Thanks, yeah it's starting to finally throw some ropes, still slow though..

I'd drop a quarter size colony no problem if I was in a hurry, but if you wait you can transfer wedges from a nearly fully colonized plate into 4+ masters. then u won't get boned so hard if one contams. I do anything from dropping the entire plate or as little as a single tic-tac-toe square (1/9 a plate), but my fav is dropping 1/4 of a plate wedge

edit: also, I've found using softer agar for my plates to be awesome for a2g, the grains just shred it up and give me tons of noc points.

How big of a wedge does everyone use when going to grain? I've got some colonies a little bigger than a quarter I want to get onto grain. Just to clarify, I would be doing one colony per quart jar. Does that seem like enough?

If I plan on using something that small I'll make a quart jar filled to like 2-300 or use a half pint jar. Once that's colonized I'll G2G that to my quarts I plan to spawn. That is a beautiful APE plate.

Just looking for a little guidance here. Very new to agar and don't particularly know what I'm looking at. first two I'm pretty certain are contaminated.

Where would be some of the best areas to transfer from the other stuff and do any look clean enough for grain?

All the plates but the first 2 are looking pretty decent. I would not be surprised if you got some meshed-in mold in the second pic.

You can transfer anywhere from the leading edges of the rest of the plates.

Thanks, That was my suspicion. I have had a little bit of a mold issue as of late and it's really been getting to me. I guess it's all part of the learning process.

So here's some pics of an amazonian plate. I really can't tell if that clear growth is bacteria or just translucent myc. Recipe was 10g agar with 500ml of 80% grain water.

This was from a poke transfer taken on 01/10.

8oz pp5 deli round. Half strength MEA.
The genetics are strong.

There are hints of light blue that are hard to pick up for my camera in all of them :frown:

Dont take my word for it, but arent these just knots since your myc colonized the whole plate? As for the blobbyness, perhaps there are bacteria underneath.

I can totally see how you would think that tho. I don't think they're bacterial colonies cant see any from the back.

I'm pretty sure its some weird type of mold but I really don't knw.

Anyone ever try activated charcoal with agar mix just the same way one would use food coloring?

I saw a video where someone was growing some white bacteria on a petri dish, and used activated charcoal to make the agar black. Looked very cool, and would probably make it very easy to see what's going on.

Wouldn't harm mycelium growth or increase contam growth, would it?

Check out this tiny transfer. Its the tiny white spec in the middle of the plate.

Here's what it looks like now.

This is black food coloring btw. I like that you can still see through the plate when you hold it up to light. D3monic uses charcoal sometimes.

What’s nice about the charcoal is the myc doesn’t chow down on it. With the food coloring eventually a the color gets consumed.

Downside to black or green for that matter are the mini heart attacks when you spot a spec of it in your grain jar and think it’s a contam for a min.

I still get those mini heart attacks when the neon blue stains one of my oats lol. I'll spend 2 days staring at it making sure it's not growing. A few nights ago, my wife some kind of coffee face scrub and put it in a quart jar. She put it on the shelf with my grain jars to fuck with me and God damn my heart dropped lol. I'll post a pic of it later.
