The cheapest silicone on the market will easily withstand pressure cooking cycles. I've run Parfix roof and gutter silicone ($5.44) for years on injection ports+filters at up to 20psi and never had an issue.

Aussie's have always been my favorite but the genetics being traded now are

Cobbers, get your vermiculite and perlite from a hydroponic garden shop because it'll be much much cheaper than joints like Bunnings etc.

Hey mycodog just keep an eye out in big w. They stock the ball brand ones in a few sizes. That’s where I grabbed mine from. Or look online

$2 dollar stores/asian cheap shops are good places to source jars as well.

as in live cultures?

I just got a kilo of wild specimens out of a paddock I can do dirty sporeprints? Maybe a clone but chances are they are very dirty.

There are some eBay sellers that have them as well. I buy the wide mouth ones and use synthetic filter discs with them.

I have bought so many jars because they're useful in the kitchen and pantry for storage. The white plastic lids that you can find on eBay and Amazon are worthwhile buying because the metal lids and bands have a habit of rusting.

Big W has some big, cheap pots that you can use to soak and boil grain with.

Asian shops are good for finding agar, corn syrup (for liquid cultures), take away containers (for makeshift petri dishes) and sometimes varuios grains (for spawn). Normally I just go to a pet shop or feed store and buy big bags of wheat grain because it's cheap and easily available. Feed stores tend to have sterile syringes and needles as well.

I can 2nd the $2 shop for jars but yeah they definitely get rusty lids pretty quick.

What is your go-to monotub brand/source i noticed reject shop etc usually have a few different sizes?

Just make sure you can source replacement lids for the cheap shop jars or they may end up costing you more in the long run. Mason lids don't often thread them well and as mentioned the cheap lids rust fast. I made that mistake and wound up throwing out 50 jars when the lids went. You can buy bulk 500ml mason jars for around $2.35 posted at www.aussimasonpreservingjars.com.au. ozfarmer has some good deals too.

gday my dudes

wanted to ask you guys what you have been using as air exchange solutions for spawn jars

so far ive just  been drilling a hole in jar lids and applying micropore tape each grow but i seem to be getting a few failures each time with contams growing just below the taped air hole on a couple jars each grow.

is there some sort of more permanent and effective air filter solution for drain jars you guys been using that can be saourced easily enough locally?

i see people use those syringe filers for liqhuid culture jars but i read they dont provide enough air exchange for grain jars?

I'm doing the same and having no real problems unless I shake.

probably just more layers of tape and you'll be right, how big a hole you making?

In my noob research, I have learned of “ Uncle Ben’s brown rice” Tek.
To me it makes sense, negating the need for sterilisation of jars etc.
There seems to be a lot of discussion re jars and pressure cookers.
Is there something that makes jars preferable over Ben’s?
Cost? Already set up? Better results?

Welcome mate! Advantages in favour of grain jars. Higher nutrition, lower cost, easy observation, the ability to shake for fast colonization, control over moisture content, possibility for further expansion (g2g) jars are reusable as are filters/lids. I'm yet to see a decent yield from an Uncle Ben's grow. If you don't want to buy a pressure cooker the PFTEK/BRF is still the go-to method for beginners

I bounce between Jars and Bags, found some neat little PP5 Plastic jars at Woolies and come in a pack of 4.

these can be pressure cooked and take little to no fucking time to germinate. Once thats done in a couple weeks, it gets emptied into a grain bag and then i put a little vermi/cc mix in the now empty jar and grow from it too (left over bits of grain and myc on the jar)
