Your patch is going to be very nice! I recently just learned about the dyed woodchips, I had no idea they did that. Have wasted many hours not hunting those spots!

My apartment complex just laid a bunch of alder chips yesterday. I would colonize that stuff too but I don't want them to find my 6'x6' patch under the rhododendron bush where I park. It's hilarious, my landlord just thinks I'm great. I'm the only renter that landscapes his yard and lays woodchips down for weed control

yep, they take to that scotts red mulch. After i have my quarts of oats colonized i soak a bucket of the mulch for a couple days then drain for about 1/2 a day. Then i mix about 1 quart of spawn to about roughly 5-6 quarts of mulch. I put it in a plastic bag and just roll up the top and put on a shelf. a month or so later its ready for a new outside bed of red mulch.
I did this to this little bed last year and after it was done fuiting i put about a inch of red mulch over it and we will see what happens this next season.

hey nothingschanged, thats pretty cool you recall my bay area thread. I'm trying to keep this small patch going and starting another one but a little larger.

Nice tek! Your myc looks very happy, do you worry about it being exposed soo soon in the season though?

Yeah I thought they wouldn't take to the red chips either. I thought they had anti-fungals. Found cyans growing from red mulch 5feet from the gas pumps at a chevron 2 years ago. Wish I would've taken a picture.

Update from my wavy cap experiment.
Alfalfa cubes hydrated with limewater, drained and mixed with topsoil and hardwood pellets has created a nice 4L mycobag of rockhard pure white myc.
Ended up way nicer than my tub, although the tub was 4x bigger and open-air vs filter patch. My nutrient watering idea (earlier page) was a failure for the tub. Gave me trych.
Tub was shavings, pellets mainly with some verm.
Seems Alfalfa is an excellent source of protein and cellulose + nutrients

The lime water, does it strip the vegetation of nutrients or something? I know it's used for pasteurizing teks but haven't tried it myself. Could you just simmer the alfalfa cubes and use that water instead of lime water? I wonder if this would be a safe solution to dunk cubensis cakes in for a bigger 2nd and 3rd flush as well. Either way very interesting.

It's just very high pH. 12-14 depending on solubility curve
Mainly for 'cold pasteurization' and inhibiting growth of some contams. Fairly certain it breaks down some molecules to allow easier digestion for mycelium.
All outdoors now, will see how it matures
Haven't messed around with steeping or prepping the alfalfa any other way. My outdoor I just tossed a bunch dry in the bed. They are heat treated when compressed/dried.
