There will always be people who wish to be the elites - i.e. have power over many other people. If a religion, which started up due to the charisma and teachings of a single person / small group, gathers a lot of followers, then it is relatively simple to hijack this following and assume power over them. Kinda like a cultural / spiritual company takeover.
Human nature I'm afraid. Happens not only to popular religions but also embryonic, idealistic political structures. If my history serves me correctly, Christianity was originally illegal but as it became more popular and thus potentially a revolutionary force, the powers that were at the time decided to legalise it and worm their way into control.

To be honest all these power-centric monotheistic religions are all just as bad as each other, and play to the very worst of human nature.

After reading these posts, I feel that a reference to "Geneology Of Morals" by Nietzsche is in order. By the way, I would definintely call it suggested reading material.
The basic premise of the essay is that morals came about because people started to standardize things that were essential to their everyday life. In Judaeo-Christian morals, masturbation is wrong, for example. The society that spawned these religions began in the middle of the desert, and reproduction was a big deal. An ejaculation wasted was one that could have possibly given offspring, thus it was not conducive to survival. As this idea was repeated, it became institutionalized. After being institutionalized for so long, it became dogmatic. "God doesn't WANT you to jack off because it's WRONG!". Do you see the progression?
Just my two cents on the subject.

My karma ran over your dogma.
