Ive never seen a bird eat a slug. and true birds and stuff will distribute your goods but at some point it needs to stop so your spot switches into fruit mode and not repair/colonize. Just my opinion.

Just a thought, if you are having problems with spawn being eaten by animals disturbing your patch, it might be an idea to suspend some starchy nutes (like brf) in water, then hydrate wood chips or straw or pellets with it. Then colonize it in sterile conditions. The nute boost should be great for the mycelium and you could use that as spawn. Animals should not be nearly as interested in it.
Just a thought, this is outta my comfort zone here.

My big bulk sterilite spawn (20L or so) is all wood shavings and pellets with soil and verm. Was concerned about nutrition before moving out to a new bed
So my last hydration was done with sterile grain water and weak coffee. Dissolved 2 zinc tabs. Hasn't gone funky yet, and growth increased. Not sure what to mix when sending outdoors.
Have some cold pasteurized alfalfa. Used that with jiffy mix in a myco bag as a test and it absolutely loved it. Wondering about using that in the bed.
Still too cold here ><

I wouldn't add anything else in regards to nutrients to your spawn. It sounds risky adding that grain water as you're opening yourself up for potential contams, but I could be wrong. I would just let it do its thing and spawn handfuls of the colonized stuff to your favorite planting beds in a month or so.

Definitely felt risky, both those liquids can be trouble.
Although, with the MS started up mid December and extremely low sugar/starch %s, the habitat is only friendly to a few things.
Bulk consolidation tub atm, but I never used grain and was concerned they might be deficient. Not sure where they are synthing proteins from... lol
Alfalfa is a legume and very high in amino acids

Or set out a bunch of hanging bird feeders so they dont have to bother to dig around and look.

Were I'm from. Bird feeders make a huge mess which in return bring huge rats and aggressive squirrel's. Then you have a full blown messy feeding frenzy. Now your area has the attention of every predator and hungry pray in the area. All though cool, the timid, Hunger-yer things will be eating things on the outskirts of the frenzy zone. The frenzy got there attention. The easier meal of your (out of the way WBS and Gain spawn) Got there action.(Eating) Strictly my opinion. Babied patches don't do to well. IMO. Give them some wood to eat, after all they are wood lovers.

I'm up to about 5 gallons of 90/10 colonized WBS/woodchips mixed with 10 yards of woodchips with the addition of several gallons of LC, I should be ok for this fall. I'm learning a lot about rodents. I'm starting to think I should purposely get hundreds of birds and mice/squirrels to spread the love!

Yea i'm thinking your not going to have to worry about Destruction. That size project, The Piped piper could come through with his rats and still not ruin that place.
Coopers and Sharp Shind Hawks (Small) Will come pick off birds at your feeders. Bad ass shit.

Getting the gardening beds ready for spring, spent the majority of my day composting with a new method(to me) called "Drunken composting" that uses: 1 can of beer, 1 can of soda, and 8 ounces of ammonia for the nitrogen source, which can be seen here. From what I'm seeing it only takes 7-9 days to break down into something usable. Kinda experimenting, My compost has a bunch of woodchips mixed in with it, over 30%, going to see how the cyans likes it in couple weeks.

The darker of the two compost piles has only been breaking down for 48 hours and it's already noticeable

I wanted to see how the cyan mycelium is doing where It was spread the thinnest, it seems to have grown about an inch thick which is a good start. I have the stuff about 2-3 inches deep to protect it from drying out, I hope that's not too deep to fruit this fall, I guess I'll have to wait and see.

Watered most of my patches, started covering them to protect them from drying out with this nice weather.

Nice Grow man! I was wondering if you think it would be possible to go from agar to wood shavings with wbs ?? I have azure , cyanenscens , and subaeruginosa prints that have been sitting in my prints collection box for ages now.. lol , and also what species is the easiest / fastest and most heat tolerant? Thanks

Probably the subaeruginosa native to your area but that's just a guess =P

That's pretty much what I did here. spore > Agar > WBS/woodchips 90/10 ratio > woodchip beds. Yeah I'm not sure how hot it gets where you are but these cyans grow all the way down to the SF bay area which gets pretty hot. Dys is right though maybe start with your natives like the subs which grow all over the US then try a few baby patches of the other guys. I have seen seen azurescens grown in Wisconsin outside so I'm sure you could do it with the right micro climate.

Op sorry about the thread jack, im merely trying to figure put the best ways to spread woodlovers. I'm beginging to believe in nature when cyans reproduce naturally i think the spores germinate on the fruit body and and consumes the fruit body. Just a theory and not proven by myself. Then the myc moves on to wood chips. If this is the case like pasty said i believe a starchy nutrient like brf or wheat bran may help the myc take off quicker. Im going to experiment with this, over the summer. My next recipe will be small wood chips, sawsust and wheat bran. Some of the gourmet mushrooms use something like this. Im also going to try adding wood pellets to the mix.

I started with mushroom tissue on agar then to oats and then a couple small totes of some soaked wood chips. Added those to some scotts mulch a couple weeks ago. Keeping a piece of card board on top and will see what we have in november-december.I will have to water it like every two weeks.Maybe once a week when it gets hot.
