enlightenment, at-one-ment

but you must be "solid" like a rock

you will know once you have hit there because you will be forever changed

the break through aspect of enlightenment is actually satori.
and in many cases, just samadhi.
satori is just encouragement along the way.
the path itself has to keep on awakening.
it does not get to another level such that fallback is not a danger.

samadhi is jhana from devotion or yoga
satori is jhana from zen practice
both make you feel very special indeed, and provide a glimpse of timeless reality, like seeing the wheel of life, annatta, dependent origination, compassion etc.
they are impermanent visionary states paradoxically connected to timelessness which casts things in 'eternal' etc. some think this is the goal, but it is just a tease.

I've heard it explained as "one hand touching the elephant in the dark". Some people think Buddhism is non-theistic... although one could easily argue that they refuse to make leaps about what it is they are connecting with during meditation and enlightened moments. It is indeed like one hand touching an elephant in the dark. How would you know what you are connecting with or if you are connecting with its entirety?

Additionally, HH the Dalai Lama translated a book called the stages of meditation. Historically monks have determined there are many stages to meditation and enlightenment. This book outlines a portion of what may happen in each and suggests what to look for once all stages have been attained. The book is rather easy to understand but is really meant for Geshe or Buddhist Monk PhD's... I believe they would get more out of reading it than a layperson would.
