Researching the connection between the unconscious mind and religion, got suggestions?

I've recently realized interaction with the unconscious/subconscious mind is probably a common theme/aspect of many religions. Practices such as fasting, certain meditations, dream work/belief that god speaks to us in dreams, and dancing to the point of trance (seen only in african cultures afaik, but likely more widespread) all have the same goal; to interact with the unconscious mind and learn from this interaction.

I was wanting to read more about this connection, and learn more about how the various religions gain access to the unconscious, and what they do from there. It seems to me that it might be a more important identifier of "genuine religious activity" than belief in a god ,rituals/traditions, or fancy robes/priests. Maybe I'm being a little ignorant here but please, inform me if so.

Can you think of any other methods I haven't listed? Got anything else relevant to say? I'm down for chit chat as long as its semi relevant
