hobbies.

Aussi Mushroom Supplies has Presto 21 quart pressure cookers that ship from Australia. However, if you have the money then I'd highly recommend an All American device because they will last a life time and don't have rubber seals that need replacing. Email the guy from Aussi Mushroom Supplies to see when he'll have more available.

I have an All American 921 pressure cooker/canner and an All American 75X electric autoclave. Both are great but the electric autoclaves make life a lot easier because they're basically set and forget and you can run them wherever you can run a power cord. They also heat up quicker because they heat from the inside.

However, if the choice was between a small laminar flow hood and spending more on a bigger and better pressure cooker/autoclave then I'd go with the flow hood first. Flowhoods make working a lot easier and your chance of contamination will drop dramatically. They're also great for doing grain to grain transfers so you can turn 1 colonised quart jars into 10 colonised quart jars extremely quickly.

Bunnings brand coir works fine, they sell a fertilised coir though beware!

A friends jar I helped get into growing, some nice GT monsters in there :gethigh:

Just discovered this Aussie thread....great to see.
Yes, so I'm in the middle of my second go at bucket tek and I found something similar with the Bunnings coir. I needed more water than what Bod said in his bucket tek and I also found it didn't break up too easily

Wondering what Aussie cultivators are using for a bucket to pasteurise coir?
I wasn't able to find anything like the one Bod uses in his bucket tek. The one I use isn't insulated which maybe doesn't stay hot for long enough?

I'm mainly asking as I'm trouble shooting my 2 failed attempts at tubs

Both times the Mycylium just didn't want to colinise. Both times I had healthy spawn, good FC, temps acceptable but colinisation stalled resulting in yields not worth mentioning!

I just read above someone mentioned to be careful of fertalised coir from Bunnings. I don't think I bought that but I threw the packaging away long ago but I suppose that's possible.

Any tips for stalled colinisation? I wonder if my bucket is not paseurising correctly. If so, could this result in stalled colinisation?

Awesome thread!

You can invert plain old white table sugar and use it.  It's easy;

2 cups sugar
1 cup water
2 teaspoons lemon juice
put in a saucepan, bring to boil, then reduce heat to low simmer for 30 minutes, stirring regularly.  Add 1/2 cup water at the end to thin it out, I did not and you can see in the pics, it is quite thick.

Bunnings has 20 litre food grade white buckets with lids for $15. They work well.

Oi oi

I have discovered that certain species of fungus (cubes but I'm sure others could also benefit) grow amazingly well outside in Scotts Osmocote 50L Premium Potting Mix that you can get from places like Bunnings. It's the stuff in the orange bag.

I mixed spent substrate (made using Damion5050's Elementary Coir Tek) with the potting mix to use as mushroom compost. I did this in pots and in the ground. Some time later there were flushes of HUGE mushrooms.

I then tried using colonised grainspawn instead of spent substrate from trays just to play around. I mixed some of the grainspawn into the top layer of 30cm pots containing chillies and added some of the fresh potting mix on top. After a short period I got fruiting, including some big, fat ones from just the 30cm pots.

In addition, tropical mushrooms have been growing in cold outside conditions (Mediterranean climate where I currently am) when the aforementioned happened, However, the ones that fruited in the colder conditions were in areas where there was some sunlight which would have heated up the soil in the ground and pots.

Furthermore, I really noticed how mycelium can be used to prevent erosion since it helped keep the soil together in places in my garden where water might dislodge it.

I hope this helps you.

Cheers

Great info migraineur. I’ll try the potting mix with some other ones I have going  that look a little yuck. I have some pan cyans and some ps. Cinctulus on grass seed but they have gone funky looking.  And those stones I mentioned to you. I’ll put the grains in pots after getting the sclerotia out of it

I’ve been kinda slack with my shroom endeavours lately. I have some pf jars going atm but just went with brf/verm.

I do think the charcoal made a nice mix though. The current bag I have has rather large bits of charcoal so the trick is to crush them into smaller bits. I DO NOT recommend using your wife’s food processor/blender/thermomix lol. It scratches the metal bowl and blades.

I might play around with different substrates this grow. Mix some coir/verm and some coir/charcoal and compare them.

Currently I have healthy looking Natalensis , B+ and Aucklandiae jars. I had a few other exotics but they contaminated bad. All MS as I’m working on agar transfers of all of them.

Just started some Pan Cyan CFL and Ps. Semperviva MS jars too so hoping they turn out fine.

I need to get more upload space. I’ll try to post some pics soon but I don’t have enough space atm.

Hey lads, my first post on here. Just had my first PF tek fail. Lost half to contam and the rest did not take, (its been 4 weeks and no action). I used some old spore prints off a mate, (7 years old to be precise), and im hoping this is the reason why. Was wondering if anyone has any prints they can send me? Happy to pay, just want fresh prints without the delay. Flick me a PM if you can help a brother out. Im in WA btw.

Cheers.
