Hey Legends,

I just wanted to share some experiments i have done to find ideal field capacity for things we can get here in Aus. I found the water retention varied greatly in product and its such a pain in the arse to squeeze the water out, so i thought i would share something that worked for me. In this case - it's all from Bunnings.

I know a lot of people use only coir, but i had some time to burn and the shit is cheap. Plus, i have some awesome seedling mix as a result :grin:

Using Bod's bucket TEK The ratio with the below ingredients is 2.5Lt water:650g Coir:2Qt Verm. add a 3/4 cup of gypsum regardless of variation.

The bricks never weigh exactly 650g, so make sure you weigh it and use a ratio calculator online (or do the math yourself if you cbf)

Thanks for this. I have been using coco coir from Pet Barn. I'd prefer to do it in brick form so it's more consistent.

Excited to spawn my Equadorians in a week or two!

Careful with the Brunnings brand of coir. You WILL need to pasteurize it because it has been laced with trichoderma for "soil health". La de fuckin dah.


I was following one of FrankHorrigan's Tek's where it was implied that coco coir does not require pasteurization. Not the case with Aussie coco coir I'm afraid. Lost 4 pint jars of Tulum to it.


I'm using "Pine Grow" Coco peat now. Comes in a 20L bag from Bunnings in the potting soil section out with the plants. Pasteurized at lowest temp in the oven in an oven roast bag and my last jar of Tulum is doing well spawned to it.


Syringes and needles can be got at farm produce places like Norco or any other places that cater for horses or cattle. Get your grain at the same place.


Coles brand kitty litter is 100% vermiculite. Not the pasta, the exploded mineral stuff us myco's like.


Can also vouch for aussiemushroomsupplies. Got a few bit's n bob's from them. I'd also suggest steering clear of the canning jars. They work fine but the filtered grow bags are so much better because they make more efficient use of your pressure cooker space AND there cheaper. You can get clips for them so you don't need a sealing machine thingy (hot butter knife works too) and you can re-use them.


Only thing I can't find these days is Karo. No one seems to stock it anymore. Ebay seems the only option.


Oh and blunt 18g needles. Can't seem to find them anywhere. There really good for taking sterile tissue samples and squirting into the liquid culture jar through the self healing port so you don't have to crack the seal on the lid.

Hey everyone, this is a farkin sweet thread. Only just starting out with growing mushrooms. I've read enough to convince myself that starting with agar was the best path for me. So I made the SAB, spore syringe and the agar plates, generally from BOD's simplified cultivation methods and the let's grow mushrooms! videos.
I went the agar rout 1st because I used to brew all grain beer. When I 1st started out, I wish I had of concentrated on getting my cleanliness, temp control and yeast cultures down pat. Instead I dove right in and made up some farkin horribly tasting piss that no one but me could drink. This seems similar to mushroom cultivation and agar to me.

Time will tell if the mycelium grows on my agar plates and how clean my tek is. I felt pretty proud of finally getting the spores onto the plates. After months and weeks of sourcing, planning and reading, it felt good to actually start seeing some physical progress.

I dont know any better about brunnings brand. I have used it without pasteurization for probably 10 plus various grows, 3 may be triched on me... so i dont know if it was the spawn or brunnings brand.

But definitely in doubt better to use something else.

Same here, didn't know about the trich in it though.
I boil the kettle and put boil water to hydrate and expand though, same with vermiculite if it gets used.

I have even trialled using LC powder in the water that I hydrate with for extra nutrients in the casing layer, and re-casing older tubs with it too just outta c

I think most of my contams come from me over spraying/moistening the casing layer etc.

I'm confused on this one too.  I've been using the brunnings brand coir-peat (the blue pack in Hadrian88's pics). It specifically says that it's bacteria free and suitable for reptile tanks. Is there any chance that you're thinking of another brunnings product ENtiT? SO far I've grown with it without an issue.

So came home from work and seen this. What a wonderful sight.



Picked and weighed them. 21g and 7g.



So hopefully the rest of the tub catches up. These two just grew a lot faster than expected.

I know it's not that much but these are the first shrooms I've grown from spore to fruit.

Anyone got a source for decent, affordable no-pour containers? All I have is crappy dipping sauce ones and a few bigger ones. Plus heaps of leftover curry ones but there too big.

The only ones I see recommended for Australia are those Tupperware ones that  must cost quite a bit since there fairly elaborate.
