Official Aussie Cultivators Thread * 14
    #26056809 - 06/17/19 12:43 AM (4 years, 7 months ago)

Aussie Shroomery Community

G'day cultivators from down under, I saw the NZ cultivators thread and thought, us Aussies don't have an active thread. Blimey!

Shit over here is pretty expensive, America has it good with their cheap bulk items on every corner, Aussies and Kiwis have to order either from America which costs a kidney and a half and takes about a month to show up, or source locally and figure out where is best for particular items, which can take a while. The aims of this thread is to act as a library of information to assist other fellas and gals out there to make life easier.

Where is the best place to source grains, agar, jars, etc. Let me know in the comments and I'll add it!

If you're after the Official Kiwi Thread, click here!

Pressure Cooker
Alright, this is by far going to be the biggest setback. They will be expensive, however as an alternative you may steam cook which will take much longer.

Jars
Cheaper possible options include Big W, Reject Shop, and Choice discount stores.

Big W sells ball mason jars and other products from their range, great way to save on postage.

Tubs
The best options are Officeworks, Big W or Bunnings. Kmart seem to have very little options and are not clear.

Agar
Look on eBay and get the cheapest Malt-Extract agar I can find, usually from Asian countries and takes about 2-3 weeks to arrive however. Decent price and requires zero mixing.

If you're wanting to make your recipe from scratch, you will be able to find Agar-Agar at the majority of International grocery stores and many Asian grocers.

Petri Dishes and Media Bottles
Petri dishes you can also grab maybe 10x 90mm sterile dishes for about $5 delivered, these also take ~3 weeks to arrive from foreign countries.

For media bottles, look for pyrex ones with a GL45 cap, this will not melt in a pressure cook cycle. Look around for a good deal and make sure it has at least a couple positive reviews.

Syringes / 16G Needles
There are a couple sites which sell cheap, also check for your local health centre as they hand them out for free, no questions asked.

Coco Coir
For coco coir, try Bunnings for bricks, preferrably the ones which are for reptile bedding. Check the ingredients as some contain fertilisers.

Nurseries sell vermiculite, and coir listed as coconut fibre and coir/peat bricks for around $5. Many supermarkets sell the coir peat bricks in their gardening sections.

Grains
Rye grain can be found at farmers markets type places and in organic food stores in malls. Price varies from around $3/kg to upwards of $6/kg.

What Americans call rye berries we call rye grains.

When I get more information I'll be posting in here. In the mean time, comment and let me know!

Alcohol
For isopropyl, fuck Bunnings and their 750ml for $25 spray bottle. They have very cheap denatured alcohol (metho) which is $3.70 for 1L or $14 for 4L. Art stores also sell iso quite cheap!

My recommended tek for beginning is shoeboxes, 2 teks I relied on were mushboys and afterwards, ShaperDreamings SFF Shoebox Assembly TEK.

My thought process is that starting out, especially in Aus, everythings not the cheapest, so rather than throwing say 10 hard-earned colonised quart jars of spawn into a monotub with some coir, I prefer making shoeboxes (anywhere from 5L-8L) and using 2 quarts of spawn to 2 quarts of coir.

This way, if a shoebox containing 2 quarts of spawn goes bad, it is easier to discard than having a giant 50L+ monotub contaminate and therefore the entire lot goes to waste. Using bigger tubs does not lead to more mushrooms. The harvest amount is limited to the amount of spawn used in a tub. I do a 1:1 ratio of spawn to substrate as it will always result in the same amount of spawn with quicker colonisation times, the amount you harvest is dependent on the amount of spawn used.

Yes, you will need to maintain more tubs however it shouldn't be much of an issue as you can isolate any contaminated tubs. Once you feel confident with shoeboxes and have very low contamination rates, you may upgrade to monotubs if you feel.

Any other blokes or sheilas out there who've found a great place to grab some could you please comment to help any others down under out, that'd be much appreciated.

Any info I'll be happy to add to this thread to act as a go-to for any newbies since it took me a bit to figure out where to go.

This is a good idea, I'll definitely be keeping an eye on it for when I have the balls to get some spores.

I've noticed BigW sells ball mason jars for a similar-ish price to other places I've seen online, but without having to pay for shipping.

Also Officeworks seem to have a wide variety of tubs and containers that would be useful for SAB's and bulk grows. They're probably an average price, maybe slightly lower, but again not having to pay/wait for shipping is a bonus.

Definitely interested in what others have to say about oats/rye, they seem to be a pain to find.

Fuck yeah, hey mate.

I have plenty of very dark golden teacher prints, if you ever come to it I'd be happy to mail you one free of charge. Anything to increase the evergrowing Aussie Mush Community.

Yeah no shippings definitely a bonus, costs so much. Typically I stick to shoeboxes as they're much smaller, easier to manage and less goes wrong. I'd rather a 6L shoebox go bacterial rather than a 70L monotub anyday.

I forgot about Officeworks, I stick to Bunnings for tubs but fuck me they're expensive, $16 for a 80L tub for a SAB.

Dude, that's super generous of you!
I probably will take you up on that actually. I'll send you a pm in a few days once I've sorted my shit out, if that's alright? You might have just accelerated my plans!

Sounds like Officeworks is similarly priced then. They have a few packs that come out alright though. I think there was 6 10L tubs for 20 bucks, which isn't terrible.. I was looking at a 120L for an SAB, for $19. It looks like its the same price at Bunnings though.

I was thinking the same thing, shoeboxes seem to be the way to go.

In any case I'll update further if I find any better deals around, since I might be needing my supplies sooner than I was expecting.  :hehehe:

Great idea!
I'm still very much on the L's but keen to learn and share what I know.

I've found it damn hard to locate whole grains for a halfway reasonable price so I've been using popcorn because I had about 10kg laying around at work and  I can get a 15kg bag for $30.  I know it's not a great medium but when you're starting out having to buy just about everything is taking it's toll.

Took a while even just to manage to get spores here with many unwilling to ship to Aus.

Got access to tons of coffee grounds so I'm planning to use those mixed with straw as substrate for oysters and using PF Tek for... less bulky varieties.

Isopropyl is the other big cost so thanks for that tip.  I have a mate at work who owns a chemical business on the side so I'll hit him up and if I can get a really good deal I'll let you guys know.

No worries mate! I had my contacts already when I was willing to start, so it was quite easy to get ahold of. The marketplace on here has plenty of giveaways but as always its great to give more than you receive! Unless you're just starting out of course  I myself am very new but want to establish an Aussie community. Let me know via pm and I'll sort something out man.

Oh nice! I've seen a couple people use popcorn kernels before and it looked like it turned out pretty good. Make use with what you have I guess, everyone has access to different materials. Nice though that should turn out good! Keep me updated. Great to hear you had some success already! From my experience its quite easy for spore prints over mail, just syringes you'll likely run into some problems. PF Tek was my staple for starting out, I've done maybe 14 half pint jars, I'm doing my first run of rye grains in quart jars, and I must say, holy crap they colonise fast! Especially when you're used to PF Tek

Yep I was stuffed when it came to finding cheap iso, but hell, 5L for $30 ain't bad, not gonna finish that any time soon. Lucky! Keep us updated.

Yeah I've been wondering about the BRF jars.  I've only just got them nocced about a week ago but not seeing a thing yet.  Is that normal?

With the much larger jars of popcorn they took around a week to be about 60% colonised.  BRF nothing happening.

BRF took me about 2 weeks to see growth, especially if it was via spore syringe. Don't worry too much when it comes to PF Tek cakes, honestly set and forget until you see any growth. Yeah mate stick with popcorn, you'll still be able to shake ~30% and will be much easier to do seeing you can make quart jars instead of half pint, much more volume.

Why buy Mason jars if they're so expensive. It would be cheaper to go buy pasta sauce and dump it out just for the jars.

Also you guys get denatured alcohol way cheaper than isopropyl so why use isopropyl.

I wanted good quality jars, I know I could've went much cheaper but thought I'd only need to buy around this many for what I want to do. I like the seals on the jars and the rings are handy. Each to their own I guess

I'm still learning, and will adjust everything accordingly as I go, didn't know too much about what spirits are most effective but now I do

Also needed the iso to make some dabs, so went hand in hand

Awesome! Will do. I was originally planning on finding some through the Marketplace, but I've still got a month and a bit before I get access. This has given me a burst of excitement about getting started though. Looking forward to watching this thread grow

Popcorn sounds like its probably going to be the cheapest option, aside from doing BRF. How's your experience been with it so far?

Just found a stockist which sells whole oats in 25kg bags for $25! Might be the new go to, will be checking it out within the week and will report back.

First try but it has colonised easily with elm oyster LC.  After about 6 days I was surprised to see it had got to about 60% already so I wasn't sure if I'd missed the window to shake.
Shook anyway and managed to break up most of it except for a big chunk in the centre.

As long as it works ok I'm happy with it because it's cheap and available everywhere.

great thread, as someone growing edibles (lions mane, oyster and button mushrooms) this is very useful to me.

Rye grain can be found at farmers markets type places and in organic food stores in malls. Price varies from around $3 per kg to $5.50 per kg. What Americans call rye berries we call rye grains.

Big W sells ball mason jars and other products from their range. Good way to save on postage.

Nurseries sell vermiculite, and coir listed as coconut fibre and coir/peat bricks for around $5. Many supermarkets sell the coir peat bricks in their gardening sections.

Also, most supermarkets also sell wild bird seed.

Agar can be found in many Asian grocery stores. I have shown checkout staff a picture of a packet on my phone and been directed to it.

Looks good Urban. The 4 Pack of Quart jars links to the regular mouth ones not the wide mouth though, just fyi.

I was wondering if you have any suggestions about getting empty syringes. From what I've read it seems like pharmacies and feed stores are the go to, but I was curious if anyone here had any better options.

For syringes, I actually purchased about a year ago a box of 100 syringes and 16G needles, all sterile. I can't remember where, I can find if you need. It was maybe $50 but hell its a lifetime of spore syringes, every syringe I've made has never contam'd on me (about 10) somehow! Agar seems to be my weak point which always gets blotches after 1-2 days. Need to work on my sterile skills... But definitely high quality syringes.

Look for any large lab/chemist supplier online, it'll need to be shipped but I bit the bullet and arrived within 4 days. Not as sketchy as you think I guess.
