Exactly what i have found is that mushroom myc outside is pretty vigorous. Contams dont seem to be that big of a deal outdoors. Gotta remember these mushrooms grow in the wild without our help. I believe it is the massive fresh air exchange going on. Air inside is too stagnant. Used to boil the chips and then spawn. Found this is not even needed. Just get them soaked first. Just the other day i printed some azures, left them printing for 2 days. When i picked up the caps i noticed myc. Had started to form where i cut the stem. I threw them in a ziploc of soaked chips. The myc is already taking off. Same thing with pasty plates. Because the myc is fully colonized the agar you are giving it a fighting chance. I succesfully did this with a planter box of azurescens i posted on cult pic of the day.

I see it I think - on the bark it appeared to jump first?! You aren't using some tiny chips either. Nice to know it's that easy. So do you leave the bag top open to get all that nice fresh air?

Yes then poke some holes in the bottom for drainage. Then i use the mister on the hose every few days. You can definitely use grains like liloldme, but woodeaters are made to eat wood. Like a wood chuck.

Great stuff as always. I was wondering, have you noticed any detrimental or positive effects from fertilizer aplications organic or inorganic?

I did fertilize the first bed to pop off with Jobe's organic fertilizers but.. I feel like the casing layer, extra shade, and watering is why it won the race.

What are your plans on feeding it so it doesn't disappear next year? I think Book brings up a good point using wood water when it gets dry.
Have you considered just straight mulching it and adding other species like Agrocybe Praecox or others? The top, most natural layer is going to be most important for next year and years to come. It would be a shame to see this burn out.
Edit: Also, I'd like to see what happens to an area if you add chicken scratch to it. Enhance a few years worth of bird droppings.. I bet some bird feeders out there would be awesome on their own for eating slugs and gnats and flies, caterpillars etc. Especially if you have to lot of robins around.

i was always under the assumption that you could just top patches off with new woodchips, is that not sufficient for having a patch long term?

I have piles of fermenting blackberry stalks I will be chipping and adding to the patches this spring. I am more than happy with beefing up these planting beds a bit and allowing the mycelium to make me some great soil. I used some pretty thick branches under the wood chips so even if I didn't do a thing I feel like they will fruit for several more years.
