Vertigo While Meditating
    #8091123 -

Hey, how's everyone doing this fine saturday evening?

Every time I meditate, after about ten minutes, or however long it takes to quiet my mind and focus effectively, I get a strong, everwhelming sense of vertigo, it's imposing enough that it very often prevents me from continuing any further and I need to stop or try again.

Is anyone else familiar with this?

Not specifically familiar but I'll wager it is directly related to breathing. For more assistance, please describe the breathing exercises you perform leading into meditation (if you do) and the manner in which you breathe during your sit.

I get it. My entire "essence" begins spinning in a circle. I liken it to going into a blackhole. Eventually I reach the event horizon, and the spinning stops, but so does any contact with physical reality. I experience melting into warmth and a very minor sense of one-ness.

Try to stay with it and see what happens, if you don't feel threatened by it. It really scared me the first time it happened and I fought it for a long time. Then one night, I woke up and it was happening, and I could do nothing to stop it. I decided to be brave and face it, and was extremely glad I did.

That happened to me for the first time about 2 weeks ago. I tried to just go with it but it started making me feel a bit sick so i stopped. Hasn't happened since...

Hmm.. Interesting Jonathanseagull, perhaps when I get an hour or two to experiment with it, I'll try flowing with it.

When starting, I focus my awareness on my muscles and breathing, starting at my toes, I focus all thought on tightening, then relaxing my muscles, working my way up my body to my head. Then I breathe in and out steadily for a few minutes until I'm relaxed enough to direct my mind elsewhere. It's usually about five minutes (I'm estimating, never actually looked at a clock in the middle of it) after I'm done those "warm-ups" that I start to get the headspinning effect.

It's a good thing, it means you're doing something right

This is a common experience if your attempting to astral project. It just means that you're falling into a trance, basically. In a bioenergetic way it means that your awareness is being shifted to your more subtle bodies.

Definitely move through it. Not to scare you, but more to encourage you, there is worse that you can experience. Some people experience the process of conscious exit projection like being run over by a train.

This is exactly how I've noticed it. Not related to subtle bodies or astral traveling, but that I'm quieting down in my mind, and noticing more subtle energy movements in my body. But at some point it does become the whirlwind.

I have experienced that while trying to create a lucid dream before. For me, it was a spiraling sensation, as if there was three dimensions.

I get it too.

Jonathanseagull has the right idea.

Yes, it is a good thing. It means your consciousness is losing its attachment to your body. Their is a momentary sense of disorientation which can be uncomfortable at first.

I also receive massive perceptual distortion as far as my body goes before the swirl comes. My hands feel like they are turned over, and my thumbs are on the opposite sides of my hands. The craziest was once I was lying down meditation, but felt as if I was standing straight up. Another time, as if my body stretched on in a straight line from head to feet for infinity off the foot of my bed. Another time as if my hands were in my face.
