The existence of a God...

My mother works for social services and does a lot of work with children. One child she works with has a whole laundry list of problems, aside from being mildly autistic, he is dislexic and has sleeping problems. His favorite television show is Clifford...
Anyways, she related to me how one day the boy confessed that he had many sleepless nights pondering the existence of such a God.

I have to ask. Why does it matter to you whether God exists or not? If He doesn't exist there isn't any reason to talk about it. If He does exist you'll know sooner or later.
At least that's what I heard.

What do you mean, he ponders the existence of "such" a God? That God could create the boy with the problems that he has?
The way I see it, nature abhors an imbalance. Black and white, yin and yang, male and female.
If someone gets a gift, they will receive a detriment with it, as well.
Think of someone who may be beautiful and intelligent...gifted intelligence. That person may also have bipolar, or highly functioning autism, or something. They're not going to have it "all".
Same with this child. He may have a gift, and someone needs to help him find it. Then someone should explain why we get the detriments with the gifts. Then, you work with the detriments, and show off with the gifts.

I don't know Ed. I wouldn't bother saying IN YOUR FACE most of the time to most people. This is because most people are morons, including Christians.
It isn't worth my trouble.

SpecialEd, that's exactly the kind of God Abraham rebelled against. Faith isn't about receiving gifts, just like friendship isn't. Any antropomorphous God will make people believe they have been wronged, which is why I don't attribute human characteristics to God.

I donno Frog, sometimes one person get's a gift and another get's the detriment. You can't possibly believe that "life is completely fair" ? I mean just see the state of the world... there are children starving suffering from diseases while others seem to have it much better. The whole fair/balance thing just seems like a comforting delusion we indulge in...

has anyone heard the joke about the agnostic, insomniac, dislexic man who was prone to spending many sleepless nights pondering the existence of dog?

I DO know, lucid. Well, at least, I pretend to know!
The whole "nature hates an imbalance" thing is not about "this kid gets it great, and therefore that kid gets it bad". It's about containment of the balance in one being, or event, or whatever.
The example I used is apropos. The kid in the initial post has all these learning difficulties. It's not that he gets the detriments because some other kid is such a damned genious. The initial kid probably has some gifts of which he is not yet aware. The detriments, of which he is so far aware, is an offset of those gifts. Someone needs to point out his gifts. I'll bet he has several.

I've been neck-deep in shit that has happened to me several times throughout my life. I've even told God to fuck off a few times when I got emotional in my earlier religious onset. Heck, Karol Wojtyla (the Pope) has probably snarled at his beloved Jesus a few times in his 83 years. However, not once did I ever reconcile my misfortunes with the ill-intented concept that God does not exist.

Oh, You mean morons like Isaac Newton, Johannes Kepler, C.S. Lewis, Blaise Pascal, Robert Boyle, James Prescott Joule, Louis Pasteur, George Washington Carver and others too numerous to mention?
It scares me sometimes to think there are people in the psychedelic community as arrogant and asinine as you.

Catalyst, he said "most", not "all". I agree.

Those are some pretty daunting questions, for sure. But, atheists have just as many difficult questions to answer. Atheism is a self-defeating philosophy, for the atheist posits an absolute negation. The only way you can posit an absolute negation is if you possess infinate knowledge. I am fine with honest agnostics, for the word agnostic simply means "One who does not know".
