Do we all wear a "mask" * 1
    #25939904 -

Little interest about This theme.
About the "personas" we have which in greek means masks.

So we all behave differently according to where we are placed and which people we are hanging out with.
And after some time we get used to those people and we create our behaviours on a basis of What you know about them and they know about US.

Calling it a mask should BE bad attribuition of the word.

What is it really That we call mask? And if we dont have a mask how do we live in society? If its easier to live without a mask why we involuntarily pick it (the mask)

Just some food for thought

I don't wear a mask, you get what you get.

I also choose not to live a part of society.

I don't believe in having to fake it to make it... so I refuse to be a part of it.

Fear?

Fearlessly?

Maybe not easier, just different struggles. It could be suggested that if the majority are wearing masks it must be the easiest thing to do.

On second thought, it seems reasonable that it would be easier to live without fear. So why do so many people choose to wear masks?

Nature or nurture? Either way, we're talking about ignoring a program. If we consider the Buddhist concept of dependent origination then it should take a special effort of will to liberate ones self from the tendency for humans to wear such things.

Fears (masks) perpetuate themselves with fearful reasoning. It does not seem to be simply the feeling, which is a curious thing. Debating a thought in one's head seems to simply perpetuate it and give it weight. Seeing an opposing point of view even if agreeable, and changing one's mind are two different things. Perhaps if we only feel fully what we are feeling we can get closer to the source of such feelings. So if a mask is born of fear, we must be only somewhat afraid as we walk in semi-comfort. If we seek to remove the mask, perhaps we should be as afraid as we would be without a mask and feel naked.

Sometimes when I feel fear fully it seems like exhilaration. Without feeling the depths of fear, can a person feel the heights of love? If taking off a mask necessitated walking through a fire of fear, is it worth doing? Who will risk being burned alive by their feelings? It does not seem like the easiest thing to do. What if to not wear a mask meant ceaselessly walking through fire with no end in sight? What is that fire made of?

Madness? Love?

Edited to correct really bad grammar.

I purposefully isolate from people in every aspect possible.

I find 90% of my interactions with anyone outside of my immediate family to be very frustrating.

Masks are unavoidable it seems if were talking about masks as current personality and mood.
I feel theres a required mask for every occasion. even when alone I seem to default to a certain idea about myself that can be annoying, but nowhere near annoying as my idea of myself when interacting with coworkers.
it almost feels like 1 fluid mask as it totally dictated by the environment.
I recently went to a family reunion and I saw family I hadn't seen in 10 years. its amazing how I can't help but slip into that role of older/younger cousin nephew etc acting a fool

clever,
I totally agree, a mask is not just an appearance, it is also function as well, work even - such as wearing a uniform and being a cop or doctor or nurse doing nurse things.
in fact any expression or action can be a mask through which you interface with the world.

the real you is the one that puts himself into masks

Yea and when actions and roles are included into the definition it can get hard to distinguish the the acting/ masks from the actor/ wearer of the masks, especially if seen as an ongoing occurrence.  it does feel like there is an interface there tho its just a matter of pinpointing it

a small adjustment of view, and masks are revealed as the basic nature of all learned behaviors, each of which is a suitable mask or attitude matching each situation.

This is natural, and so, it only should become a concern when it becomes unnatural.

I seen a guy I hadn't seen for 20 years on a golf course a few months ago and was interested in seeing how he'd changed.  Approaching him, he stood in a legs parted stance, thrust his chest out, donned a semi grimace and before he could fake growl a greeting, I shook my head and walked away.  He hadn't changed the act.

I would sooner put up with 5 minutes of being in the presence of someone who's being more sincere and natural, talking in cutesy talk with their pet puppy.

Falsehood
is what makes everything think they are a cube trying eagerly to fit into a triangular hole.  It is the very source of anxiety and disconnection.

People, by their emotional instincts can often figure what is genuine and what is real.

Everyone has a range of these 'masks'.

There's a considerable difference between automatic adjustment in persona to establish rapport between yourself and another (or others) and a Grundy Television Production...

make no mistake, falsehood is not masks - it is Trump's alternative truths which, in forming a web of fantasy, endangers everything it touches.

I mostly don't wear a mask.

People find it disturbing. Its scares people that other people simply DO as they ARE. They feel they need to keep up appearances not to be ridiculed.

I deeply care for the feelings of others but if thy think I'm a silly twat its fine with me. I can't make you like the awesome person I am. Sorry but, if you dont see it, poor you.

Not a hair better or worse than anyone else on this planet.

To "Know Thyself" is the most challenging aspect of our life.

To truly see (and remove) the masks / false self's we've created since childhood, in an attempt to survive and fit in, really takes work. As has been said, fear plays a big role. Look at how common the people-pleaser mask is! Or the miserable person who pretends to be happy. Or the mask of the bully. Insecurity in some cases - fear of not being accepted by the group. And sometimes we disable ourselves via depression, as a way to hide from ourselves and others, in order to avoid dealing with the difficult problems of the real self. We wear a lot of masks!

Jiddu Krishnamurti discussed masks. He thought that having different roles for different people was what divided us. If we divide ourselves then that echoes out and we divide others...society becomes divided. The goal of uniting society starts within ourselves. Masks create internal conflict that we externalize...and cause others to do the same. If we act as our genuine selves it is the start of the internal revolution. Our acts will project out due to our behavior and it will unify others...the start of ending conflict. In my life now this is how I feel...and I practice this. I am myself for better or worse...like it or not...I am me always.

masks are functional, like words, clothing, machines.

Great post Huehuecoyotl.

One of the most interesting books I've read was "Our Inner Conflicts" by Karen Horney where she outlines how these conflicts create and sustain neurosis, such as aggression, over compliance, and isolation - detachment. Ultimately, I suspect most violence and suicide is created by inner conflicts. Hatred and violence are born in this environment.
