Why claim enlightenment? An honest question that deserves an honest answer.

Why can't you live and still question? This is either giving up on the quest of gathering knowledge or it is becoming content with what you have. The second being a better achievement in my opinion.

really is there an enlightenment? Enlightenment is learning and experiencing. The truth is, I don't believe you gain enlightenment, but lose it. So every day you shed your shell, you are more enlightened then before.

But to be honest, enlightenment is that feeling you get when you just woosh feel like you learned something so profound that the whole entire universe just opened up to you.

that is satori or eureka,
but keeping on seeking, and keeping on polishing the mirror, and just keeping on are part of it I am sure. some whoosh from time to time of course, enlightenment is certainly not a thing achieved and put on resume:

enlightened at wat mahatat 1993
re-enlightened at esalen 1994
disenchanted at burning man 2003
sheesh...

instead it is a direction towards which you keep readjusting or simply do not. a personal thing.

An old and proven technique of social engineering, this popular method is envoked by claiming you have attained a powerful yet mythical state of being that apparently cannot be properly understood, observed or explained unless you have achieved said state. Once you have everyone convinced that you indeed have attained this "state of enligntenment", they will generally follow everything you say without question and if you are really good you can even make them for pay the privilege of your 'teachings'.

that is certainly part of guru-dom and remains part of politics to this day with several caveats.

still there is no question in my mind that a path of enlightenment exists, through which awareness is increased, burdens are lightened, and life is enriched.

enlightenment is not the path of piracy, nor is it the path of politics, it is closer to the path of poetry.

Little enlightenment is easy. Big enlightenment will DESTROY YOUR LIFE.

That's hilarious. I've been writing my mystical history chronologically, not to prove anything, just to gain perspective.

Little enlightenments are various states of consciousness. (Samadhi/Jhana/Adeptus Minor)

Big enlightenment is consciousness itself. (Nirvana/Satori/Magister Templi)

no to big and little enlightenments - though the far east is full of those stories - they are stories and dreams useful in context and meaningless outside of teaching situations.

no to enlightenment destroys life. One of the 'spiritual pursuits' in the far east is towards 'cessation'. this is sometimes equated with 'nibbana' or nirvana' in the hinayana. but the mahayana eschews nibbana in favor of the bodhisattva path. i.e. it is more "enlightened" to keep working while any beings still suffer, than to personally achieve cessation.

BTW - I never went to wat mahatat, nor did I go to Esalen, that was a joke, related to the fact that being on the path towards 'enlightenment' is not a resume issue, nor is it a tattoo or diploma from an accredited institution.
